In the year 1512, an expeditionist mapped Antarctica. There was no ice there then. Today, the ice is 1 km thick. That was only a few hundred years ago...not thousands or so.

How was the absence of ice back then explained when nobody burned fossil fuels?

The only map I found of arctic from 1512 was by Gerard Mercator, a belgian who never travelled more than 400km from the place of his birth. Hardly an expeditionist! So, you take his word for it that the arctic was ice-free at the time? North Pole, South Pole....what's the difference? They are poles afterall. I think you take too much issue with irrelevent issues like what their names are. If there was no ice in the antarctic at one time it just goes to reason that there was no ice in the north. So, if we accept that there was no ice in the south several hundred years ago then we should not be neccessarily concerned about the condition of the arctic today. Take a good look at it and think about that you are saying- The clue is that it doesn't show a break in the coast between brazil and what you are calling 'antarctica'- if its such a good map of 16th century southern hemisphere then where has the Amundsen Sea gone?! Because it's not as dense as saltwater, freshwater has greater volume than an equivalent weight of saltwater. When melted into the ocean, it adds a greater volume of melt water than it originally displaced.

You should perhaps do a little study of the Earth. There is no land at the North Pole. It is the Arctic Ocean, and the Arctic ice floats on the ocean, like the ice cubes in your glass of water. The Archimedes Principle shows that floating ice dislaces it's weight of water. When the ice melts, the water level is the same. It is first year physics. Very simple really. Just like what happens when the cubes melt in your glass of water, the water level remains the same.

And even the Greenland Ice cap sits in a bowl shape of land that has been depressed below sea level because of the weight of the ice. The land of Greenland is like a ring of mountains around the bolw full of ice. Oh, and by the way. The whole Arctic Ice Cap can melt and it won't effect the Sea Level. Put some ice cubes in a glass of water and mark a line at the water level. When the floating ice melts the water is at the same level. Greenland?? At even the worst forecasts, it would take the Greenland cap a few thousand years to melt. Same with Antarctica. Technically we are still in an Ice Age because we still have Ice Caps and glaciers. Not out of it yet.

Well, It is not unusual for the Earth to be totally ice free. Our caveman ancestors survived a totally ice-free Eemian Interglacial. Forests north of the Arctic Circle. They also survived the last Ice Age. So did the animals. Roman Warm Period. Medieval Warm Period. Little Ice Age. Etc. Etc. Get a grip buddy. Study some Paleoclimatology and other subjects of past climate. You're aware of what happens around us?? Are you aware of Earth's past climate?? And how quickly it can change sometimes??
