4:15 - I'm sorry, but Navratilova is a bitch. She's always been dismissive of Andre and her comment here isn't even accurate. In terms of athleticism, Pete was never in as good of shape as Andre. Andre regularly punished himself with sprints, weight-training, and practice - and it showed in his physique. Andre was such a great athlete that he competed until he was 36 years old - to say Pete was a better athlete is ridiculous.
@rch9000 I mean no disrespect, and you're right about Navratilova - she has always been overly critical about Andre Agassi; but she is right in this case. Pete Sampras had more natural talent and athleticism than Andre Agassi. That's why he didn't have to work as hard as Agassi. Andre was gifted, had the best return in the history of the game, and did something spectacular by becoming the oldest player to be #1 in the world at 33. And who can forget that phenomenal 2005 Final! I wish he had won!
@Tennisclassics, you know what, you're probably right. Agassi's athleticism was conditional. If he was motivated, he was in shape. If he wasn't motivated, he was in a funk. And I would have to say that Andre didn't have the "spring in his legs" that Sampras did. But my point about Navratilova still stands. I've read and heard enough of her comments about Andre to notice that she is too critical of him. Everyone is untitled to her opinion, but she borders on unprofessional.
@rch9000 I would tend to say that Pete was a better natural athlete. Quicker across the ground, better in the air, faster at the net. Its like a ballet dancer against the boxer. On the track, Sampras would win the track events against Andre but lose the shot putt and discus. In the boxing ring, Andre would win easily. Its horses for courses and in the context of a tennis course (or court) Pete was simply a better athlete.
@rch9000 there is a difference between being a better athlete than being in better shape. I agree that Pete was a better athlete, but there is no doubt andre was in better shape and conditioning. Gil Reyes made sure Andre was in shape. But if you look at what pete could do, serve and volley and the overhead slam dunks its obvious Pete was a better athlete if not in better shape.
@rch9000 labelling someone a bitch is not a good reflection on you, though. Pete was a better natural athlete than Andre, even though Andre was fitter.
