Just watched the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Mrs TeeVee got it wrong! Mr Wonka doesn't play Rachmaninov to open the door into the Chocolate room... he plays this! I know it's pathetic but it was bugging the fuck out of me.
This has been compared to Hammer, Ashley, etc. There are definitely good contemporary artists and music, but classical is a completely different style. Begin classical doesn't guarantee it's great, of course. In any case, no reason why one can't enjoy both.
Mozart, however, is in a completely different class. Let's wait 200 years and see who remembers Hammer, Ashley, et al. As Hammer would say, 'can't touch this!'
Man, I had this song in my head for like a month, and I could not get it out.
I was actually writing some music when I thought it was finally out. Lo and behold, I finish writing it and listen to it played, and theres a bit that copies the melody from the overture.
To quote myself at that moment: "DAMN YOU MOZART!"
Is it true that this piece is known as the 'Eggtimer'? It is the perfect length and I'm sure I heard somewhere that it was. Just wonderful anyway, whatever it's called!
That was in Charlie and the Chocolate factory. It always outrages me when that women hears it, and she's misnames it to Rachmaninoff. It's obviously Mozart!
At Nimitz High, were doing this concert that we call the prism concert, and each instrument has there on solo part and they come in by thereselfs no help. I play clarinet and I get to play the fast parts in it. Its awesome.
We get to play this song this year in our band. we do not have strings so its all woodwinds doing the fast part =D (as a clarinet player, i am excited!!)
@ericdup watch Riccardo muti conducting this, Beethoven's 5th and Nabacco overture then see who is the best conductor in the world im a conductor and i take him as my role model
@ericdup Sadly not true in my dad's case! :D He dances 'like a drunken spider' in his own words - I think it's because he has such long limbs that they get in the way...

Just a personal opinion, I believe this song was performed a bit too fast. Speed should never indicate virtuosity, and just because something is faster doesn't mean it's better. At 1:56, although the skill of the players is incredible, it sounds muddled due to the rate at which it is being played.
Good point, I suppose you prefer the much steadier Böhm rendition.
I personally think the tempo is as I like it but unfortunately the players couldn't take it which is why it finishes much slower than it starts - so in this instance I agree the tempo was too fast but only because of the players.
I still think it's a good performance and I do like the conducting style.
As you brought up that it was the players that couldn't play it as fast... As a conductor, I've been taught to realize the relative strengths and weaknesses of those that I conduct. If the players couldn't handle the speed, then the conductor should slow the rest of the piece down to accommodate for the part that has to be played slower. I've always felt that a steadier performance is better than being able to play some parts really fast.
I agree - as a conductor you can only take it as fast as your players can proficiently manage. I would never take the piece too fast then gradually let the players slow it down because they can't cope - the tempo needs to be consistent; being a Karajan follower however I generally prefer the quicker tempo.I am only a conducting student though and am conducting this (and other excerpts from the same opera) for my exam on Friday which is why I try to be critical of everything I see and hear...
Well, I wish you the best of luck in your exam. You seem to be knowledgeable enough to do well, and the more orchestras you see conducted, the more ideas you get for creating and nurturing your own technique for conducting.
Is this the life you want to pursue? To be honest, even though I love classical music, not many people would listen to it. The only people who listens to it are people who actually play it.
@ariadarabi "Not many people listen to this" Seriously, have you done the math? Add up all the people who have listened to Mozart for over 200 years all over the planet (not to speak of the rest of the classical repertoire), multiple times, multiple recordings, performances, student practices, and so on, and consider that billions more will do so in the future. Tell me how that compares to most contemporary music (not that it's bad - some of it is actually very good).
perhaps its the conductor's ictus. orchestral conducting has the beat set on a different spot I think, rather than at the bottom of the movements...i think
you can be sarcastic. congratulations. anyway, i never argued the definition of concerto, your own misguidance and ignorance led to you assume this. any competent musician will tell you that a reckless soloist can take away from a piece by playing too loudly in the wrong parts. even when they are supposed to be the focus.
yes, because one is required to include a lengthy "here's why" analysis when making an extremely simple observation of a youtube video. i realize now that saying "the trumpet is a little too loud in parts" without further explanation was irresponsible. i'll make sure to be very detailed in all of my posts from now on, lest any additional morons get confused and upset.
I was just making a joke. I think I am aware that this is an Opera Overture and not a concerto... in fact I just saw a performance of the entire Opera at UCLA a week or two ago. It was VERY good. You should have heard them do this overture...
No its not played by an 8th grade band. Look at the bloke just to the left of the conductor. You say he he in the 8th grade????? Get real you dumb yank git!!

This is the best version I have ever heard, the conductor interpreted this piece amazingly.

I listened to the whole piece and enjoyed it tremendously, then afterward was shocked to see it was played by an 8th grade band! Wonderful playing!!!

This wasn't played by an 8th grade band, this is the Rose Chamber Orchestra.

I see that now and couldn't believe it anyway. I had read another comment that must have been a joke or I read it wrong. Thanks Jourell1 for your reply. Sweepbrock?? Hmmm...don't have a lot of thanks for you.

Sorry to be so ignorant, smcamden. Had a bad day at the office and was in a crappy mood. Please accept my apologies.

Is it just me, or does the comment box on this video just seem to be a place to brag about one's own orchestra playing this piece?
No one cares about masked bragging on a youtube comment box.
That said, I really dislike his conducting. His left hand is completely useless and all of his beats fall in the same spot.

What? Seems fine to me, this is a great rendition.
