In over 40 years of brilliant film making the only mistake that Martin Scorsese has made was putting Cameron Diaz in this movie. I mean in a movie directed by probably the greatest director alive, and with 2 of the greatest actors of our time in it, its hard to look bad. But she still managed to do it
Watch the film "The cross and the switch blade" on here youtube, it is a true story of how a country preacher from Pennsylvania tamed some of the toughest gang members in New York during the late 1950s. His most famous convert was Nicky Cruz a brutal 19 year old gang leader who had stabbed many people and been involved in some of the most vicious of gang battles. Nicky Cruz went on to found the Christian charity Teen Challenge which helps youths stuck in drug and gang culture.
@emmidignam well the irish got them back didn't they, I am irish as well and I for one like the film. It shows people how tough and gritty the Irish are and how much they had to go through for future generations to live here. I mean, this movie is about the irish mob, and the irish prevail in the ends, because the irish mob wins!!! :)
oh, and we do know how bill poole died, he was killed by a member of John Morrisey's irish mob :)
@FawxNewbz Americans have forgotten this time period,as not that much is written bout the five points at this time...its a gangstermovie and although it´s not perfect cause of its ending, the cinematography,Schoonmakers brilliant editing, the settings, the decision to show violence for what it is,in true Scorcese style,he doesnt try to be a crowdpleaser...was Goodfellas also just ABOUT violence and gore? This is a great, misunderstood film and Scorsese deserved his Golden Globe for best director.
@FawxNewbz GONY has a storyline.U pretty much missed the point if U feel its ABOUT violence n gore....it has a storyline but it really doesn´t have a plot,The Departed was the first Scorcese film to really have a plot.It says a few things,it effectively makes the line between antagonist n protagonist pretty blurry, there are no good people here, theyre just people. It shows how primitive, brutal n filthy the great city of NY was about 150 years ago,a lost n "forgotten"era never depicted on film.
@jayko271 well that part of NY was, it was a slum, one of the worst in the world, even Charles Dickens who had lived in London and seen the slums there was disgusted with the Five Points.
Might be the best trailer ever made....the intro, the score...ON MY CHALLENGE!! How can that other trailer have 4 times as many views? It´completely misses the point of the story, the first scene is the key to the whole movie....
Brody got an oscar instead of Daniel...insane. Guess that´s because his acting was so extremely, mindblowingly amazing that they put him in the leading actor category.
The butcher might be but I see him as the leads antagonist...or maybe he is a leading...fuck it.
Arrrghh I hope this movie is good. The trailer looks kinda shite, and even cheesy. Which is rare for a leading Dicaprio film. Don't let me down Leo!!! Your my fav
@LightStijn I completly agree with you. I bought this movie dvd yesterday cos I am #1 fan of dicaprio and kate winslet. To be honest I didnt like cameron diaz but after I watching the mask with jim carrey and diaz she was the hottest girl on earth and began to respect and like her much more than before.I dont shit care if ppl say she is ugly. I am glad she did play with dicaprio and winslet one of the movie together. One for this and the holiday. I hope dicaprio&diaz to play romantic comedy! hehe
No offensive it's your opinion against mine, but if you'll remember Jackie Brown does not let violence get in the way, because it is not a original movie, the screenplay was adapted from a novel by Elmore Leonard, called "Rum Punch"
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
awesome film. Di Caprio, Daniel Day Lewis, and Scorsesse directs. Thats what's great abut Martin's films is, he can put violence in it and make it work. But with some directors like Quentin Tarantino they let violence get in the way of there story line
Though I respect your opinion, I'm going to have to disagree. Quentin Tarantino's movies don't really let violence get in the way at all. When I think of Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, etc etc. I'm not thinking of the guns being fired or the swords being swung, I'm thinking about the dialogues between his characters. The way a seemingly pointless conversation can speak volumes about a character or set some footing to help strengthen a future scene. Once again, just my opinions.
@Nik565 dude you realize reservoir dogs and pulp fiction were tarantino's masterpeices before he became to successful. now all we get from him is scenes of uma thurman lopping heads off, with buckets of blood, or watching brad pitt scalp nazis in all the gory detail. APART from the brilliant bar scene in inglorious bastards, he is career has been downhill since he made pulp fiction. he is pretty much like shyamalan, huge sucess=spoiled director=shitty movies not as good as the sucess itself.
why do you think QT lets violence get in the way of the storyline? His stories are all amazing, in my opinion. Also, his movies aren't as violent as they seem upfront... Aside from Kill Bill, most of the killings take place off screen. Scorsese's films are definitely more violent that Tarantino's Watch Jackie Brown and tell me that violence gets in the way of the story line again.
film could have been better. some scenes were pointless. lewis is a gem to watch as usual. if not for the historical aspect..wouldn't have enjoyed it as much.
i hated this film!!!!! yeah it was good but it upset me deeply by the unfairness that the irish were treated with im irish and i got so frustrated no offense to any americans but they were very horrible i mean the butcher killed brendan gleesons character just because he got more votes and because he wouldnt fight bill and the irish immigrated there because they were starving in ireland and they jsut beat the shit out of them ill never watch it again xx
i dont fucking care so why dont you piss off and comment someone else. are you really so pathetic that you need to write silly little comments to pass the day away??
this movie rocks but there are shitty fails like when people get stabbed you see the word between there arm and body or when day lewis throws the cleaver in the irish blokes back you see it just fall on the floor ffs.
This film was, basically,a docudrama.Daniel Day Lewis's charater, the Butcher, was based on Bill Poole.Leader of the Bowery Boys Gang. Many agreed that this is as historically correct a portrayal of Bill Poole as you can get.His attitude towards Catholic Irish immigrants. That he killed the first Irish Sheriff of New York. That he died during the Draft Riots.(It's not known how he died)Not just a great movie, but an excellent look back to those times, and the men and attitudes that shaped the times.
@ultimatesupermario ... You'll need to tell that to Scorcese, then...I saw him in a televised interview, on one of the morning news shows, explaining how he basically did with this movie---what Cameron had done with Titanic---he made up characters to move alongside actual historical people. He said, in the interview, that The Butcher was based mostly on Bill Poole---a Protestant anti-immigrant leader of one of New Yorks many gangs of the time---who took credit for killing the leader of;

@Taranau I agree...this film really represents what it was like to live back in those days. I don't think it's the film that's violent, it's the time period.
