It depends. Do you watch a lot of iTunes movies? If so, then sure it's great. If you buy the physical discs, then it's better to get a Blu Ray player or something.

If you have PS3 or XBOX 360, you can also watch movies through an external drive.

You can then watch it on apple tv.

i got a question regarding with the new apple tv: do you actually need to turn on your laptop/computer for you to be able to stream music/movies that are stored in your laptop/computer to the apple tv? because what i heard is that the new apple tv doesn't carry hard disk within itself anymore; it entirely went off streaming/wireless and you can no longer store items inside the apple tv.

so it seems, for me, that the 1st apple tv's better.

Problem for me with device is the cost. Not only is it a huge upfront cost, but you also Pay Per View and that REALLY sucks because there's a LOT of content you can stream on Netflix and it's unlimited for only $8.99 while on this it costs more to rent two HD movies. Plus this is a proprietary system. You can only watch apple TV on apple TV. I can watch Netflix on my PC my Xbox 360 and NOW my Wii. It may not have everything but it has enough to make canceling cable no big deal.

I read that from the site too, but I was still hoping it could be used for an external hard drive. I don't want to turn on the computer to see my movies. I will just continue using my playstation for netflix and movies I have downloaded and ripped... till the next year to get a HDTV that plays netflix, use USB to watch divx movies and other features. Everything just one TV. For an Apple TV I would have to turn on the apple tv, the tv and the computer... too many things on.

Great review, includes the new update that a lot of the reviews don't show. As for the price point, when I consider my $150 per MONTH Comcast bill the price is not bad. I'm going to get one so I can drop cable. I crunched the numbers and found it would be cheaper to buy all my favorite shows on iTunes, commercial free, and own them forever, than I'm paying for cable (!). I am also really looking forward to using iTunes LP on my big screen which wasn't covered in this review.
