You're absolutely right. Ubuntu sucks. That is why I use Ubuntu to edit music and video. It sucks so much that I have wiped out my Windows partition to make more space for Linux-edited videos. What I really hate about it, is that I no longer have to worry about viruses. And I just HATE I now have responsive programs (which I didn't have under SHIT-windows).. I really hate also that Ubuntu is not bloated. Why can't it be filled with crappy code like Windows?

Have some patience, and if one distro doesn't have the right display driver, find another one! Ubuntu is ONE distribution out of THOUSANDS.

Ubuntu really sucks. I just used it for 1 week. It needs almost 54MB of plugins to play a simple mp4 file. Installing a software is horrible. there is no setup file at all!! We have to type a lot of commands to install a small program. to open a hd partition first you have to mount it. This is ridiculous.
Dude, the problem is the frame buffer device, the issue is fixed in later versions. Dell is their vendors' bitch and yes they make laptops that are insanely hard to write drivers for. Dell, or better yet, Dell's vendors are not very forthcoming about how their hardware works. This is called a PITA for people who write drivers for Linux. I'm sorry the people who you bought a computer from (back in 2007) were not very friendly towards Linux. I wish I could control that, but I cannot.
Unfortunatly driver support for the 845GL chip set in your laptop has fallen into decay, very few people still have this chip, an evne fewer are willing to work on support for it (I don't see any vista drivers bein released for this chip either). Either stick to a version with working drivers for you chip or disable the driver (Toogle for more help on that). Also it's 7.10 not 7.1, the 10 stands for October.
@AJenbo Absolutely correct the issue is the 845GL chipset in this old hardware. The driver for this laptop had a patch committed in Ubuntu 8.04 to fix the issue. I'm thinking that this guy selected 7.10 simply because 7.04 and 7.10 just won't run on this old hardware. He could have waited two more months for 8.04... Shame that Intel hates Linux sometimes. Safe graphics mode would have worked here and he could have applied a patch. Or maybe used Ubuntu 6.10 or 6.06 for this old laptop.
Your sh*tty video card is the reason of the "Start Ubuntu in safe graphics mode" option in the Ubuntu boot up menu. Use it. Or better not, install Window$, it's probably better for you...

@Odenkay What video card do you have? Most ATI cards by now are supported by the free ATI driver, for drivers you should probably be yelling at the hardware manufacture rather then the OS. You should definatly try out the 10.10 beta and file a bug against linux if you are still having this issue there. Google "Ubuntu daily live" to download the latest beta.
You probably burned the cd too fast. You're supposed to burn it as slow as possible, or else files get corrupted. Don't blame Ubuntu just because you fail at burning disks.

Ubuntu can't format partitions as FAT32. It's Windows filesystem. FAT32 has been created by Windows and it cannot be larger than 30GB. Ubuntu uses ext3 or ext4, because it's not stupid OS like Windows.
And for Win Vista..well its the biggest waste of money that you could ever spend on OS, just like Win 95 back in a day. These are 2 the worst OS ever made for computer!
Previous Wins were no match for Linux Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva and specially CentOS.
However i have to give props to Win 7, M$ really put a hard work into it. It jumped over Linux versions a head, but still lacks badly in security to Linux CentOS and RAM consumption to Linux Ubuntu, Fedora.
Win 7 is pretty much Win XP in moded form. +few new features, skins, cores. Work, stability, speed is almost same.

I'd like to like Linux but I installed Ubuntu on an old machine I had and I couldn't get simple stuff to work like getting sound from flash files! @stupidvids0 Not necessarily, I had a little bit of trouble with installing xubuntu on one of my PC's because the video card wasn't properly supported.
There were fuzzy lines all during the installation and the normal running of the operating system.
You know what I did to fix it?
I took the open-source driver for my video card and using assembly I worked on it from my other computer.
Once it was finished, I used modprobe to load the new driver.
2: kernel has to load drivers at first time, the worlds' all computers must run the same live cd, it's like in installation in the ram
3: there are XP live cds even, I would be curious on their speed
4: It seems to be an nvidia card, which is unsupported by this version of X, and because of the licenses, they can't put official nvidia driver in their live cd. ctrl+alt+f2 basically opens a new console, where you can stop x, install driver and configure xorg, and all good
You used a live-CD and you should know that it is a ready installed system that cant handle all systems (specially not notebooks). Use the installer-cd and you will see it does NOT suck!

if you have a wifi card, imho opensuse and debian has a better support, but in case of wifi cards, you should try more distros. Only few wificards are completely or mostly unsupprted by the linux kernel. I don't like ubuntu, it's a very overrated linux distro.

I don't like ubuntu because it formats a partition as FAT32. I can't view any FAT partitions over 30GB on my pc

Ubuntu can't format partitions as FAT32. It's Windows filesystem. FAT32 has been created by Windows and it cannot be larger than 30GB. Ubuntu uses ext3 or ext4, because it's not stupid OS like Windows.

Im user of Win/Linux.
Previous Wins were no match for Linux Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva and specially CentOS.
However i have to give props to Win 7, M$ really put a hard work into it. It jumped over Linux versions a head, but still lacks badly in security to Linux CentOS and RAM consumption to Linux Ubuntu, Fedora.
Win 7 is pretty much Win XP in moded form. +few new features, skins, cores. Work, stability, speed is almost same.

First of all your dell sucks big ones, in fact all dells do, but thats a different subject. Second you can't even pronounce Ubuntu correctly. Third everyone who says Ubuntu sucks, well you all suck. Why pay for Microsucks products when you can have a great OS for free, makes no sense to me. If everyone has that much money to give away than I'll take it. I've been using Ubuntu for almost a year, never once has crashed, got a virus, or anything that comes along with windows. Windows 7 Sucks.

But Ubuntu does suck compared to Windows 7. It's quite simply too time consuming to browse the Wiki every time you want to do something that isn't point and click.
And Grub2 sucks too! How many fucking configs do I really need to configure to arrange the boot menu? I'm keeping it though just because it supports 1080p.

I'd like to like Linux but I installed Ubuntu on an old machine I had and I couldn't get simple stuff to work like getting sound from flash files! I went to the Ubuntu forum to ask for step by step help but the users on that forum acted like Elitist Linux jerks and wouldn't give simple step by step instructions for a first time Linux user so I thought "They can go FUCK themselves" and I gave up! I'd like to like Linux but the friendly newbie support is not there!

I installed Ubuntu 7.1 on that same model for someone else. Some of the hardware may have been slightly different, but your mistake looks like user error. Take responsibility for your own incompetence next time. And if you find a _real_ error, file a bug report instead of posting a Youtube video.

Ubuntu sucks becouse it have no codecs and takes time to make simple stuff like playing music and playing videos. Why that isnt automaticly installed, i dont know. It takes alot more time setting up ubuntu than windows. You need a program to run regular exe programs and it dosnt work on everything its just awful.

@stupidvids0 Not necessarily, I had a little bit of trouble with installing xubuntu on one of my PC's because the video card wasn't properly supported.
There were fuzzy lines all during the installation and the normal running of the operating system.
You know what I did to fix it?
I took the open-source driver for my video card and using assembly I worked on it from my other computer.
Once it was finished, I used modprobe to load the new driver.
Works great now!

1: It's ubuntu 7.10
2: kernel has to load drivers at first time, the worlds' all computers must run the same live cd, it's like in installation in the ram
3: there are XP live cds even, I would be curious on their speed
4: It seems to be an nvidia card, which is unsupported by this version of X, and because of the licenses, they can't put official nvidia driver in their live cd. ctrl+alt+f2 basically opens a new console, where you can stop x, install driver and configure xorg, and all good

You used a live-CD and you should know that it is a ready installed system that cant handle all systems (specially not notebooks). Use the installer-cd and you will see it does NOT suck!

if you have a wifi card, imho opensuse and debian has a better support, but in case of wifi cards, you should try more distros. Only few wificards are completely or mostly unsupprted by the linux kernel. I don't like ubuntu, it's a very overrated linux distro.
