  • Hi, from a fellow musician, piece is too OTT. "It is not what you play, but what you leave out". (Ian Brown) I have played with many top class players. Keep it simple. That is where the audience is, many players can produce, those special notes, that make you go yup. I'm sorry I have never heard one of these in your playing.! Slow it down, & give us Bass that makes your toes curl, by note choice. LAID BACK You are an incredible player

  • This guy knows what he's doing!

  • @lkrauss100 yeah ;)

  • My recovering bassist son and I met Christian personally, when he was headlining at Catalinas in LA a few of years ago. He's a great musician and a true gentleman as well. We remain loyal fans to this living jazz legend. We loved his creation of the piece called "Youstabe!"

  • even mr. meteheny should get confued!

  • Great playing, but I don't particularly like Mr. McBride's tone here.

  • @Martiluk1 Oh. You mean a perfect one? Yeah me neither.

  • I like the bit with the bass solo in this video

  • I had the pleasure of watching Mr. McBride last week, and I stuck around after the show to meet him. He and his current drummer, Ulysses, are authentic, friendly people, and are just as they appear onstage. Thank you sir, for a moment which I will never forget!

  • sick line at 2:06

  • Christian McBride is a genius and giant on the acoustic and electric bass, and he's a great guy. I have him playing bass on my new "Angel Face" CD! He's just amazing!

  • HaHa!! He kills it!!

  • WOW. Thats pretty incredible, especially 1:07.

  • @DaNorthernLight Who the Fuck says bass is an underated instrument !! i dont know anybody that thinks that.

  • whoa O.o

  • Brian blade on the drums there? This is sick!

  • the music was beautiful but is any one else fed up with the whole ''I just jizzed my pants listening to that '' people need to grow up abit

  • @ThePavLow117 It's kinda immature.. but at least this means that younger people are finding this interesting!

  • what an insane solo. never heard the blues played like that :)

  • I just jizzed my pants for the intense awesomeness.

  • Steve Rodby and Paul Wertico's new band - Marbin

  • where do you get those cool shirts?

  • @eliseoborrero In the 80s, I guess

  • 2:56 Blade has the dumbest look on his face, hahaha

  • watching Brian's face is always awesome, such a happy dude!

  • mcbride is always inspiring.

  • my name is Christian McBride lol... Australia.

  • This dude is insane. You can't describe his power on this instrument. He's like a more current, more insane version of Ray Brown.

  • I think christian mc bride is an excellent bassist

  • Bad dude...

  • OMG! This is high knowldge!

  • 5-31-2010. Ain't it great? Christian is 38. Happy Birthday, Christian. Maybe you can come to my area and perform sometime (Newberry Opera House, Newberry, SC). Think about it. And many happy returns.

  • dam i wish i was this good

  • Christian Mcbride is an amazing bass player both on upright and electric. Its always the non playing assholes talking shite saying his solo is crap etc? Maybe they should get their fingers out their asses and see if they can do any better.

  • oh you have no idea how good he is . i saw him live just probably under 2 months ago. he led an all star jam session with many other famous jazz musicians and i had the honour of seeing him play bass and drums live.

  • Thank god for YouTube...Pat, Joshua, and Christian doing their thing!

  • Wow amazing soloing from a pure master craftsman!

  • Amazing

  • man i play this instrument and trust all of you who say this is lame that he sucks etc.... you have no idea what you are talking about it might not have the cool loud sound of a electric bass but trust me this instrument its harder than the electric bass and it takes dedication and discipline to play like him!!my respects, cuz i share his pain of all the blisters and the sore hands he went through to get as good as he is! ALL SAID!

  • Why do people think this suck???

  • @YeahChonas They have no knowledge of jazz bass, plain and simple. I'm pretty sure he got arrested after the show for killing that solo. Amazing chops.

  • @YeahChonas people who dont play instruments and don't listen to jazz tend to have the opinion of:

"this guy sucks, sounds like crap, etc"

i don't love his style but he clearly is very good!

  • @YeahChonas Maybe because they don't like it.

  • @DontTazerMeBro

    You're lame.

  • holy shit that was amazing.

  • wat year ws this?

  • your answer at 3:19

  • @keepdrummin7 1997

  • Blazin

  • My admiration for Christian stems from his association with, and as an integral part of, "The Diana Krall Trio".

That chemistry brought, continues to bring, joy to my heart & soul.

    Thanks.

  • :O Amazing

  • man thts like 12th positionn, i only get to nine:/

  • i wish there was a metal band that used an upright bass, they truly are AMAZING instruments.

  • check out psychobilly

  • tiger army and psychobilly are two off the top of my head, there is also a local band that does it in st louis

  • but this bands are not using double bass exaclty, because, are metal strings they use plastic strings..and the basses dont produse god song, its more image than sound... But its a good band.. you should listen to calavera to.they got a great pshicobilly bass player..

  • Do you think it would be able to cut through in a live situation?

  • So great to see Christian McBride stretch out like that!

  • foda-se

  • Cuz it's frickin awesome

  • That was amazing

  • saw this guy live w/ pat metheny and antonio sanchez. It was one of the best concerts ive ever been at and ever will be at.

  • It's a 3/4 bass.

  • o god!!...is that a 4/4 double bass?...or bigger?

  • redman & mcbride :) awesome.

  • this guy can play O_O xD

  • Simply Awsome

  • Holy crap.

  • daaaang thats fast.

  • these things cost a bomb, don't they?

  • yes sometimes even two bombs

  • oh yes

  • Awesome! :D

  • This is amazing...it looks to me like those strings are really low tension. Does that effect tone or anything in those quarters?

  • His bass is set up to play jazz; where the string height is a little lower than an orchestral player would have their strings. But the rest is just normal double bass. He makes it look easy :D

  • I was asking about tension...related to gauge etc. It's clear he has a low action.

  • well, "gauge" and "action" are guitar words, not really double bass things. strings that are broken in combined with a good player will make even high tension strings look easy to play.

  • "gauge" and "action" are string words. I've heard them used often when talking double bass strings. I agree with what you're saying about broken in strings. I'm not trying to disagree with you or cause any conflict. Lets face it, you're being more reasonable than that idiot a few comments down who reckons he can do better than Chris McBride.

  • Just love it...how good are these guys gonna get..??

  • I just love the drummers expressions! he's lovin every bit of McBride

  • i wonder how come charlie haden wasnt part of the trio since they got along so well. Dont get me wrong this guy is brilliant too!

  • how is it that some bassists can pluck so fast?I've been playing upright bass for almost 5 years and i can't go as fast as that guy was going : / if anyone could give some tips or something that would be nice.

  • you gotta do laods of exercises. it's something i'm working on at the moment. a good one to do is like a paradiddle between two strings, but with the fingers always alternating. make sure you dont always start on second finger though, you should be able to start it on either one

  • Well, it´s not something to be ashamed of if you´re not as fast as him, believe me :-P...

    Do you practice daily?

  • It depends how long you practice. Im no bassist, im a guitarist but i can attempt to give some advice even though youve been playing bass longer than i have been playing guitar. Practice your plucking. Its a simple concept but a lengthy and beneficial one. Practice is always the key im sure you know that already. But knowing and doing are two different things. Practice your picking only for a few hours a day and try to make it a real exercise.

  • im a professional bass player and i advise that you buy a bass thats just comfterable (i don't care if its spelled wrong) to you even if it looks like a piece of crap get a bass that's comfterable and you are able to make a good song on it that my 2 cents

  • Hello, bass players. i have been searching the internet for a cheap and decent upright bass. i came across one called the Florea Midnight Bass Outfit(3/4 size black). if anyone could give me some feedback on it, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks.

  • I would advise you to not but an upright on the internet. Try to find a bass shop that you can drive to. The only way you can really tell if you like a bass is to play it. And if you don't like the one you buy online......you're screwed.

  • hmm, damn, your right. the only thing is that ima have trouble trying to find a place that sells em. i really dont know of any places to go....

  • Ask around a little bit, try to get in contact with some local jazzcats, they should be willing to give some good hints & tips to an enthousiastic kid... Probably you can find ´em at a jamsession :P

Anyway, I also would not advise you to buy a bass on the net... What is your budget anyway if I may ask?

About the video, Christian is tha man... it´s great how he plays those fast licks while still maintaining a real fat but defined tone. I wonder if he´s teaching somewhere :P...

  • @theredfighter i bought my lemur music online and loved it, the guy calls you and asks what strings and everything, i guess thats the exception

  • @theredfighter I totally agree. Im from Winnipeg and I had to go to Chicago to try out basses and I found one that was so amazing.

  • The best part about this is that you can tell Christian destroys Pat's entire long @ss solo that came before this within the first 20 seconds when he's seemingly at his most abstract- best bassist, I'm sorry

  • Christian is just a jazz God!!!

  • What groove.

  • I saw this man play last night, with Brian Blade and others... the way they lock into a groove together was the highlight of my night!

  • i got blisters on me fingers!

  • If this is how you've been taught, you need to find a new teacher.

  • If you like Christian McBride you will like a guy from New Orleans that sounds like Brad Mehldau meets Keith Jarrett Trio meets Ray Brown. It's called True Stories and you can get it on iTunes. You can also look it up under Jesse Boyd Trio.

  • whoever said that cant here the chordsand Mcbride solo I want to say ur deaf Listen

  • the drummer sorta reminds me of erkel.

  • Meh...I prefer Mcbride on his album "Gettin' To It" or with the Benny Green Trio in "Testifyin'"

This is just too boundary-free for my tastes. I can't hear the chords in his solo, he's just kind of jamming, Ornette Coleman style.

  • uh, you do actually...

  • no you can chord a bass. i do it all the time

  • give me two good reasons why you cant play a chord on a bass

  • Chords are central to playing jazz bass. You hear double and triple stops... these are chords. You also use the arpeggio (chord spelling) as a guide. Listen to what McBride is playing... his is playing in and out of the changes using scales, modes and chords like the master he is. :-D

Thanks to whomever posted this. It is appreciated.

  • skinnyzilla, you can play chords on a bass just like you play chords on a guitar. It's not difficult, and it's a technique used by all sorts of bass players, myself included. One is not limited to arpeggiating.

  • Jazz and metal bass players use chords. Where did you hear this?

  • @Toshfunk i can give you a half reason; the strings go round a curve on the fingerboard so its hard, but not impossible, also the tuning, it is in 4ths unlike a guitar

  • a guitar is tuned in 4ths....

  • @AndrewCollingwood nope 5ths apart from one string ...i think

  • the strings are tuned e a d g b e so 4th's and then a major 3rd then another 4th

  • skinnyzilla, it is possible to play chords on a bass, because if you play more than 3 strings at the same time you have a chord. it is more difficult on the double bass, but on bass guitar its as easy as doing it on regular guitar. try watching some Victor Wooten videos, he plays alot of chords, and other crazy techniques

  • @MacAddict107

This IS an Ornette Coleman song.

  • I think those chops are illegal in certain states

  • That's funny! True, though!

  • is that pat matheney?

  • Thats some wicked plucking

  • that drummer is one happy dude. I love it

  • i'd be happy if i was as good as brian blade.

  • haha, I think the shirt's alright... but the solo is great.

  • Great solo, pity about the shirt.

  • any bass player knows that it is extremely difficult to do a solo on it.

it is very difficult to play it properly in general, the structure, note acsessibility and time keeping.

  • if your a bass player you can do a solo without much problem, playing like Christian McBride would be the hard part...and plus if your black you just own the bass..

  • That was a fairly racist statement.

  • I hope that guy was joking!

  • ya but a nice one. it was a positive sterotype. if i was black i wouldn't have been offended. i would have thought it was a compliment.

  • WHAT????????

  • Christian McBride is a real cat .. I spoke to him after a Pat Metheny Trio Concert .. He is as humble as they come

  • Christian will always and forever remain one of my biggest influences on the upright. His technique and overall strength as a musician continues to amaze and inspire:)

  • i could tell that was pat by the hair and guitar.

  • Wow Christian McBride wears my first and last name well. Haha no seriously though i have the same first and last name as the guy.

  • hey i just played with him a couple days ago at wayne state. WOOHOO

  • Nastyy

  • Saw him yesterday in Gent, Belgium, with the Pat Metheny Trio. An amazing player.

  • haha I think christian mcbride is a bit better than alright man

  • its a totally different style of playing, even thought they are both jazz its a different style. thats like comparing big band to bebop they are both good for different reasons. your probably a jazz snob anyways so there is no dealing with you. but hey milt hinton couple school charlie haden. but does that even matter. different people with different reason why they are both masters at bass

  • oh and i guess your the authority on bass? lets see some of your amazing playing techniques.

  • Christian is the most fluent Jazz bass soloist I have ever heard. He should be remembered forever

  • Sorry, but that's the most RIDICULOUS assessment of Christian's playing I've ever heard! If you'd said Ron Carter, Buster Williams or even Dave Holland, I might not be so harsh. But Charlie Haden????? You gotta be kidding me!! That man hasn't swung since he played with Ornette! Christian's a direct protege of the great Ray Brown. When Ray Brown wanted a second bass player, he called Christian, not Charlie Haden! When all the old bebop guys wanted a young guy who could swing, they call Christian.

  • Just joking I was making fun of the guy that said Charlie Haden is better than Christian McBride

  • So sorry, buddy. I didn't realize that you weren't the original guy! Let's go raid some more "bass experts"!

  • Charlie Haden is better than Christian McBrid.

  • When your joking it's a good idea to put a ;-) next to it because it wasn't obvious you were joking.

  • Secondly, if you're talking about technique, if you know anything about playing the bass, any bass player - novice or expert - will tell you that Charlie has some of the most unusual (i.e. wrong) technique any bass player has ever used! He grips the neck as if he's choking a chicken!

  • Christian McBride is the best *&6%$ng Bass Player I have ever heard. I was just kiding. He wows me more than any bassist today period. All these people who talk about other bass players don't make any sense to me if they don't put him at the top of the list.

  • Way better at WHAT??? LOL!!

  • I agree with you about Marcus Miller. I don't understand all the negatives. It isn't like you were disparaging McBride in any way.

  • why so many negatives??

  • Inspiring.

  • Man... now I feel like an idiot.

  • It makes you want to keep playing or quit...He's awsome

  • Inprov at its best (I think)

  • bad ass bass playing!

  • christian mcbride is amazing! what year is this

  • 1997. I have the whole concert on video.

  • i can go to town on that!

  • hot damn! thats a cool solo

  • Sounds like he just changed his strings the day of the gig. The G-string gives it away, cause it has that new tinny sound. I remember when CM hit the scene back in about 1991. I was a DJ at a jazz radio station, and he was on so many of the new jazz albums coming out at the time. I haven't really been into him, cause I was more into the NHOP, Lafaro, Marc Johnson-type of bass playing.

  • Ur so ignorant. Just appreciate a hard working musician when u see one

  • by the way that comment is for Stormwriter's dumbass
