Hi, from a fellow musician, piece is too OTT. "It is not what you play, but what you leave out". (Ian Brown) I have played with many top class players. Keep it simple. That is where the audience is, many players can produce, those special notes, that make you go yup. I'm sorry I have never heard one of these in your playing.! Slow it down, & give us Bass that makes your toes curl, by note choice. LAID BACK You are an incredible player
My recovering bassist son and I met Christian personally, when he was headlining at Catalinas in LA a few of years ago. He's a great musician and a true gentleman as well. We remain loyal fans to this living jazz legend. We loved his creation of the piece called "Youstabe!"
I had the pleasure of watching Mr. McBride last week, and I stuck around after the show to meet him. He and his current drummer, Ulysses, are authentic, friendly people, and are just as they appear onstage. Thank you sir, for a moment which I will never forget!
Christian McBride is a genius and giant on the acoustic and electric bass, and he's a great guy. I have him playing bass on my new "Angel Face" CD! He's just amazing!
If you guys like the upright bass check out jazz musician Esperanza Spalding. She talks about her new album, Chamber Music Society in this video, Youtube.com/watch?v=uk-oJGAXSjA

Christian Mcbride is an amazing bass player both on upright and electric. Its always the non playing assholes talking shite saying his solo is crap etc? Maybe they should get their fingers out their asses and see if they can do any better.
oh you have no idea how good he is . i saw him live just probably under 2 months ago. he led an all star jam session with many other famous jazz musicians and i had the honour of seeing him play bass and drums live.
man i play this instrument and trust all of you who say this is lame that he sucks etc.... you have no idea what you are talking about it might not have the cool loud sound of a electric bass but trust me this instrument its harder than the electric bass and it takes dedication and discipline to play like him!!my respects, cuz i share his pain of all the blisters and the sore hands he went through to get as good as he is! ALL SAID!
@YeahChonas They have no knowledge of jazz bass, plain and simple. I'm pretty sure he got arrested after the show for killing that solo. Amazing chops.
but this bands are not using double bass exaclty, because, are metal strings they use plastic strings..and the basses dont produse god song, its more image than sound... But its a good band.. you should listen to calavera to.they got a great pshicobilly bass player..

you gotta do laods of exercises. it's something i'm working on at the moment. a good one to do is like a paradiddle between two strings, but with the fingers always alternating. make sure you dont always start on second finger though, you should be able to start it on either one
It depends how long you practice. Im no bassist, im a guitarist but i can attempt to give some advice even though youve been playing bass longer than i have been playing guitar. Practice your plucking. Its a simple concept but a lengthy and beneficial one. Practice is always the key im sure you know that already. But knowing and doing are two different things. Practice your picking only for a few hours a day and try to make it a real exercise.

Hello, bass players. i have been searching the internet for a cheap and decent upright bass. i came across one called the Florea Midnight Bass Outfit(3/4 size black). if anyone could give me some feedback on it, i would greatly appreciate it. thanks.
I would advise you to not but an upright on the internet. Try to find a bass shop that you can drive to. The only way you can really tell if you like a bass is to play it. And if you don't like the one you buy online......you're screwed.
Ask around a little bit, try to get in contact with some local jazzcats, they should be willing to give some good hints & tips to an enthousiastic kid... Probably you can find ´em at a jamsession :P
Anyway, I also would not advise you to buy a bass on the net... What is your budget anyway if I may ask?
About the video, Christian is tha man... it´s great how he plays those fast licks while still maintaining a real fat but defined tone. I wonder if he´s teaching somewhere :P...
The best part about this is that you can tell Christian destroys Pat's entire long @ss solo that came before this within the first 20 seconds when he's seemingly at his most abstract- best bassist, I'm sorry

skinnyzilla, you can play chords on a bass just like you play chords on a guitar. It's not difficult, and it's a technique used by all sorts of bass players, myself included. One is not limited to arpeggiating.
@Toshfunk i can give you a half reason; the strings go round a curve on the fingerboard so its hard, but not impossible, also the tuning, it is in 4ths unlike a guitar

You guys know Christian McBride is just not as good as Charlie Haden. He needs to go back to Jazz and study the Jazz language more. He should play with a touch more swing and soul as well as work on his average technique overall. I think in the heirarchy of good bass players Charlie is like 6 and Christian is like 24. I agree Charlie Haden would wipe the floor clean with Christian McBride when it comes to good Jazz bass Playing.
its a totally different style of playing, even thought they are both jazz its a different style. thats like comparing big band to bebop they are both good for different reasons. your probably a jazz snob anyways so there is no dealing with you. but hey milt hinton couple school charlie haden. but does that even matter. different people with different reason why they are both masters at bass
Sorry, but that's the most RIDICULOUS assessment of Christian's playing I've ever heard! If you'd said Ron Carter, Buster Williams or even Dave Holland, I might not be so harsh. But Charlie Haden????? You gotta be kidding me!! That man hasn't swung since he played with Ornette! Christian's a direct protege of the great Ray Brown. When Ray Brown wanted a second bass player, he called Christian, not Charlie Haden! When all the old bebop guys wanted a young guy who could swing, they call Christian.
Secondly, if you're talking about technique, if you know anything about playing the bass, any bass player - novice or expert - will tell you that Charlie has some of the most unusual (i.e. wrong) technique any bass player has ever used! He grips the neck as if he's choking a chicken!
Christian McBride is the best *&6%$ng Bass Player I have ever heard. I was just kiding. He wows me more than any bassist today period. All these people who talk about other bass players don't make any sense to me if they don't put him at the top of the list.
Sounds like he just changed his strings the day of the gig. The G-string gives it away, cause it has that new tinny sound. I remember when CM hit the scene back in about 1991. I was a DJ at a jazz radio station, and he was on so many of the new jazz albums coming out at the time. I haven't really been into him, cause I was more into the NHOP, Lafaro, Marc Johnson-type of bass playing.

He should play with a touch more swing and soul as well as work on his average technique overall. I think in the heirarchy of good bass players Charlie is like 6 and Christian is like 24. I agree Charlie Haden would wipe the floor clean with Christian McBride when it comes to good Jazz bass Playing.

its a totally different style of playing, even thought they are both jazz its a different style. thats like comparing big band to bebop they are both good for different reasons. your probably a jazz snob anyways so there is no dealing with you. but hey milt hinton couple school charlie haden. but does that even matter. different people with different reason why they are both masters at bass

oh and i guess your the authority on bass? lets see some of your amazing playing techniques.

Christian is the most fluent Jazz bass soloist I have ever heard. He should be remembered forever

Just joking I was making fun of the guy that said Charlie Haden is better than Christian McBride

When your joking it's a good idea to put a ;-) next to it because it wasn't obvious you were joking.

I agree with you about Marcus Miller. I don't understand all the negatives. It isn't like you were disparaging McBride in any way.
