I did have a question though. How do you solve the problem of the wool getting fluffy? I can poke the wool as much as I want but I'll still have threads sticking out. Makes me want to kill it and shout BE SMOOTH. Any ideas on this? xP
@mischa11051981 You need barbed felting needles - the barbs catch the wool and tangle it into felt - I explain how it works on my website - seem my profile for the link
love your video...you have such a nice personality and you explain so well...thank you for posting this ....awesome..I will look for more of your creations...
It can be really hard to find wool roving at the local craft stores no one around me sold any...I ended up buying my roving from American Felt and Craft online, I am not sure what kind it is but it needle felted really nicely.
Fantastic video! I have a whole box of different colored merino wool and all I ever made was a round pin cushion a few years ago. I am going to get the box out and try your techniques! Thanks for your video.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what is the technical name of the felt you used in the video? If I were to go to a crafts store to buy one, what should I ask for? What is the name of the needled you used? Thanks in advance =D
Not stupid at all!! I am using Norwegian C1 Felting Batts. You won't likely find it in your craft stores. You may find Merino or Corriedale Roving - But I explain different types of wool and needles on my website - see my profile - I can't seem to post a link here.
I love needle felting too but you are so much more talented than me, I just do little animals and such. I will later take on the big task at felting people. Awesome and creative work! Thanks too for the tip too about keeping the torso a soft core, makes a lot sense to me now :-D
You are welcome - I love sharing my love of needle felting! There are a couple of reasons not to felt the torso firm - It makes it easier to attach the limbs and it makes sculpting the final shape after the limbs are on much easier. And - it takes much less poking!
thanks for the video! I wanted to start this project like this and I made the torso for my project which is a brown dog. The thing is though, I do't really know wool, but my wool came in strips it isn't really fluffy and full like your wool. If you can, how can I make my wool look like yours? Also, how would I connect piece to piece? Please answer my questions, it would help me a bunch!
hi! i am 11 years old and i really thought needle felting was cool, and i wanted to star. i have the right wool but where do you get the needle? and what kind (if there is a kind) should i use? i want to make like maybe goats or dogs. please respond! Thanks!
You need a felting needle, you can buy them from a few places online and they come in different sizes. They have little sharp burrs as the end of the needle to pull the wool around, if you do an online search different companies will be able to advise you what size needle you need. Hope that helped!
i would never teach it like that!...it loooked as tho ur needle was on a slant the whole time.Beginners will break their needles constantly if they do it like that, especially if they dont know how it works!.I always push the peice down onto foam/at least slightly and then push the needle directly in(not on a slant). This makes all my creatures pretty solid.
I avoid poking in straight because I do not want my sculptures to be solid - I am teaching soft sculpting techniqes. I teach this technique both in my online classes and in person- it seems to work out well. Very few broken needles! But that's the thing with needle felting - no rules. So whatever works for you is awesome!!
lovely work. i have this old needle felter i got at a garage sale for a quarter, its dying to get some use. ill have to buy some roving now! another addiction i supose.:) i plan on watching these over and over. thanks for being so clear. its all that adorable koala bears fault, ill not be at that level ever, but i can do teddy bears right? lol
How wonderful that you did this video! I've been wanting to try this wonderful craft and really wasn't sure where to start and you made it seem so possible for me...Thank you!
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it helpful! I'm just doing my part to spread the love of needle felting. I hope you jump in and try it out.

hi!! i loved your video!! it was very helpful. well im really want to start needling becuz i love arts and crafts. i want to make a needle felted dog. like a yorkie or maltese. i get how to make the bare body but usually those dogs have long hair and i was wondering how you attach it the hair on to the body!! thanks so much for posting this vid and whenever you get the chance can you help me out??
I have never made a dog but if I did; I would use a long fibered wool like Merino or even silk fiber for a yorkie in top form (roving with the fibers combed into one direction) Tear small tufts and lay on body attach ends only by lightly needling to the body with a fine felting needle. Start at the lowest part of the body and work your way up in layers. Once it's all attached, gently comb the wool and trim it to length with scissors. Describing how is very difficult without pictures or videos
How WONDERFUL!!! Since I am allergic to wool, I have discovered that Alpaca can be used in place of the wool! Thanks for sharing this inspiring video - I'm off to buy supplies and give this a try! DB in CA
