It felt pain for a little while, but it died probably in the middle of that process, many animals still move after dead for a few minutes. If you see animals in their natural enviorment you will see fish and other creature without limbs or chunks missing still swimming around for the rest of its life. They will be slowly eaten alive by many small fish. That is a much more cruel way to die, and its how most fish do. This fish is actually lucky. Make it into food so its life will not waste ^.^
@Kumigar outside if i eat this they will probably serve nine pieces or lessthankfully your video was here now I can learn how to make it so happy :D !!!
@cresentchen Yes, it is always good to know how to make some so that when there is an opportunities, we can share our blessings :-) this is the main reason I love cooking!

I couldn't prepare it the way you do, kumikosan...ripping off a prawn's shell while it's still alive just isn't my thing /: It truly is a wonderful dish, though! Please prepare the dishes Japanese style, and let us non-Japanese people worry about how exactly we're going to go about attempting to mimic your skill! >///<
@Dear Kumigar, dont worry, about the prawn, your dish looks delicious, and beautiful on the dish. i know that its your way of thinking, as well as respect for other cultures, so dont feel bad,we do not feel offended in any way... you did great, nothing bad ..and hopefully i can try this dish soon, thank you for sharing your recipe....Greetings from Tijuana , Mexico.
Hi Kumigar! Thank you for sharing your video on my profile! Yes! I want to try this! Chinese New Year is coming up soon and it is the year of the dragon! It would fit so well... In Taiwan, we eat prawns like that too.
Those who do not understand that preparing live seafood is okay are usually those who are too young or inexperienced... If anybody were to walk into a seafood restaurant and order a lobster tail, chances are that they take live lobster from a public display tank and boil them alive. Unless you like frozen food, fresh is the way to go. Ethics plays a part in Japanese cooking, though. I've seen Japanese cooks apologize during kitchen prep for taking the life of a (dead) fish before gutting them.
I have to say I was very surprised at the way you prepared the prawns. Not because it was alive, but because the only ways I've seen that type of creature prepared usually involved a slit across the back of the head first. I would imagine preparing it this way keeps the flesh fresher. Thank you so much for sharing this difference, and how you made this lovely dish. Don't feel bad though, people really should have realized that a chef quality recipe would call for a live animal to work with.
your dragon sushi looks very delicious and beautiful, but I couldn't have enjoyed it knowing that the prawns. I still wonder if there was a way to kill it quickly. Maybe without chopping the head of. I also noticed that you removed the heads of some of your prawns after cooking, and also that some of the prawns seemed to be dead already. Maybe there could have been a compromise. I think eating animals is ok, but they shouldn't suffer. Nice recipe though.
if we had chopped off the head then I think it will be more gross to just have a tempura head sticking out from the sushi. my dad told me that not many people would understand our mentality (Japanese chefs who are actually in the business). I was born into this restaurant environment and I've inherited their attitude since I was little, so a little did I know it was not common for other people. So It is my fault for exposing the reality that you guys were not ready to see. I am sorry.
@Kumigar Dear Kumigar, please don t be sorry ...many people cooked with living animals since ages...and u showed clearly u did not had fun to torture the little prawns...i love animals too but i still can respect other cultures for their traditions tho! your video s are wonderful and i hope to see a lot more cooking from you <3 many greeting s and hugs from Germany sends Kitsune <3
@MsKitsunehime Thank you. I stil need to apologize to those of you who were not ready to see what I shared in this video. I totally respect other people's values and opinions, and I would not assume one way is right or wrong. As long as we live in this planet earth, I think it is important to respect each other and maintain peace regardless of different values and cultures we have. Just like you guys respect me allowing me to share my culture, I respect and appreciate all of your opinions!
@Kumigar It's pretty normal to me, even though im not born in a chef family and i dont cook. I do know that there's some chefs in China who deep fried a fish alive and even put a cold towel on it to keep it alive >.< Compared to that, i dont think this is anything. (: So don't worrry!
I agree that you could have cut the head first T_T as you're doing tempura so it doesn't need to be "just-killed"... we western ppl aren't used to this ^^;
@Kalthu1 Simmer down. Prawns have a very primitive nervous system. They don't feel "pain" like we do. I also don't see the logic in wishing the same thing on a human being, how does that make you better than the people feeding themselves? If anything it makes you even more cruel and insensitive.
Difference of culture, perhaps, but I do not like to see any animal tortured like this. You could have humanely dispatched the prawn before preparing it.
Hi Kumigar, I love all ur cooking video's but I wish u killed the prawn quick, perhaps cutting the head off? before slicing it? I really freaked out when I watched this, as much as I lovsushi & seafood, I dislike seeing things suffer... :'(
Awesome tutorial! I ♥ Sushi!!! Happy New Year to you too Kumigar! Happy Year of the Dragon!! I wish you the best for this upcoming year! Keep making more vids! I love them!! :D
@KHORBSter i feel bad for it...it's like u still have pain sensations while u're being killed slowly.....i just wish the prawn had a quick death instead of a slow one
@kumigar it's OK. I'm used to seeing live animals prepared for dinner because of my parents, but I still haven't been able to watch and not be horrified.
@Str8UPdork It came out better than I thought. My mom was telling me the flavours maybe too overwhelming, but she admitted my decision was right and she and my dad ate the rest of sushi. lol
That poor prawn!! Just when it thought life couldn't get any worse it got dipped in batter and thrown into a pan of boiling oil 0_o I bet it thought it was going through the 7 hells lol! At least you thanked it though :) I'll try it with fresh but dead instead - my last sushi was a disaster but your vids are good so I'll have another go.
Looks delicious! Getting bbq eel around here is a little difficult, but otherwise i would make this! Looks simple enough and tasty. Thanks for the video as always!
As for the prawn, i don't see what the issue is. Your already dead prawns in store would have a much worse time imo
@EnchanetdSomething I think we freak out whenever we something we are not used to. it's the nature of our human beings. I just think my mentality is more like Native people when it comes to handling food. More wild and deeper connection to the spirits of animals, I suppose. I take full responsibilities of killing those prawns. Their spirits are in my body now. I have more reasons to give myself to the world for real. lol
Kumigar, if I were a little bit older, I'll fly to Japan and try to get you to be my wife =p..love your videos, love your taste (foodwise) and you're pretty and lively...I bet thousands of men chasing you right now

I have more reasons to give myself to the world for real. lol
