The sexual tension is just candy for the gay community. The thing that survivors of will and integrity have is the ability to sublimate impulse and desire, arguably the whole point of the movie, something that makes lesser people envy and despise them more. The sexuality argument is largely a manifestation of the same desire for explicit emotion that makes slash fiction so very tawdry, weak, and shallow.
Accomplishment trumps conquest and desire is dull in execution.
Hilarious but you left out one reason why Captain Renault may have put Rick in danger- He is not in love with Rick. But who knows. Rains was a great actor and you showed how he created a multifaceted character. One of those facets could have been bisexuality. It's plausible.
I think your intelligence is misapplied here. Roger Ebert is a bonehead who suggests Captain Renault is gay... even though the overt signs are that Renault is obsessed with women... perhaps you are projecting interpretations from our currently Gayed-Up Culture back into a time when Renault's actions would not have been interpreted in this way. Do you suppose the script writers or the director told Raines "Play this guy as Gay"...Did Raines write in his memoires: Mais Oui, Renault is Gay !
That's funny, but I would have thought that aspecat of Renault was made reasonably obvious in the film. Rain's body language is frequently suggestive of it. There's even Rick's comment about Renault being 'broad-minded', implying a threesome with the young woman and her finance, which I always took as a deliberate comment on Renault's sexuality.
or to be implicated. easier to get someone he knows who is capable of murder to do it knowingly or not and then covering up or distorting the crime....a talent which he is best at.
both being businessmen they know it is not personal or to take a sporting look at it, "what happens on the ground, stays on the ground"
their relationship to me is that of mates.
BUT in your defence it would be interesting to know if the writer or director were gay. this would change things in your favour.
one is introverted and the other is extroverted. they understand, admire and respect each other. rick is a man who would, if neccessary, get his hands dirty, renault is a man that would get another mans hands dirty for his own needs. maybe this explains the ending where renault knows the nazi's are cramping his style and freedom. being french he wants them dead but doesn't want to get caught holding the "smoking gun"
they are obviously both away from home and i think this suits them both but for different reasons. for renault it is freedom and power and for rick it is to hide. although he has the most popular bar in casablanca he is private and sort of trying to fly under the radar......almost like you need the right contacts to actually meet and spend some time with him. i suspect they are near loners and would trust few. they are both "shonky' but not hard men.
i can see where you are coming from and it is indeed interesting. BUT i dis-agree.
i believe it to be a mix of a few things. of course, they need each other, rick needs renault so he can stay open......renault is a man of style and image...a dandy and in my opinion he would always be seen in all the right places and the best place is ricks. rick gets all the tip off's and protection and renault gets free reign in the place.
Mollesjohn is absolutely correct....you don't have a clue.
Bi? You're an ass!
Kinship: you need to read the cliff notes on this movie, and understand what is shared between Rick and Louis is their comradeship...military comradeship, although they didn't serve together in Spain.
I don't know what your background is, but its certainly not psychology, sociology or the movies.
Nothing Rick says or in the eyes or any body language suggests Rick is in love with Renault. Rick is principled, and Renault is not, well, not until he realizes just why he admires Rick so much at the end.
Rick cuts Renault a generous break at the end of the movie, which reflects his generous inner nature, something Renault suspects and comments on throughout the film.
It's PRINCIPLE not PHYSICAL. Fisherjeff demeans the film's lofty ending horribly.
They both went off to fuck

Why is it that gay men fawn over men they can't have.

I like the narrative, I never thought of that before.

Jeff, your narrative is very interesting. I would like to see more of what you have to see about this great actor in his other roles.

I wonder what Alvy Singer would say about this video if he heard the content being verbalized behind him in a line at the movies!!!

Claude Rains was a genius, no doubt about it.
