  • That last one looks like some sort of sci-fi beam weapon.

  • i have one of those xylos! :D

  • Woaa man this is cool...the last one was a double helix..like a DNA molecule..gr8 stuff

  • Hey Dustin, what camera did you use? I have a Rebel T2i, and I cant seem to get my lighting that bright. What were your settings? I'm sure F22, shutter around a couple minutes, and iso like 6400?

  • @EVerschoore19

Open that shuter up bro. Shoot at around F6, ISO 400

  • @EVerschoore19 lol peeps always make the same mistakes haha.........low f stop (let more light in) :) ..... iso at 6400 will make megga grain noise :( booooo shoot 200.....go too low and you will have to extend exposure to compensate .....

  • Pretty much as the mirror opens up it captures the light and slows it down to create the light trails

  • So the camera takes fast pictures of the object as it flies through the air? Open-close-Open-close?

  • the ball one looks like messy christmas lights.

  • Thumbs up for kinetic energy!

  • what's the shutter speed and the fstop of frisbee?

  • You should attach color changing LED lights to x-zylo thinger

  • how the hell do you frisbee when it's that dark :O

  • hey destin! im from ireland and looking to buy a high-speed camera, anything you can recommend??

    love the videos!

  • i used to make one of them x-zylo things with the lip of a styrofoam cup back when i was in high school. never knew it had a name. i just always did it and threw it across at lunchtime.lol

  • hey destin, i'm from brazil, and i wanted to say that i really enjoy your videos, also the positive ways you use guns, and the ideas for the videos are pretty interesting. this is my favourite one, i love pictures with long exposure. thanks for your great work! keep it up.

  • @Narigudoification

Stay posted then. I have a video coming up soon you will love!

  • haha, dancing lights :D

  • Nice video guys...Now people are actually getting even more creative with the open shutter and writing words, drawing images and motion-stills.

  • Christians having fun?

  • You'd be one excellent professor.

  • How did you do that? Can you teach me?

  • Comment removed

  • can you adopt me?.....

  • can you do this on just any camera? me and a friend did this with his $3000 dollar camera and the outcome was preety cool.

  • that is amazing!!!!!!!

  • done some light painting before, just with torches, y'know, single flash at the start of the image and then using a torch to draw based around what is there. did some pretty cool stuff with drawing light drumkits and guitars and light stickmen on the toilet. must say though that that ball looked freakin' sweet.

  • i love my xylo. it is awesome that you own one too!

  • dude i just started watching you today my favorit one is the match lighting with the bullets

  • hey destin i like how you respond to ccomments evn from videos this old i think that is pretty cool. most other youtubers dont do that

  • @filkie

I know, the old stuff is sometimes more fun that the news stuff because we had no idea how to make videos then and it was even more about the science. Sometimes now we try a couple of extra takes to get the right shot. Back then it was all "hey! Let's do this!"

  • wow, i haven't seen an Xylo (spelling?) for many years... i had a couple of them about 15 years ago, and after i learned how to throw them properly they weren't to difficult to lose, lol..

  • very cool

  • As a photographer I really enjoy see this!

  • what kind of camera do you use sir?

  • is that one of the world theme songs from Spyro?

  • How was it so light in the picture

  • i like how he's like i know cool and it really wasnt that cool jk

  • But...does it blend?

  • yo, what's a shutter?

  • @Corn3yman

In the case of a DSLR it's a curtain type mechanism that opens and shuts in front of the sensor in order to expose the chip.

  • whats ur flickr page?

  • I felt like i was in the Matrix.

  • that is awesume

  • We're going to have fun with SCIENCE

  • Long exposure+stobe light+moving things=

  • how many times did you use the word neat in the first 1 min? :O

  • Hey @destinws2, if you get this message, do you know how to create light painting videos?

  • 2:14 light trail makes a little person on the right

  • stoners

  • Amazing 0.o If they taught school like this we all would be smart, you earned my Like ^^

  • idk I kinda like the high iso for these images. btw it's not open shutter it's called long exposure.

  • @SkylineG35tuner

    False. Blackbear.

  • @TheCaphits It can go ethier way, but as I am Majoring in Photography, and run an Automotive/Sports photography business im pretty fucking sure I know what im talking about, otherwise i wouldn't have commmented. btw i liked the higher iso images because everyone who has done light trials or long exposure photography has a darker background. it was nice to see a fresh perspective of a played idea. not saying they were unoriginal, but they arent the first to do it.

  • whay the ISO is so high?! try it again with a lower ISO!

  • The word neat was murdered today police is trying to locate that man in the video.

  • I don't understand how this works. And now I absolutely must learn more about photography.

  • This explains how some of the "ghost" hoax images are made. Smarter every day indeed.....

Thumbs up if you want to see them create some really creepy ghost encounters!

  • what things can i do in my own house??

  • Awesome!!

  • The slow mo guys brought me here!

  • i allway draw stuff with my laser using that technicue. its cool : )

  • I love exposure photography, these are so awesome.

  • just found out about you guys and you are so awesome! Subscribed for sure!!! :O

  • pause it on :03 seconds

  • I like this!

My only question is what do you set your focus as because my light drawings always end up blurry.

  • after 3:00 its a bunch of double helix strands

  • X-Zylo looks like rail guns being shot...

  • how do you not have more views!

you should really thank the slowmo guys I hadn't heard of you before tonight and all I can say is OMG how!

  • gahh this is so amazing! except for the noise in some of the pics

  • U guys have a lot of extra time on ur hands

  • @Coolbreezemcm

I believe you meant to say "a lot of science on your hands"

  • @destinws2 nice

  • @destinws2 Your science is BAD ASS too bad i failed it in high school haha

  • how did you make more than 30 sec. exposures !?!!?

  • @aboha6

    Intervalometer

  • @aboha6 you can change the shutter to bulb mode but with digital photography and long shutter time you will end up with what is called artifacting

  • 3:21 ray gun

  • nice. I really liked the last two. :)

  • AHHHHH ITS TRON !!! KILL IT WITH FIRE !!!

  • Small world, I used to live in Huntsville, did you go to UAH? Cool videos too.

  • neat^^

  • We used to do extended exposures from bridges to capture car headlights and tail lights. Now I think most of us would just Photoshop an image. Photoshop really has taken a lot of the fun out of photography. Thanks for the video, you got some great effects.

  • 3 people do not like conic sections. They live a sad life.

  • the last one looks like the shit from portal 2

  • in some of them, you can see little ghost type things where they were standing

  • Nevermind sorry. I just found a comment where destin answered someone else.

  • Why is it light outside when they do the open-shutter? I don't understand.

  • this is why i love photography and geometry!

  • Nice, pretty pictures ... don't get why you felt the need to pimp the Flying Spaghetti Monster at the end tho

  • You are totally awesome, Destin! I just have a question.... how come it looked like the sun was out even though it was dark, yet you couldn't see the people?

  • @01234skyblue

The shutter was open for 30 seconds or so. Even though the light is REALLY dark..... the longer the shutter stays open, think of it "stacking up" on the sensor. This makes it look like daytime.

  • @destinws2 night vision? :D

  • @destinws2 So basically the shutter take pictures like a video camera and in the end puts all the pictures together on top of eachother to make a whole picture?

  • @kbman99 no it's a single image over a long period of time

  • @destinws2 But it looks like it was pitch black. Apparently it wasn't.

  • @01234skyblue Also specifically, the reason you cant see THEM is that they are moving around. if they stood still their image would brighten up in that spot like the tried but if they move it may get darker and brighter and wont solidfy

  • The last one looked like DNA

  • This is incredible! My brothers and I need to do something like this so they can see how science can be fun.

  • double helix, all the way 3:09

  • What's most amazing is how incredibly detailed and ...well...'light' the background is. I know that the camera with normal shutter speed probably made it look a lot darker then it would have looked to a human eye, but how much brighter are the images you took with open shutter compared to what you actually saw with your own eyes? They look just like daylight photos (on an overcast day maybe, but still *day*) which is kind of amazing....

  • trippyyyyyy

  • That is so Amazing. Looks super bad-ass. Good Job

  • I wonder why it's all jittery instead of smooth, like most high speed photography.

  • I love toying around with long exposures at night. What ISO did you shoot these at? It looks like it was fairly high, I might have stepped down a little.

  • @geniusdog254

The X-zylo pic was taken at 3200 ISO. This was before I had any software that could filter out the noise from the sensor.

  • @destinws2 Ah okay. I figured it was 1600 or 3200. Why not shoot at 400 or 800 and a longer shutter speed? You could get some neater trails, and less noise.

  • @destinws2 If you where doing it at night how was there enough light to show the background like it was in daylight or is that just the main purpose of using a shutter?

  • sweeeeeet

  • lol...you have entered the twilight zone....on you video cam....lmao i bet it'll be even harder to play hide and go seek

  • @dmapleto

    Sorry to disappoint you

  • @destinws2 Don't listen to that clown. It's really cool stuff. Maybe it's not gonna be on the cover of National Geographic, but it's still fun.

  • @dmapleto

Why are the pics poor? 90% of the people don't even know how to take pictures with a long shuttertime...

    I think they're neat.

  • why didnt your bodies show up in the stills, when the trees and everything else did? is it because yall were moving and the trees were inanimate? just trying to understand this stuff a little better

  • @Tyler9603 The trees would have been in one spot reflecting what little light there was the whole time, be it stars or moonlight or whatever. The people didn't show up because they weren't in one spot long enough to reflect enough light on the sensor.

  • @geniusdog254 i was thinking that was why. thanks for the reply!

  • This video was amazing guys, I want to learn more about photography now, thanks. ^_^

What kind of camera is good for accomplishing techniques shown here in your videos?

  • @PatAaron519

Any SLR or DSLR will do this easily

  • how do u do that!!

  • @karis1202

Open the shutter and leave it open.

  • "We like to do strange things with our cameras."

  • HHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  • wizardry...

  • in the stills you look like predator kinda

  • Where did you get that bouncy ball???? O.O

  • I did this last night, it's surprisingly awesome and fun to do. I'm definitely gonna do it again soon with some more lights!

  • Tha ball wa sSICK :)

  • This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing, the ball photos have to be my favorite :D

  • The frisbee would of been cooler if the light changed colour faster so it would be like a rainbow.

  • Love the xzylo, got one myself.

  • This is awesome. I don't know anything about photography, but this is something very cool.

  • that so cool the ball was the best

  • yo bro.i'm dragon.i know how to play it

  • Thank you for your video. You did a great job.

  • awesome idea using the items that change color

  • coool video!

  • you should hold out on buyiny the t1i the t2i is about to come out.

  • So in pitch black (almost) the trees and everything lit up? That is awesome. I plan on buying a T1i in the next few weeks.

  • After a 90 second exposure it will do that...

  • That's awesome. Really looking forward to my T1i! Thanks for posting this.

  • @destinws2 What ISO did you use? Also these photos were amazing!

  • @mrjimmyos

Various ISOs depending on the relative light difference between the item and the background. For the XZylo we had to pump it up to 1600 or so I think. For the frisbee it was much lower if I recall. Maybe 200 or 400?

  • @destinws2 Ah, interesting, I thought I had to stick with 200

  • The Xylo sort of looks like a railgun in Q3. :)

  • Could you actually catch the ball or Frisbee when it was thrown to you? Would it sometimes peg you?

Also, how would you know where the camera was when you were walking back toward it? Did your headlight give enough light to see it or did you have reflective tape on the tripod?

  • Yeah we could catch it. Depth perception was a little hard, but we could do it. Yes, it would peg us. replay the video and you can see the 'drops' on the still images.

The camera had a small LED on the front to show it's recording. Thanks for watching! Try it yourself!

  • great job guys!

  • hell yeah!!

  • i liked the ball the best, but how come you could see the trees like daytime, but not youguys?

  • In short, we were moving and the trees weren't. Since the exposures were anywhere between 30 and 90 seconds, we would have to be still for at least half that time for the chip to pick up anything more than a ghost image of us due to the weak exposure.

  • :D wow that is really cool.

  • the trees had enough light to reflect?

or did you have rear flash?

  • SO darn Cool! I have a canon G9 and still learning how to do different things within it. Will have to get the darn book out and see if I can set it to leave the shutter open...

  • Comment removed

  • interesting at all!

  • Hey, your flickr site doesn't have the "torque vector" thing's pictures... those were the best.

  • Okey Dokey... I put them up for you!

  • That was great! Well done.

  • Was going to rag on you a bit for dropping the frisbe, but it actually looked good in the photos. Well done.

  • Love this!!

ah where to start, ive often wanted to film in near dark though my eyes see perfect the camera does not lol, open shutter works awesome! you could just trace the movement.

    superb!

    : )

  • Thanks :D :D

This was sweet, I wanna go learn about cameras now and do some of my own photos here in Chicago :)

  • that was cool

  • The ball, Very cool.

  • Also, the trails from the X-Zylo look like the Railgun slug vapor trails from Quake II. Did you happen to steal that railgun from Redstone Arsenal?

  • Shhh! Don't give away all my secrets!

  • I love how the photocell picks up the ambient light in what seems to our eyes like pitch black, and the long exposure makes it look like daytime. Freaking awesome.

  • its fun to do that, but take a Laser Pointer and draw on a wall with it :D
