If anyone thinks that Alfie should play Jean Valjean in the film of Les Miserables add your names to the petition - details on Alfie's Facebook page....
@lheartZorro nope you're wrong Colm sings first, JOJ second, Simon Bowman 3rd and the mighty Alfie last. Went to see Les Miz a couple of weeks ago and Simon is playing the curent JVJ until the excellent Alfie takes over this week - JOJ is doing Phantom.
@TheCraigos04 Read what I wrote, please. I *wrote * " The second guy to sing, the one standing next to Colm, is John Own Jones. He's the blond. Simon Bowman is the third guy to sing. He's the one with curly brown hair." Somewhere in the past I identified Colm as first and Boe as fourth, either for this video or another. You must have me mixed up with someone else -like the person who claimed he was a musical theater professional and had connexions to the OM cast who mixed up JOJ and SB
Alfie Boe goes to play Jean Val Jean at the end of June this year, just been to see it on Tuesday night with John Owen Jones as Val Jean. great he was! excited to go back to see Alfie though :D
@BecomeMyNewCat Alfie Boe never actually played ValJean. He only sang it in the 25th anniversary. John Owen-Jones is the second one to sing I'm pretty sure.
@scottyrudders No, JOJ is the second one to sing. He's the one standing next to Colm Wilkinson. The third one is Simon Bowman, who is standing next to Alfie Boe.
@IheartZorro No you're completely wrong - my friend is in Les Miserables i've been out in London with these people. JOJ is the third man, the second man is Simon. I went to see this Tuesday the 14th of June this year for the 11th time and it JOJ that was Val Jean. I'm on Facebook with a photo of JOJ. Please, I'm a musical theatre professional. I've done West End tours of Whistle down the wind and Evita. I have contacts. I know who the cast are!!
@scottyrudders I don't believe you have the credentials you claim. The second guy to sing, the one standing next to Colm, is John Own Jones. He's the blond. Simon Bowman is the third guy to sing. He's the one with curly brown hair. Since people here don't have the contacts you claim (which I don't believe), all they have to do to decide which of us correct is to google the names of the two men and photos will come up to back up *my* claim of who sings when. Perhaps you just mixed them up.
@NYocum0310 Actually, Boe took over the role from Simon Bowman in the Queen's theater performances for a couple weeks before the O2 performance. And he's played it at least once since then. He's scheduled for his own run starting in a week or so, for about 6 mos.
@NYocum0310 OK, I see what you mean. Yeah, Alfie was cast for the O2 without having played
Valjean, though he's been singing on some stage or other for over 20 years. JOJ's been Valjean on and off for a while - since his mid-20s. Not sure about when Simon Bowman first started this role. Norm Lewis did Javert on Broadway a few years ago, but would be unknown in the UK. Seems they wanted 'new blood,' 'next generation' etc for O2, fitting in with all the schoolkids coming in at the end.
i bet those two dislikes are just so they are different from the rest of us. but damn. those tears done my face do make me feel different. (stand ovation) LES MISERABLE is amazingly beautiful .
Alfie Boe's key change is ridiculously good. As good as the other Valjean's are, especially Colm....Alfie's voice blows them out of the water. INCREDIBLE!
I love Alfie Boe's body language when he comes in to sing his part. There's so much passion there. Some people criticized him for acknowledging the audience when he sang this solo, but I think he realizes what he has is a gift and deeply appreciates the reponse he gets.
I love the respect JOJ has for Colm. At the end where he steps back on the final note and let Colm sing with all his awesomeness. Amazing talent and respect they all share. You know Boe has a man crush on Colm too.
the audio is off...anyways, i posted this on other versions of this clip (someone's cam)..and i asked the same question..Where the hell is Gary Morris?
Just watched this on the Blu-Ray version. Absolutely amazing. Colman is still the man, but I am absolutely astounded with Alfie's voice and all the harmonies. Kinda wish they had harmonized the last note, but hey, still awesome.
When I first watched this, I was wondering why Alfie wasn't featured sooner. Then, he came in and I put a hole in my house with the force of my piss. So good.
I have watched this video hundreds of times and it still brings a tear to my eye, one of the best ever performances, if not the best, I have ever heard!
I think I just watched this clip for the 47,000th time. I could watch it another 47,000 times. Goosebumps every time. Can we submit this clip to the Smithsonian Institute, do you think?
Omgosh I could watch this more than a million times and I wouldn't get sick of it! Gave me goose bumps, they're so talented, so amazing! AH! and who is who from left to right?
@BrooKeySinger From left to right: Simon Bowman (from original Miss Saigon), Alfie Boe, Colm Wilkinson and John Owen-Jones. Simon was then-current Queens Theater Valjean, Alfie the O2 Valjean (for which this is an encore), Colm the original Valjean from 25 years ago, and John the then-current Valjean from the UK tour of Les Miz.
I was listening to this thinking, "Yeah, they're doing pretty well. " Then Alfie Boe joined in and I was like, "Why don't the rest of you go home? He totally kicked your butts!" If anyone had doubts about him being as good as the other ValJeans, I think he removed all doubt with that one note.
@LOTR4ever1 Yes, he did dispell a certain degree of doubt with this performance. But I wouldn't go as far as to say that he kicked their butts, nor that they should go home. They are there for the same reason he is. Because they are the best at playing Valjean. To enjoy good music is to enjoy all of it, and appreciate every sound for what it adds to the piece. Don't be so easily dismissive simply because you were thrilled by a high note.
@LOTR4ever1 I don't think you are being fair. Every one of these guys is superb. What we have is a key change that plays to Alfie's strengths. That's fine, but don't slag off fine vocalists who have given lots of people lots of happiness.
@two1065 Very true. I should've been more tactful in my comment. I apologize. As I told FatherFizz, it comes to a matter of an opinion. I think every ValJean is fantastic (heck, they can sing boatloads better than I can!)....but I prefer Boe. If they had given a key change to another ValJean, then maybe I would post differently. But I like Boe particularly in this song.
alfie's white shirt is his costume in the finale. the original cast came on stage immediately following the curtain call for the 25th anniversary cast to begin the encores. with the exception of colm who is not currently preforming, all valjeans were in their correct costumes. the staging, key change, etc. is the director's vision, not the cast's.
I saw this on a random channel and heard about six seconds of this song (right when he says "If I die, let me die) and I was in tears. Literally sobbing and having to stand up to try to breathe.....I haven't had a voice make me cry since I heard Josh Groban's Awake.
I think that John Owen Jones is amazingly powerful no matter what he does... I saw Simon Bowman performing today and I really loved his rendition of this song...
@Kasino80 I think it was only the then-current Valjeans who were in costume. Alfie obviously just from the performance, JOJ from the touring cast and SB from the West End cast in theirs. Colm is the emeritus Valjean - no current costume. I doubt that it was the decision of the players. I noted in the Variety performance Alfie was dressed as here (eye-catching white shirt) while all the others wore black, but not costume. You'll have to ask the director why he chose to dress them that way :)
@IheartZorro regarding the white shirt Alfie's wearing, I think it's Valjean's death robes...the variaty concert was also in costume right? The same concert as this one?
@Kasino80 I don't know if they have the complete variety up. Alfie was in convict's garb for the Soliloquy there. Then it seems he changed to the white shirt/black trousers. I don't think the Royal Variety had the death scene. Anyway, here clearly Alfie is just off from performing and has no time to change. In the Variety, he changes, but not to the same costume as the others. I think the director there could have had everyone in black trousers/jackets to equalize them. But not my show :)
I just found out that Alfie is going to be Valjean when I go to London to see Les Miserables... I will see phantom and les mis. John Owen-Jones as phantom and Alfie Boe as Valjean. How lucky am I?!?! :O
I absolutely lovedthis, I like how there's no trying to outdo each other and that they all obviously love the song...but most of all I love how Colm Wilkinson is the only one not in costume from the show hehe, what a lad
Alfie Boe looks like the student teacher in my chorus class. So now I can't look at the teacher without thinking of les mis. That's ok, though, because I love this musical.
At first when I realized Colm wasn't singing Jean Valjean, I was disappointed, but after listening to Alfie Boe for awhile, I feel he's the next generation Valjean - what a voice!! and expression of feeling! I'm now a fan of both.
@SpeedyBookWorm I agree. I'm just as sentimental as the next girl, but Wilkinson and company were no match for Alfie Boe. You're watching, thinking, "Wow. These guys really have talent". Then, Alfie Boe pipes up, and blows them all out of the water. He's incredible.
@lapticul Ah. I'm assuming you mean Alfie's entrance volume. Just because *you* would need to scream to attain the volume that Alfie manages so easily on account of his operatic training, does not mean that *Alfie* is screaming.
If you don't like the sound of operatic voices, say that. But it is way different from screaming.
Colm Wilkinson will forever be the greatest Jean Valjean! But they're all phenomenal and disgustingly good...

Why is everyone except Colm wearing the Valjean outfit? It was only Alfie Boe as Valjean in this performance, right?
Kasino80 9 months ago
@Kasino80 I think it was only the then-current Valjeans who were in costume. Alfie obviously just from the performance, JOJ from the touring cast and SB from the West End cast in theirs. Colm is the emeritus Valjean - no current costume. I doubt that it was the decision of the players. I noted in the Variety performance Alfie was dressed as here (eye-catching white shirt) while all the others wore black, but not costume. You'll have to ask the director why he chose to dress them that way :)
IheartZorro 9 months ago
@IheartZorro regarding the white shirt Alfie's wearing, I think it's Valjean's death robes...the variaty concert was also in costume right? The same concert as this one?
Kasino80 9 months ago
@Kasino80 I don't know if they have the complete variety up. Alfie was in convict's garb for the Soliloquy there. Then it seems he changed to the white shirt/black trousers. I don't think the Royal Variety had the death scene. Anyway, here clearly Alfie is just off from performing and has no time to change. In the Variety, he changes, but not to the same costume as the others. I think the director there could have had everyone in black trousers/jackets to equalize them. But not my show :)

Michael Ball's reaction makes this.

Alfie Boe just whooped the 3 veteran Jean Valjeans.
This song gives me MAJOR GOOSEBUMPS!!!!!!
<3 this song!!!!!!!!!
SpeedyBookWorm 10 months ago 5
@SpeedyBookWorm I agree. I'm just as sentimental as the next girl, but Wilkinson and company were no match for Alfie Boe. You're watching, thinking, "Wow. These guys really have talent". Then, Alfie Boe pipes up, and blows them all out of the water. He's incredible.
suzannemm73 9 months ago
@SpeedyBookWorm screaming is not singing
lapticul 9 months ago
@lapticul Ah. I'm assuming you mean Alfie's entrance volume. Just because *you* would need to scream to attain the volume that Alfie manages so easily on account of his operatic training, does not mean that *Alfie* is screaming.
If you don't like the sound of operatic voices, say that. But it is way different from screaming.
