Penn's most ridiculous argument is how there are never any headlines about martial artists 'saving the day'.
There are dozens of people in the US who dress up in costumes and go on 'patrol' every night looking for trouble. Not only do you never hear about masked assholes stopping a mugger or rapist, you never hear about them getting shot either. You literally have to be in exactly the wrong place at the right time to stop a crime BEFORE it happens.
This clip of Jim Carrey as a Martial Arts Instructor on "In Living Color" a comedy show from the 1990s says it all: "Like a lot of beginning students,... you attacked me wrong." LOL!
In China, place of origin for Taiji (aka Tai Chi in cantonese), it is more commonly regarded as a form of exercise popular among old people. Younger people also practice it sometimes, but it is extremely uncommon. Its mystical qualities are only discussed as urban legends. Baffles me how Taiji practioners are regarded as ubermensch here in the west.
also these days people take martial arts for a bunch of other reasons too. things like yoga and martial arts are really marketable once you add the tags "sport," "fitness," "weight-loss," etc. there are tons of reasons why people want to study them. it's narrow-minded to take one small aspect and insult something for it.
in terms of self defence, instructors will always tell you to hand over your money or run away where possible. martial arts are about discipline, respect, confidence, reflection. also, there are rare occasions where you might not have the opportunity to just hand over your wallet or run away. if martial arts were only about saving the contents of your wallet every once in a blue moon when you get mugged, they wouldn't still be practised all over the world :/
Martial Arts are bullshit. At the end of the day, it's all about size and strength in a true real life fight. After having been in a few fights there is one thing I have learned. Fair fights are for pay-per-view. You use anything and everything around you to protect yourself. Beer bottles, sets of keys, rolls of nickels, chairs, knives, guns, literally anything. Worry about the consequences later
@knothead89 Size and strength only get you so far in any fight. Try fighting
a high level full-contact martial artist who is smaller than you.
The idea behind that “size doesn’t matter” is an exaggeration from the highly skilled martial artist beating an untrained (and unarmed) bigger (and stronger) opponent. And also, you may not have the luxury of being able to find a random weapon (or be able to pull out one on you) while in the middle of a scuffle.
I have never been in a fight for two reasons, it's for agressive dumbfucks who get their joy out of life by fighting (nonsense) and two it's not even worth my time & effort. Oh yea and maybe a third is that i don't feel better while doing it, or even when i win. You better smoke some weed, get drunk, sniff some of that shit, or fuck a woman. Yes, better things to do.
This particular show is really, really uninformed. I am a HUGE Penn and Teller fan. I am also a martial artist. Most of the people they chose to represent the MA community here are, in fact, wingnuts. Martial arts, aside from teaching you how to defend yourself from rapists and other psychopaths, also have the added benefit of being a great form of exercise and are a valid sport practiced around the world (not to mention the Olympics in two forms: Judo and Taekwondo).
Penn... I love you man. I really do but... what if someone is pointing a gun at my family, he has no demands, and I have the opportunity to disarm him? Do you really think, in this situation, that martial arts are bullshit? What about a woman learning martial arts to defend against a rapist? What about police officers/ military learning MA to use in the line of duty? You get the point. I agree with 95 percent of what you guys say but I that martial arts are bullshit? Not all the time:)
@JohnMuise I KNOW LIKE WTF IS GOING ON IN THE WESTERN WORLD IF YOU GO TO ANY SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRY OR AFRICA OR LATINA AMERICA SOMEONE TRIES TO HURT YOU YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF WITHOUT LEGAL RAMIFICATION DAM I HATE LIVING HERE IN THE WEST WE GOT A LOT THINGS GOING FOR US EXCEPT FOR COMMON FUCKING
wrong, they didn't save time and money, they saved money, he gave his "time" piece to the thief...........and sit back wait for the trolls.....mwahahahahahahaha
About 95% of martial arts is bullshit . And about 90% of martial artists are pussies . However there is a little martial art that comes in handy and some martial artists can fight .
The episode is a bit misleading. What they're basically saying is that if you want to defend yourself from your every-day criminal, your best bet is to just give them your shit because it's a lot easier and you don't get in trouble etc. If you fight them then you risk hurting them and/or hurting yourself and have to go through court/possible jail time etc etc. Obviously if you just enjoy martial arts because you train to fight people in the ring it's a different story.
@Pager1991 yeah, I took a class when I was a kid too. They pretty much taught us to avoid fights anyways because, hey, getting into bad shit is....not a good thing.
@Pager1991 this comment is a bit mislead as they talk about self defense and they don't mention fighting for sport so obviously they're not talking about that in this episode. Penn & Teller made this for people who can put 2 & 2 together, that being one of them. Also it is strongly recommend not fighting back (in cases of theft/hostage) so to not put oneself in unnecessary danger, that's the main point, the rest Penn says while being true is still just playful banter and not the main
@Sh1tDisturber The thing is, any Martial Arts teacher worth their salt will say the exact same thing to you... Never fight when you don't have to. Only in situations where your life is in danger. A thief looking for money will, the vast majority of the time, simply run off after you give them what they want. But yea, there are a lot of crap instructors out there which is why I personally quit years ago. A good way to tell crap from quality, if you can gain a black belt in only a year... CRAP.
@Pager1991 the episode "Teen sex" isn't about how teens having sex is bullshit
and that's what I'm telling you, the Title doesn't tell you what the episode is all about you learn that through listening to what there talking about try it
@Pager1991 Thank you for clearing that up there not saying all of martial arts is bad and if they had time to touch on the issue they would have said its ok for that
There are headlines Penn-- a couple weeks ago on yahoo news, two jiu jitsu guys helped stop a store robbery. UFC champion Jon Jones stopped a dude that just robbed an elderly couple... a few hours before his last fight. There was also an IFL fighter that stopped a restaurant robbery in progress.
@TheProjektcc So if a guy grabs your girlfriend's ass, you're gonna put a bullet in them? Don't think so... That is if you even have a a gun. Or a girlfriend.
no guy is gonna grab your girl if you have a gun. Crime levels are at there lowest in states have have conceal carry laws. Look it up yourself. The criminals are scared cause they don't know who might be packing heat.
By the way you never even have to pull it out just repeat the phrase I have a gun maybe even show it to them and that will get the job done. 90 % of the game is fear.. that why I'll never have to put a bullet in anyone.
@TheProjektcc Have you ever been assaulted? A gun is useless if 3 guys surround you with knives or guns, you won't be quick enough to draw your weapon and you'll probablly get killed needlessly.
Love P&T, but they blew it with this - big time. They could have said there were some "martial artists" who are full of crap, but instead the set out to denigrate the entire scope of what is a valid form of meditation, exercise, and a great way of building confidence, teamwork and athleticism.
Penn & Teller - YOU'RE BULLSHIT this time. Find some real athletes and good teachers, and then pass your asshole judgement.
why dont they intervju real martial arts teachers from the origin contries, like china and japan? woudnt that be more accurate? sorry my spelling, swedish :P
@UncleRob199 Thank you! The last time I checked, most reputable martial arts teach that actually striking someone should be an absolute last resort. Hence Mr. Miyagi and Daniel San's famous boat conversation: "Why train?" "So I won't have to fight." "Hahaha you all wet behind EAR! HAHAHA" So on, so forth...=)
@BroJeetKune Totally agreed, and I like penns opinions too usually. Here I think the whole message is not phrased right. It should be 'some people who teach martial arts are bullshit'. Not 'martial arts are bullshit' I personally take martial arts to mean more literally 'MARSHAL arts' because it's about channeling energy and the structural engineering of your body. Nothing to do with violence.
One thing that is real bullshit is kicking or chopping a boards, my friend is a black belt in taekwondo and she told me all those board they bought are breakable.
What bullshit? "Martial arts, in its purest form, is about self-defense." The Japanese developed martial arts to take over and kill the near by cities. Martial arts are just a tool to use how one chooses.
If anyone ever tried to hold me up at gun point, I'd give them my wallet, and then when they turned around to run off I would pull out my thirty eight special and blow their fucking skull out.
They are wrong on martial arts, I have trained it. It's great for training your self control...coordination and discipline. It's great physical work too and the moves works, at least the ones in jiujitsu, karate is probably crap yes.
hopefully they are are just talking about the western world. in the eastern society, martial arts is a form of meditation and discipline. most people there dont do martial arts 'just in case someone attacks you'
@pittkid42 yeah lol, i was wondering that too. until I realized, once you get your fill of bullshit, wipe it off with a good ol' wank over some big titted blonde bint
martial arts aren't total bullshit in a hand to hand situation. if you train to fight of course you be better at fighting. soldiers train for hand to hand combat for a reason and that could be called a martial art.
@MrROTD I agree they're really putting this in a context of MA versus criminals and bangers. But if you get in a fight (versus another normally rational human being) at a bar MA could totally help. The only problem is people in MA don't think rational sometimes. One time I saw a guy use MA against a man who outweighed him by 50 lbs at least.
@MrROTD From boxing to MMA, all are martial arts. Every country, every culture has developed a system of self defense either armed or unarmed; traditional, folk, technical, eastern, western, you name it. Now depending on what you want to get out of it, you'll find it useful or not. Now if you follow Penn's advice, you might just end up with your ass kicked while being covered in chocolate. Every martial art does emphasize to avoid a confrontation whenever possible
@MrROTD sometimes that's not possible. We have always live in a violent world, with a veneer of civility. There are humanoids out there who will try to hurt you, why not have an ability or skill to at least defend yourself? That's NOT bullshit!
What Penn doesn't realize is that Tai Chi was MEANT to look like a pretty little dance. The forms hidden in the soft movements are much more defensive than they appear.
yeah, go to Gracie Brazilian jiu-jitsu academy and tell them martial arts is bullshit, you'll be walking out with 2 broken arms and a change of heart.
@KarLTshirt Oh, I'll go in. And you know what I can do? I can bring a handgun, and if the guy I wanna shoot is more than 5 feet away from me, im fairly sure that he'll be dead on the ground before he can lay a finger on me. The point is that once firearms get involved, martial arts are USELESS. Before that point, sure, go crazy.
@forgottencitizen Yeah, that's completely true, I just get annoyed when someone might try and tell you that martial arts will help you against gunmen. But I admit wholeheartedly that in pretty much all other conflicts, with some training you'll have the edge.
@Jageri1 Who the hell said that martial arts was made to defend you in a situation with firearms? Its not like every fight that happens ends up with people getting shot, what if your at knife point, or just getting into a fight with no weapons? youre just going to hand over your money and not defend yourself? and what about women who are rape victims? are they just supposed to suck it up and take it instead of defending themselves? Nobody says "if he had a gun, id put him in a rear naked choke"
@vampirehunter42 No, did you watch it? The first part says belts came from Okinawan Karate - they didn't. No martial art had belt ranking until Judo, which Kano introduced as it followed his pedagological background - progressively higher grading like a school. The second part does not address this long standing myth about belt ranking, despite the fact that it points out the sham that most MA belt systems are. That was the point of my post - the info was inaccurate.
@TheJudoKevin Yep, and just a little bit into it they say just what you said. They allow the people to say the stupid stuff then bring in the real expert to correct them. And more or less said the belt system is BS. Remember the guy that was talking about the "belt system" was one of the idiots they were making fun of. So don't attack the show for showing the wrong information.
the first guys name is mike reeves, mike reeves lives in america, a capitalist society. he sells the idea that you can defends yourself. he is a liar. because people that teach actual martial arts do not offer contracts in order to skip belts. good martial art instruction is difficult to come by in america.
I hold a black belt in Taekwondo. I have also been practicing MMA for about 3 years now. I can honestly say that pretty much most of the things that we learn within the school are not applicable to real life "fight" situations. It seems to be more of a sport these days than anything else. However, I do believe some of the things that were taught to myself and others provide at least a basis on "how" to fight. I feel that when my friends and I roughhouse, I definitely have an edge over them.
Before I watch this, I gots my opinion. I do this so I don't come out seeming biased. Martial arts is exactly what the name implies: Art. Some techniques are twisted, changed, and utilized in professional fighting. But as we all know, real "I hate you and I want you to die" fighting is nothing like sport fighting. Get locked up for a few weeks and you'll see what I'm talking about. Try to put that death eyed nazi in an arm bar and see how things turn out.
I thought this would have been obvious to anyone who does martial arts that you never take exactly what you learn in the normal syllabus and use it in a normal fighting situation. You just take the basis of it.
I've never hit anyone in my life, and I definitely wouldn't involve myself in a fight - But if I ever find myself being seriously attacked, and there's absolutely no option but to fight back, I have one rule and one rule alone.....Bite, and go for the nuts!
martial arts will help and hinder you i have the ability to defend myself and i will when attacked but when im attacking i have to realize i cant worry about hurting him it has to be done so i souldent hold back
I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I'm also a police officer. I would never, EVER use any of the shit I learned in TKD. It just doesn't work very well in the real world, and my instructor always told us that. We were WTF TKD, which is basically boxing, but with kicks. Within the confines of the sport, it was great. Outside, not so much.
I almost got riled. Almost. Then I remembered: this show is about entertainment, not informative research. Penn and Teller's conclusions were made before they ever started interviewing people. They said, "martial arts are bullshit--now how can we justify that statement?"
Oh, incidentally--compliance with violent criminals increases your chances of injury or death, and violent resistance is a proven effective deterrent.
these are bullshit martial arts what does he expect; plus it takes years to actually be good at a martial art and many are not made for street fighting so this episode should change its name to: Mcdojo martial arts bullshit.
I for one would not like to see a jiu jitsu black belt/ muay thai kick boxer in an alley at night, theyl kick your fkin head off.
@fuckyou222b The problem is that just because someone is a black belt in style "x" means nothing, You're putting an unrealistic ideal that anyone with a black belt in those styles are super fighters, which is not true.
My name is also Damian, and that joke was pretty lazy. I hate it when people think they're being funny when telling "The Omen" references or satanic stuff at me because that's my name.
If that chick had a breast reduction, she'd likely get rid of her neck, back and shoulder pains. It was not exactly hard to see what the problem was. If women keep their breasts that big at her age, they're just asking for pain.
@vain911 I suppose exercise would help, but it would still be a problem. At some point in her life she'd still have to get a breast reduction, so why not get one as soon as she starts experiencing neck, back and shoulder pains? Her breasts are huge and must weigh a ton. I can't see how it can ever be comfortable, even if she starts exercising.
I forget where I heard this, but didn't karate or something develop the way it did because peasants needed a way to defend themselves from Samurai (who were legally allowed to kill them for looking at them funny under the Tokugawa Shogunate) because they were prohibited from owning swords? Why do we think that the techniques intended for use against oversized novelty knives are any good against a Colt 1911?
Just watched the before intro scene, and nothing else. I think I'm skipping the rest. I love Penn and Teller, they are funny, entertaining, and even educational and down right, well, right quite a bit of the time. However, I happen to have a liking for the martial arts, and don't think they're bullshit. They are free of their opinion and any proof for using this against fighting muggers, and I admit it might be stupid. I'd like to learn it only because I can say I know how to actually fight.
@DarkAngryWolf9 Because you know there is that asshole you run into who thinks he can beat you up, or say "I can kick your ass!" He says that, then you see him pathetically flail about, while you expertly dodge, and hit him hard, fast, and properly.
God damnit, Tai Chi is an effective marital art but it's been highjacked by new age snake oil salesmen. It is almost impossible to find anyone who knows and who can teach the martial applications in the US and has therefore been almost entirely castrated. But if you look at its history, people who actually use and teach it effectively like Ren GuangYi or William Chen, and the principles it teaches (filtered through modern understanding) you'll see it does offer applicable knowledge for fighting
Lol, starting to contradict yourself now huh? Well at least you're starting to think logically with me that the open/empty hand fighting WAS not the reason that groups protected themselves. I would have to assume if that was the case, it was short lived, thus, only delaying the take over. I think weapons are great with tactics, but the better technology has more advantages, to say it doesnt is silly.
@ericgustafson81 I'm not starting to contradict myself. I am saying that MA aren't the sole reason for independence. They were created for survival and were used for this purpose, but cannot be given 100% credit for liberation. You cannot judge the effectiveness of a martial art by whether or not a group was liberated, but you can use the battles/ferocity of a group using martial arts to do so. What I said was that MA were used to defend people from oppression. Read carefully next time.
@cooperon1229 Well yes, you can say MA was helped in defending people from oppression, but holy shit, so was eating that week, and getting sleep, etc. Please show me the effectiveness of MA and helping them defend another group off, and lets be honest, show me how the empty/open hand fighting helped, since thats what were really talking about here. , I've heard those fairy tales too by my instructors, but theres no evidence, just st

also these days people take martial arts for a bunch of other reasons too. things like yoga and martial arts are really marketable once you add the tags "sport," "fitness," "weight-loss," etc. there are tons of reasons why people want to study them. it's narrow-minded to take one small aspect and insult something for it.
ubersum1 2 weeks ago
in terms of self defence, instructors will always tell you to hand over your money or run away where possible. martial arts are about discipline, respect, confidence, reflection. also, there are rare occasions where you might not have the opportunity to just hand over your wallet or run away. if martial arts were only about saving the contents of your wallet every once in a blue moon when you get mugged, they wouldn't still be practised all over the world :/

Here's an idea: Buy a gun.
helljumpr5150 2 weeks ago
Martial Arts are bullshit. At the end of the day, it's all about size and strength in a true real life fight. After having been in a few fights there is one thing I have learned. Fair fights are for pay-per-view. You use anything and everything around you to protect yourself. Beer bottles, sets of keys, rolls of nickels, chairs, knives, guns, literally anything. Worry about the consequences later
knothead89 2 weeks ago
@knothead89 Size and strength only get you so far in any fight. Try fighting
a high level full-contact martial artist who is smaller than you.
The idea behind that “size doesn’t matter” is an exaggeration from the highly skilled martial artist beating an untrained (and unarmed) bigger (and stronger) opponent. And also, you may not have the luxury of being able to find a random weapon (or be able to pull out one on you) while in the middle of a scuffle.

Oh yea and maybe a third is that i don't feel better while doing it, or even when i win. You better smoke some weed, get drunk, sniff some of that shit, or fuck a woman. Yes, better things to do.

Self-Defense= not bullshit.

Bigpussycat5 2 weeks ago
This particular show is really, really uninformed. I am a HUGE Penn and Teller fan. I am also a martial artist. Most of the people they chose to represent the MA community here are, in fact, wingnuts. Martial arts, aside from teaching you how to defend yourself from rapists and other psychopaths, also have the added benefit of being a great form of exercise and are a valid sport practiced around the world (not to mention the Olympics in two forms: Judo and Taekwondo).
BroJeetKune 3 weeks ago

LuluRosenkrantz 3 weeks ago
The episode is a bit misleading. What they're basically saying is that if you want to defend yourself from your every-day criminal, your best bet is to just give them your shit because it's a lot easier and you don't get in trouble etc. If you fight them then you risk hurting them and/or hurting yourself and have to go through court/possible jail time etc etc. Obviously if you just enjoy martial arts because you train to fight people in the ring it's a different story.

MaxGalactica418 3 weeks ago
@Pager1991 this comment is a bit mislead as they talk about self defense and they don't mention fighting for sport so obviously they're not talking about that in this episode. Penn & Teller made this for people who can put 2 & 2 together, that being one of them. Also it is strongly recommend not fighting back (in cases of theft/hostage) so to not put oneself in unnecessary danger, that's the main point, the rest Penn says while being true is still just playful banter and not the main
Sh1tDisturber 2 weeks ago
@Sh1tDisturber The thing is, any Martial Arts teacher worth their salt will say the exact same thing to you... Never fight when you don't have to. Only in situations where your life is in danger. A thief looking for money will, the vast majority of the time, simply run off after you give them what they want. But yea, there are a lot of crap instructors out there which is why I personally quit years ago. A good way to tell crap from quality, if you can gain a black belt in only a year... CRAP.

1. Save your money
2. Get a gun permit
3. Get a conceal carry lisences ( if possible)
4. Buy tons of ammo.

6. Store gun and ammo in a safe location.
7. No more steps needed you are a complete self defense badass.

@MrROTD I agree they're really putting this in a context of MA versus criminals and bangers. But if you get in a fight (versus another normally rational human being) at a bar MA could totally help. @TheJudoKevin So I guess you posted that without watching the 2nd half. ;)
vampirehunter42 1 month ago
@vampirehunter42 No, did you watch it? The first part says belts came from Okinawan Karate - they didn't. No martial art had belt ranking until Judo, which Kano introduced as it followed his pedagological background - progressively higher grading like a school. The second part does not address this long standing myth about belt ranking, despite the fact that it points out the sham that most MA belt systems are. That was the point of my post - the info was inaccurate.
TheJudoKevin 1 month ago
@TheJudoKevin Yep, and just a little bit into it they say just what you said. They allow the people to say the stupid stuff then bring in the real expert to correct them. And more or less said the belt system is BS. Remember the guy that was talking about the "belt system" was one of the idiots they were making fun of. So don't attack the show for showing the wrong information.

MrVincentR 1 month ago
I hold a black belt in Taekwondo. I have also been practicing MMA for about 3 years now. I can honestly say that pretty much most of the things that we learn within the school are not applicable to real life "fight" situations. It seems to be more of a sport these days than anything else. However, I do believe some of the things that were taught to myself and others provide at least a basis on "how" to fight. I feel that when my friends and I roughhouse, I definitely have an edge over them.
AsianWhiteWash 1 month ago
Before I watch this, I gots my opinion. I do this so I don't come out seeming biased. Martial arts is exactly what the name implies: Art. Some techniques are twisted, changed, and utilized in professional fighting. But as we all know, real "I hate you and I want you to die" fighting is nothing like sport fighting. Get locked up for a few weeks and you'll see what I'm talking about. Try to put that death eyed nazi in an arm bar and see how things turn out.

Lol, starting to contradict yourself now huh? Well at least you're starting to think logically with me that the open/empty hand fighting WAS not the reason that groups protected themselves. I would have to assume if that was the case, it was short lived, thus, only delaying the take over. I think weapons are great with tactics, but the better technology has more advantages, to say it doesnt is silly.
ericgustafson81 2 months ago
@ericgustafson81 I'm not starting to contradict myself. I am saying that MA aren't the sole reason for independence. They were created for survival and were used for this purpose, but cannot be given 100% credit for liberation. You cannot judge the effectiveness of a martial art by whether or not a group was liberated, but you can use the battles/ferocity of a group using martial arts to do so. What I said was that MA were used to defend people from oppression. Read carefully next time.
cooperon1229 2 months ago
@cooperon1229 Well yes, you can say MA was helped in defending people from oppression, but holy shit, so was eating that week, and getting sleep, etc. Please show me the effectiveness of MA and helping them defend another group off, and lets be honest, show me how the empty/open hand fighting helped, since thats what were really talking about here. , I've heard those fairy tales too by my instructors, but theres no evidence, just st
