Yes ducklings are cute, but then they grow up. I had a neighbor complain because they would end up going into their yard and poop every morning. I said, I have them in a fence, I can't stop them from flying over it and into their yard. I had a total of 23 over 5 years and a couple got killed by an owl and the rest flew away. They were a lot more work than the salesman initially told me but they were well worth it. I just hope they are all alive and have families of their own.
Well I live in the country, so our laws are different about owning water fowl than what they would be if we lived in a city. You'd have to check your local ordinances, but I'm pretty sure you should be able to.
but i have to say that the ONE of the mallards a female and the runt of all of my ducks went to the pekins when they were the same size, as her, and would pick off all two of the pekins fethers off thier wings to the skin, SO she was evicted out of the pen i had them in outside, and allowed tosee them, but not be apart of the gang, i would let her in but she bossed everyone around, about a week later she was broke from that, everyone including mallards would peck her back saying STOP, lol..
Thats really strange to me, 3 weeks after my buying the 5 mallards i had bought 3 pekins, they were always gettingjumped on in the pen, because they were not part of the group, SO i had taken a clear plastic sheet, divded them up, so they could co habitate together but not get with one another, i also put them in a Social and happy enviroment together for a short time, which was the bath tub, that was what got them to get alone better, and also today they are together and happy,
I bought my ducks already hatched, about 3 days old, mallards, i brought them home and took care of them for about another 3 days, then started taking them for walks, so the first thing they see is You thing might apply but i think its how much they see you is the biggest part of it, i always seen them about 5 times a day spending about 20 minutes with them each time or more, :)
Yeah that could be it too, but now my ducks are also fighting with each other. They end up in groups and once 3 males teamed up on this one female and they ended up killing her. Also I had 5 ducks attack this one male soo many times that he just flew away. Right now the 3 males ducks that killed the one female are working on this male and female I have, They attacked them soo many times that the male and female won't go in the backyard anymore. They stay in the front and side yard.
Just make sure you are the first thing they see when they hatch. If your not, then it won't work. Good luck, they are a lot of fun, but a lot of work as well.
