@Peekingduck Nikko is the 3rd largest "city" strictly in terms of area.
from Wikipedia;
"The post-merger city of Nikkō covers a large area (1,449.87 km²) of rural northwestern Tochigi. It is the third-largest city (by area) in Japan, behind Takayama and Hamamatsu."
For example, Nasu is now part of Nikko, so it's technically an attraction within Nikko.
The real "city" center is Imaichi, 9 km west tourist Nikko.
It's a fun fact to play with and debate and certainly makes for good conversation.
I have been here today for the first time! I lived it so much, and it was my first snow in Japan! I enjoyed so much! It must be one of the most interesting places on Earth! Thank you Japan!
I could say that there its everything magic yeah ..
I*m so in love with Japan - sad thing to be so far away from such a wonderful country hmmm my only hope its that maybe someday I will be able to go there and see all with my eyes -thank you for this amazing video - its like a trip in a world of magic
its just amazing -I cant find words to describe this beauty -for me Japan its a miracle - If I get there one day I will sit for hours to notice everything around because there are so many fascinating things - I could say that there its everything magic yeah ..
The song is called 'Mononoke Hime' from the album 'Leonard and his friends' (You can buy it from iTunes) and it is played by a genius by the name of Marco Lienhard.
It's the theme from 'mononoke hime' played by a man I think is a genius Marco Leonard. Part of the reason for this clip is to pay him some kind of tribute.
I visited Nikko in mid September 1974. Your video enhanced my memories and I am waiting the opportunity to be there once again in my life. This Japan is not disappering in my soul and will last forever. Domo Pekingduck san, somimasen, arigato gozaimashita!
I do believe everyone gets a culture shock (small or large) when settling. It is very different to Europe (USA?) and there isn't as much freedom to be an individual. But there are other rewards and adventures.
You have the same type of people in Japan as everywhere else i.e good ones and bad. But in general the Japanese are pretty friendly and very very honest.
Though the stereotype of the japanese person is a myth just as much as all stereotypes are.
It depends on what job you are looking for I guess.
The work-culture here is different. Most of the times we are told that japanese people work extremely hard. I don't think that is the case necessarily. They are at the office for many hours, but I think a guy at for example Toyota and a guy at Volvo have a totally different work structure.
Europe seems more sensibly organized a lot of the time.
Housing can be tricky... reluctancy to rent to foreigners etc is common, you'll need a guarantor.
Beautiful! I'm flying out to Japan next week and my mother has Nikko planned as one of our destinations. I wanted Disneyland, but I'm so glad she insisted on Nikko.
that song was playing also in Princess Mononoke. When Ashitaka left his village in search for answers. I remember it well. But it was more orchestral than just the Shakuhachi. nice vid by the way. such a peaceful place indeed.^_^
yea i really did. I admire Japan so much. I wanna go there soo bad. I envy you.-_-*sigh* hope i can visit there someday.and yayyy i was right tehe. i knew it was from Mononoke. When i heard this in the movie. I was so moved i shed a tear. I always hum.when it plays. such a beautiful piece.

I agree with Kusanagijoy and am ready to make my pilgrimage to Nikko. What a wonderful video! I like that you included the ambient sounds of each clip along with the music though I also like your other videos where music alone is used. You seem to have a good sense of which approach works best. While watching your videos the term "video photography" comes to mind as each shot has the quality of a fine photograph. I hope that this makes sense as it is a rare and special talent you have. -Kurt :-)

Sorry to hear that. Right now is peak season for people that want to see the koyo.
I went of the beaten path on a rainy day and at a later hour than most tourists would like to.
To me, Nikko is more relaxing and beautiful that way.
