@bestamerica It's the name of a coastcity in England, Great Britain in Europe, the other part of the world, in the neighbourhood of Ireland, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and many, many other countries.
The other issue regarding modernising the system is the current vintage trams as a tourist attraction. The blackpool tramway is an attraction in its own right, it is a traditional tramway not a light rail system and was never ment to operate as such. what sort of speeds will the new vehicles operate at ?and will they be reliable in such a harsh environment? These 70 year old trams still operate in blackpool for a reason because they work and if it aint broken then dont fix it.
I dont totally understand blackpools plans to upgrade to a light rail system. This is a massive amount of money being spent on an existing tramway that never made any money though the winter. Unless blackpool are considering re opening inland routes and extending to Squires gate there will be no increase in passenger numbers to the system. I am begining to think this modernisation has not been thought threw and my become an expensive white elephant.
I was in Blackpool during the illuminations this year, and I noticed starr gate hade no track, are they going to all stop at pleasure beach in future?
Also why is it that they don't use all of there trams anymore. I think they would want to make as much money as possible and put a lot more trams on during illuminations period, because the time table says every 10 mins, but I had to wait 40, Becvause of the huge que and there not being many on.
I heard about the delays - its said that the transport operator let the passengers down, although not knowing all the facts I can only speculate about this.
Anyway, the system is now being rebuilt and in typical railway fashion the works (especially in Fleetwood) are going to take simply ages, with passengers forced to use alternative services.
But its not just Blackpool - theres the Oldham route in Manchetser & in London the East & North London lines plus the Underground.
Oh Thats good, A Modern tramway, just hope they continue the double decker trans, they are one of the only tramways in the world to use double decker trams!
You know the new ones they have ordered are they double deckers, single deckers or both? will they run alongside the old ones too! or are they getting rid of the old classic fleet?(hope not).
Thanks for replying to my message, do you work at blackpool transport(metro)???
The new trams will be single deckers, fully accessible, etc.
Some of the older trams will be kept for 'heritage' operation along part of the system. Alas they will not use the street trackage in Fleetwood - well thats the idea, maybe though that will change, after a while (I hope so)!
btw, I live in London - my info comes from various yahoo groups about trams.
oh no, the double beckers are going to be gone. So If they are going to use more of these single deckers, then I hope they alter the timetable as even te double deckers get busy at times, the new single ones are going to be smaller I think, (unless like nottinghams) then it will be even busier.
Earlier this month (May 2009) a contract was signed for a fleet of brand new low floor trams.
I just hope that this will all come to pass - Blackpool is an Atlantic Ocean coastal location, and with much of the tramway right on the seafront rising sea levels and more (tsunami?) might soon become issues.
Our idiotic government offers pensioners free travel on buses but NOT trams, which I believe has had an impact on usage in Blackpool. The government's vision for the future of public transport seems to be the diesel bus!
alas it IS the diesel bus, because otherwise the treasury would loose too much money from people not paying motoring taxes and instead travelling by tram.
You are right about the pensioners, as they have to use a diesel bus which shadows the entire tram route. This DOES harm the tramway.
I have a well paid job in public health, but why do I want to be a tram driver in Blackpool, or even a conductor? I would love it! Gizza job, I can do that!
We have been to Blackpool some years ago and we will never forget it. It is a lovely place. We wish we could go there again...

All these are suffering closures (often extended) in the name of 'making things better for passengers'.

I worked on the toast rack, you got an awful electric shock everytime you pressed the bell when it was raining. Nice memories.

Geez, that vehicle needs re-wiring!
Not good, not all all.
Isn't there an earth leakage test carried out on them? Or is that only for trolleybuses.
