  • The Atari 800 is the TRUE predecessor of the Amiga, NOT the C64, as Jay Miner developed both machines.

    There's no fucking reason why the Atari could not pull off a version of "Desert Dream", if the same principles are in use by Jay the Genius when he created them.

  • This is sooo increadible! Cosider i have programmed in assembler for alot of years i can't even in my wildest fantasies imagin how they did this. Big credit to the smartest programmers ever for achieveing this.

  • PCs are RAM and hard drive hogs. Something like a mouse driver takes up more RAM than old machines even had available. Old school computers knew how to do things efficiently...

  • Yeah, and the old coders aswell... :) There are some efiicient stuffs still nowadays, but the new coders haven't the ability to code anything with only kbytes of ram.... those fuckn bastards ;)

  • Yeah that's right, but don't forget today's RAM and CPU hogs have their advantages, too. It's now easier and more intuitive to program them and code can easier run on multiple platforms. In the C64, Amiga and Atari times you only had to program for one particular chipset which was well known. It was not uncommon that a game/demo only ran on exactly 1 or 2 configurations of computer.

  • Think of the many Amiga games programmed to efficiently use the A500's hardware, where often undocumented tricks and chipset bugs were used to achieve that little extra speedup/effect. They then didn't run correctly on the A1200 or even if you upgraded your OS in your A500 from V1.3 to V2.0. So I nowadays prefer the "hogs" and can be relatively sure they will still run on my new computer.

  • Thats the great thing about demos on lower end machines. The coders prove the impossible IS possible. By cheating big-style, also without these "tricks" game coders (of quite a few I know) wouldn't be able to do some of the effects they tried for years to do in real-time withou cheating..

  • Insane this is possible on a machine with only 64Kb of memory....

  • well, let's be honest without the disc gradually loading, it wouldn't be the same, BUT the fact that people found out that the machine can be tricked and play something while loading is incredible and that changed the whole demo scene forever!

  • Impressive achievement, make no mistake. I enjoy it when programmers test their mettle by pushing a system to it's absolute limits, which was no doubt what had to be done to downscale the Desert Dream while keeping it entertaining.

    The only recent example I can think of that is similar would be the XBMC project for the XBOX. The damn thing can just about decode H.264 videos with a mere 733mhz Celeron and 64mb of RAM! How's that for getting the most out of such a simple machine?

  • Heh. I've seen the original Amiga one a hundred times and I still wonder what that was. My hunch was that it was buried somewhere in the non-standard bootblock, or better still you'd have to figure out how to mount the custom disk format to find an info file.

    Perhaps someone more code savvy could reveal if there WAS a secret, or if it was just a tease created by Laxity!

  • I thought the original demo was awesome, its all the more impressive that it has been squeezed onto a C64... Its amazing what you can actually do on these 8-bit machines. Now do it on a Vic-20!!!

    the comparison must be done with the C64 3D games like 3DPool.

    Obvious that the Amiga version was better.

  • sure the amiga version was better, but doing this on c64 is 10x harder than on an amiga, and thats the point: showing that it can be done. when the amiga version of this came out, this demo for the c64 was tought i m p o s s i b l e.

  • never make the mistake of believing the 'limit' has been reached on the c64. Ive heard it at least a dozen times since 1990 and every time someone has soon smashed the limit.....

  • I've got to say - I had no idea. AMAZING. I love the original but this is way beyond what I thought a humble C64 could accomplish.

  • How that thing at 0.38 is made :o. Looks just like 3D but it's not possible with c64.

  • You wouldn't be able to efficiently calculate 3D the same way you can with today's machines. That's why shortcuts were employed. In fact, no "3D" calc might even be taking place at that time :) Optical illusions FTW!
