freni would have been the best butterfly if she would have sung it onstage.. there is only one recording from the met live of the last act.. she wouldn't sing it onstage normally becase it was too taxking for the voice..
one of my favorite things in this recording is that as she is trying to read the name of the ship you can almost hear her hands shaking - and then her absolute abandon with no hint of strain on all the high notes... one understands why Von Karjan wanted to hear her sing the role of Tourandot rather than Lui
her voice is perfect. her sweetness is able to touch the soul of us listeners, expecially in the climax of desperation, when she sings to her child "va, giuoca, giuca". touchable desperation. total.
That was not very eloquent language... Does not witness of integrity the least. "fuck off" does not belong in a comment if you want to be taken serious. Butterfly is not meant to be sharp, that's the first, all the spinto's of Puccini is meant to have a round dark timbre. Freni sounds great here, but to say that noone else is better is completely ridiculous. Somone who's perfect for you is not necessarily perfect for others and the other way around. You have to learn that here on youtube...
Don´t get me wrong, I know Butterfly is meant to have a darker timbre. And I never said there is no one better than Freni, in fact I´ve heard better than her, but even though, her recordings of this role are some of my favorite. I know not everybody thinks as I do, I´m just giving my opinion as you are doing too. If you dont like what I say then just ignore it.
@MademoiselleGore My Mother wanted me to be a opera singer to the point when she was pregnant with me in 1952, she would play opera records, to influence her baby , not knowing if I was was Boy or girl. Well, I cannot sing but have a great sense of music and dance. If I could SING ONE HALF As WEll as Freni. My mother would really be happy, in heaven. M. Freni you sing like a goddess!
@molarmama5 haha that's hilarious, my brother who's a blues musician would play pop music when I was in mother's belly to turn me into a musician and I turned out to be an opera singer!!
Verónica Villarroel is one of the finest sigers around now a days. She was the first foreign soprano to sing Butterfly in the New National Theater de Tokio, in Japan, and she remains one of today's best interpreters of Puccini.
And for your information, Mirella Freni never sang Madama Butterfly on stage. Aside from her recordings, she only shot a movie of the opera with Placido Domingo, directed by Jean-Pierre Ponelle. I love Mirella Freni, but she is not the one in the picture.
According to you Villaroel is one of the finest singers- but then that has to be defined against a certain criteria, which you obviously are not familiar with. Most of us who are familiar with really fine singing don't share your view. She shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Freni, but I had no choice. I know Mirella Freni NEVER sang Butterly on stage, and I own the movie. As far as I am concerned, she was the greatest Butterly, on recording, off the stage, she's it.
Of course you're Chilean, that might just be your criteria for your admiration of Miss Santiago. Chileans - notoriously arrogant, and jealous of any other South American singers who surpass their own. Sorry, that was off the topic, but I just had to add it in.
Mirella Freni is the best Butterfly ever. You are complete right on that. And one of the greatest puccini sopranos, next to Callas, Tebaldi, Caballe and Scotto. I am in no way comparing her to Miss Villarroel. I'm simply saying that in my humble opinion, she is one of the best now a days, and makes a beautiful Cio-Cio San.
As for your racist remarks, I have to say: First of all, I'm currently living in Chile, but I'm not chilean. Beautiful country, filled with great talent. And there is a great admiration for other South American singers here, such as Juan Diego Florez, Carmiña Gallo, Aquiles Machado, Fabiana Bravo and Marcelo Alvarez....

I agree that Villaroel is not top of the pops to put it that way. I have heard alot from her and I find her quite nasal most of the time. In the Covent Garden production of Il Trovatore, with José Cura, Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Yvonne Naef in the cast, Villaroel singing Leonora obviously I must admit I am sorry that she was the soprano, the others sang great, but Villaroel ruined the whole first act by sounding like an old tired lady. I'm sorry to say. Very steely and too much scooping...

Some people say that Freni isn´t the ¨perfect¨ Butterfly, well they can all fuck off!
She has the voice of a goddess!! and so she is a great interpreter!
I´ve heard many voices that are told to be the right voice for the role but they dont have the sharp notes Freni has!

Uh, it's Mirella Freni, one of the greatest soprano and interpreters of Puccini. Verconica Villaroel?? Who even cares who that is.
