I think of all of Mann's "cop/criminal" movies, Heat is obviously, by far the best. I would say Thief is a little better than Collateral, just liked the storyline more in Thief. Miami Vice was so so.
there was something very raw about heat that made u feel like this is really how it is, slightly less so in collateral but that movie was so fuckin' deep it made up 4 it. but i found miami vice 2 be fake, idk y but i just didn't buy it there were so many problems with the operational structure of the cops & the criminals that it just wasn't believable.
"there great films!" - is this "irish" or how would call that? i know that many males between 10-30 adore his movies. but that still doesn't change my opinion that all of his movies except heat are crap. in fact it's another proof that his movies are indeed bullshit. and last mohicans? seriously? this movie is so fucking lame that you fall asleep. and i'm a huge fan of daniel day-lewis.
I'd say Heat is about my favorite. What are your guys' favorites? Alot of people didn't think Miami Vice was that good. I thought it was a great movie. Haven't seen Public Enemies yet.
Michael Mann, by far, has put out some of the most hard core, legit, gangster films, HEAT being the best. His movies make you feel VS. having to explain the life of his characters. Pure genius. Michael, if you're reading this...know that your action is the best! Simply the best! Best line in Miami Vice: "In this business I do not buy a service, I buy a result. If you say you're going to do a thing, you must do, exactly, that thing." Next best: "Oh yeah, ...I'm a disco guy" !!
Not only Michael Mann is a wonderful filmmaker, not only these three movies are his best, not only he has an unnate quality to make incredible moving endings, but you have put all that in this simple video. I applaud you.
Fantastic piece of work here Dante, Extreme Ways now officially resonates with me as a Mann soundtrack over the Bourne films. Any plans to update it with Public Enemies when it comes to Blue Ray or you just going to leave this aura alone with these three films as it is?
The nicest compliment anyone could give this video is the association of Extreme Ways with Michael Mann, rather than Bourne. Means I did something right! Thanks.
I think I'll leave this as is. Got a couple projects up my sleeve. One should be done soon. The other could take years...
you have forgot the one that starts it all - Thief with James Caan and Belushi there is actually a comment in Heat regarding Thief - when De Niro getting info about Pacino Voigt is telling him that he got Jimmys crew in Chicago, which was name and place of Caans crew in Thief
Public Enemies looks good but its his next proyect im really looking forward to. The Winter of Frankie Machine. Look it up and then youll know what im talking about. And De Niro is slated to portray Frankie.
Michael Mann's films stick with you long after you have watched them. All of his film's are Haunting, Atmospheric, and feel like you are there. Mr. Mann is a Born Filmmaker, like Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg, they know how to entertain and give you movies like no other, especially the music picked for each film....PERFECT. THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS
I feel like alot of people forget the insider which, in terms of oscar noms, was his most successful film. Although im not saying that the oscars are a measure of success. I still think Heat is his undisputed masterpeice
people miss the point on MV. it's a cold lonely world and he portrays it brilliantly. even the glamour (planes, beaches, top designer suits, night clubs, ferraris) looses it's glow as they have other things on their minds. brilliant. I saw it twice in the theaters. this movie is cold as ice and he portrays the void so brilliantly like everyone in the drug world is possessed and they are good guys trying to fight for whatever soul they have left in that dark world.
ur right the movie more closely resembled the later seasons of miami vice when the plot and mood got dark and gloomy and film-noir-style. I just thought it should have been more like the first season with a coked up, eccentric, environment with brightly colored pastel suits and flashy testarosas
MANN hands down the best director his chocie of film, music and actors is unbelivable i dont just love the moments with talking and action but the moments where there is nothing but silent emotion the actors say more in them moments then in the whole film for me the best dirctor ever. i love the grain effect that mann puts on all of his films top bloke
Fantastic tribute! Michael Mann is one of my favorite directors, and i love these three movies, well Miami Vice was good but not as good as Heat or Collateral.
This completely heartbreaking line from Collateral:
"Hey Max, guy gets on the MTA, dies. Think anybody will notice?"
It perfectly encapsulates the deeply complex relationship (friendship even) between Max and Vincent. It adds another layer to Vincent's character that suggests he might not be such a sociopath after all if he is worried about society noticing him. And finally, it totally summarizes the tone and events of the film we have just watched. All in about 12 words. Amazing.
Quality video and quality song, love this song in heat really sets the the final scene. Out the three tho collateral is my favourite, i love heat and miami vice is alrite but the performances of cruise and foxx are top notch. Awesome film kept me gripped from start to finish.
I felt Thief was too obscure and unknown, and Last of the Mohicans would have been too jarring and thematically irrelevant. As the title says, this video is about CRIME in MANN films.

Is this just because he says, "I got a brother somewhere?" If so, I have to strongly disagree. That has nothing to do in my view with the relationship between Vincent and Neil.

This reminds me of when my cousin and I saw Jurassic park, which came out 2 years before this. We were six then. He was convinced that Nedry was Hammond's some because he said "You know you're right, Dad. Everything's my problem." He hadn't learned what sarcasm meant yet. lol
As I said earlier, there's not really much evidence to support the theory, nor is there much to reject it.
Most of all, I would point to the fact that Heat and Collateral are, in my opinion, sister stories. As such, it's not out of the question that there might be some overlap or interconnectivity with the characters.

Michael Mann is one of hollywoods finest directors I cant wait for Manns next film about the dillinger gang. "Is mr. Blue dead?" Response "Dead as Dillinger" The Reservoir Dogs.
Yeah, Miami Vice would have worked better under a different name with different characters. Like, a separate crime film on its own not connected to the 80's series.
I think the scene early in Miami Vice where the two undercover agents get shot to hell in the front seat of their car . . . I think that's the most violent scene of any Mann film. Not buckets of blood. Just damn violent. Great movies, and I like MV better than Collateral.
He really has an eye for color and cool-factor villains. Tom Cruise as Vincent was one of the best I have ever seen. The fight scenes were also notable for their realism and noise.
I left a comment some months ago! I can relate to some of the other viewers about watching this piece several times if not every week! Masterful job on this! You've got mad skills! I'd write more, but I want to watch this again!
It is not my nature to gush, but I return to this mash up again and again because it is utterly propulsive. The editing has been synced wonderfully to extreme ways, and the crosscutting between different methods of travels (boats, Cruise in the taxi, DeNiro's crew shooting out of the limo) is breathtaking. This has completely inspired me to do my own mashup. Absolutely fantastic!
Michael Mann is a born filmmaker. All of his movies have an atmosphere about them that you feel. The music he choses for his films fit almost perfectly. MIAMI VICE was an underrated classic. He brings a realism to each of his films that cannot be matched. Wonderful tribute video.
i became a fan of his movies at about 15. i am now 25. pound 4 pound, line 4 line, scene 4scene HEAT is the definitive Micheal Mann Movie. Now, 4 everyone who says MV sucked, i won't be too hard on u because ur obviously fans of Mann, however, a true fan would appreciate MV and Collateral for exactly what he says they r, an instant in the lives of these people. it was a 2 hr episode of an updated miami vice show nothing profound.a drop in the bucket. u can't begin imagine the back story he wrote
sweet lord miami vice sucked. sorry to harsh your vibe, but i have to say that whenever michael mann comes up. next montage, replace vice with scenes from the insider..or ali.
transformers collateral was also a masterpiece. i loved mv too. the reason why is taht i love cop shit and all that grittiness. mann is a God, hes 3 new movies taht hews directing are going to be up there with heat and collateral
"Heat" is a masterpiece. "Collateral" is good, but nothing special. "Miami Vice" sucked balls. I hope Michael Mann can bounce back, and create another great film. Because he hasn't done anything great, since "The Insider." :(

this is one epic video

He really has an eye for color and cool-factor villains. Tom Cruise as Vincent was one of the best I have ever seen. The fight scenes were also notable for their realism and noise.

I left a comment some months ago! I can relate to some of the other viewers about watching this piece several times if not every week! Masterful job on this! You've got mad skills! I'd write more, but I want to watch this again!

Quite simply......breathtaking.
So much passion has gone into this video. I've lost count how many times i've seen these movies. Michael Mann is a god.
I'd be serving this video a severe injustice if i rated it below 5 stars. 5* for sure.

Mann is a genius when it comes to urban crime drama. 5 stars.

Superb. 5 Stars+. Have to agree this one is one of the best montages I have ever seen.

once extreme ways takes over, it hooks. Well done - not enough Mann fans out there.

MrYoungDad83 3 years ago 3
Awesome, Mann is the Man for sure. Loved it, 5 stars.

sweet lord miami vice sucked. sorry to harsh your vibe, but i have to say that whenever michael mann comes up. next montage, replace vice with scenes from the insider..or ali.

As far as Michael Mann montages go, this one is one of the best I have ever seen. Nice work.
michaellee213 4 years ago 3
"Heat" is a masterpiece. "Collateral" is good, but nothing special. "Miami Vice" sucked balls. I hope Michael Mann can bounce back, and create another great film. Because he hasn't done anything great, since "The Insider." :(
