the part about education Joe's bringing up is kinda similar to the Trivium that his buddy Jan Irwin talks about, excluding the discipline though. I will say the best way for mental and physical self-reliance to be taught is obviously from experience- that's why i suggest you check out John Taylor Gatto's work (an award winning teacher from NY) he would actually take kids out of the school to learn and give them tasks by themselves in public, which is a great way to start self-reliance.
