The alternative explanation is that girls enjoy being circumcised and women find that the procedure enhances their marriages. So maybe Western feminists should butt out and let the women of Africa enjoy this noble tradition.

I ask because, as this video demonstrates, most women in the countries where female circumcision is commonplace are enthusiastic supporters of the custom. But I agree with you re the West, the benefits of circumcision are universal and not limited to one gender, so Western women should support it for themselves also.

The one thing that stands out here in this video is that education of normal human physiology seems to be missing. You can't blame a parent who makes a bad decision when they really don't know it is a bad decision. Education is the real key.

One CAN blame the medical profession, since they should teach these functions in medical school, but don't, so MDs don't have the info to educate parents. Studies of parental decision-making show that even when MDs explain this, parental emotions resist education. Nevertheless, the medical code of ethics should guide MDs to refuse genital cutting.
