  • her bars routine was amazing!!!!

  • today I did for the first time a full twisting double back, i work really hard for it!

but now i realize how hard mukhina must have worked for it in in 1987, she does it on a floor as hard as stone!

Mukhina, you were the only one who was beter than Nadia.

    Rest In Peace.

  • Amazing.

  • poor mukhina, may she rest in peace.

  • soviet athletes were sports machines then

  • 3:45 to 3:49 was terrifying. @_@

  • That has got to be one of the scariest uneven bars routine ever! I swear back then they would put the most dangerous routines ever O.O

  • she had a new skill in every apparatus

  • whoa girls were doing full-ins back then?!

  • The uneven bar routines were so much better back then

  • @Lisamaneesa

They would be as good today as they were back then but rules were put in place to protect the gymnasts.

  • @wadwadthenugget

I agree. It's all about power now. The gymnasts from the Eastern Bloc at this time had such catlike grace and elegance. May not have been so fast as now but it had something else.

  • She was so fabulous but why did she keep hitting the lower bar after she wraps around it?

  • remember watching her...so inspirational...such an amazing talent!

  • @wadwadthenugget Shawn is awesome. She has her own style. Do you see her landings? That, my friend, is pure gracefulness.

  • Maybe not the greatest, but some of her skills were way ahead of time.......wonderful champion. Very graceful, not like nowaday gymnasts which are very robotic and boaring along with the rules.

  • It was sad when she died she was amazing!

    Rest in Peace.

  • She was better than Nadia!

  • R.I.P..my angel your FX and UB executions are still the best to me

  • but it was the mens coach that wanted her to try a thomas salto

  • Wow.. I remember when I did gymnastics (when I was younger) I couldn't even get up onto the beam never mind doing what she did! amazing sport, so graceful!

  • that bar routine was...wow. phenominal.

  • @ffalcons102 If gymnasts nowadays would do routines like that, then I'd watch them more instead of looking for gymnasts from the 70s.

  • I read she was coached by a men's coach, that is why she took it to the next level

  • till 6:28 it is great but why did you ad the last part?

  • wow was there no spring in the floor back then, it almost looks like she did that full twisting double back on a solid ground, absolutely amazing!

  • @matthewxcountry nope, there wasn't any springs on the floor back then.

  • my favorite part of her floor is from 0:40 to 0:50

  • Beautiful Elena:( You were one of a kind; too good to live for long in this world:( RIP Angel.

  • @wadwadthenugget For some reason, Shawn Johnson reminds me of a clydesdale. Good gymnast...but dear lord...

  • @MiniYoda22 Dawes reminds me of a damn canal horse on beam. CA-CLOMP! CA-CLOMP! CA-CLOMP! CA-CLOMP! Elena was light and feathery and absolutely beautiful. (Shawn's not in the class of either of the two I mentioned.) All my opinions. God didn't tell me all this.

  • @beautifulsarah100 I didn't remember Dawes' performance on beam, so I went and check it out and I totally agree. That's part of the reason I like watching these older vids; there's a grace that is fairly absent today.

  • @MiniYoda22 Clydesdale, lol!!!! XD True that though;)

  • check out that aerial Onodi at :32! gorgeous.

  • @wadwadthenugget you don't have to just peg it on one gymnast xD she's still going to be one of the best in the world when it was her time. haa-dur.

  • she looks terrible when she s preparing for her vault

    so tired and overworked

    sad

  • Which move was it that caused the most injuries back then on bars? Was it the one where they hit the bar with their stomach? Or those big releases like the one Olga Korbutt did first when she stood on the top bar and then somersaulted to catch?

  • She went beyond his time, because she carried on the techincal level of the Gymnastic of 70's. Her beam was simply easy and perfect.

  • @wadwadthenugget i so agree! watching olga, nadia and elena made me appreciate gymnastics more than watching today's gymnasts. Today's gymnasts are technically great but lacking in artistry, fluidity and grace.

  • I actually find her more enjoyable to watch than Nadia or Olga.

  • This is my ideal of what women's gymnastics should look like- she's not too thin, strong and flexible, and a tasteful cut on the leotard as well:)

  • this was only 2ys ahead of nadia which means she had already been training these moves duing the time when nadia performed at the 1976 olympics.. had she borned earlier and performed like this in the 1976 olympics people would probably not remember nadia as much coz she did tricks that were way much harder..!

  • @Swankdor that can be said about anyone. the next generation is always better, duh. point is, nadia was the best, besides mukina was old enough for Montreal?!

  • @suegirl145 she is A YEAR OLDER than nadia.. get ur facts right bitch..!!

  • The performance of Mukhina is really splendid even if I look now. Your performance is elegant beautifully powerfully. A shock impression when I began it and watched Mukhina revived in those days. Thank you for showing a splendid performance for a short period. You are a champion eternally. Please sleep peacefully.

  • The Russian choreography in 70s and 80was just beautiful. And for those who don't know, that's how you land a full-in!

  • Could she have been the greatest if she hadn't had the accident?

  • @ChickenGoujons Yes!

  • @ChickenGoujons I ask myself the same, she looked better than nadia in some ways.

  • Какого человека потеряли.

  • not great form on the vault, especially for that time, but nevertheless, an exsquisite gymnast.

    r.i.p

  • rest in peace-- you were a gift to all of us

  • she stood out as the best of her time. I'm old enough to remember sitting in the crowd in 1976 in tucson, watching Nadia. So I remember Mukhina!

  • Her difficulty for this time was just amazing. It still blows me away to this day. One of the greatest champions of all times!

  • Coaches are idiots, he made her quadriplegic, that must have been so bad for her, at least she adapted...it just sucks. :( :( :(

  • It really is too bad that coaches are idiots sometimes, (I know mine are), how bad would it stink to be quadriplegic? Especially after being a gymnast, that guy was an idiot....Oh my gosh. :( :( :(

  • What is that called at 3:48 when she stands up on the bar then jumps off? I've never seen anyone do that before. It's amazing.

  • It's called the Korbut Flip, except that Mukhina added a full twist to it. :) It's an illegal move now though. :(

  • That's called a Korbut Flip (I think)--Olga Korbut first made it famous in the '72 Olympics, then Mukhina added a full twist in the clip above. The move is banned now; it's considered too dangerous. It is pretty spectacular. When Korbut first did it, the ABC commentators were absolutely flabbergasted, you should watch the footage sometime.

  • its a variation of the korbut flip, done by Olga Korbut in 1972

  • she really was the epitome of a gymnast. and i'm so sorry that coaches are that stupid sometimes :( she will never ever be forgotten!

  • She is on my list of great soviet gymnasts that I am so sad never was seen in an olympics, along with Mostepanova,Dudnik and Groshkova.

  • Just putting a question out there for people to comment on: If she would have made it to the Olympics what medals do you think she would have got? I think she would have taken a silver or gold AA, a gold on bars, possible a gold on floor and maybe a silver on beam?

  • I definitely think she would have been overall champion, and I agree with gold on bars and floor. She was a beautiful gymnast in every way. I always feel so sad when I watch her, thinking about what happened to her. She was so pretty and feminine in her choreography. Just heartbreaking(

  • I know, it really is heartbreaking =( I said AA silver because even though her moves where very difficult she tended to have a bit of leg separation.

  • I also think she would have been a great change to the Olympics. She introduced so much new difficulty like her full twisting korbut flip and her bars dismount along with a full twisting double back and a Thomas salto on floor. Although I believe Yelena Davydova also performed a thomas salto, I give her much deserved props for trying such a difficult move. Also I do not know if you know this but at this time was taped floor music aloud or is she using live piano music?

  • They almost always used live piano music at the time; but I do not know in this case - it sounds live.

  • One sec... who (on the board) is Johnson from USA? Shawn johnson was probably not even born yet when this happened. I certainly wasn't. I love Shawn, though.

  • Kathy Johnson.

  • ahh... what ended up happening to her?

  • Thanks for up loading the video, she was a superb gymnast.

  • which tumbling pass was her salto? 1st or second?

  • I don't think there was a salto in it... it was a new tumble pass she was working on. The salto is when you do, like, a full twist in the air and land on your hands, rolling out.

    Such a sad story :(

  • Yeah, thats actually what I thought. Isn't that move like banned now or something??

  • ya... here is what it looks like. search "Banned skill -- thomas full" and it is the first thing that pops up. read the description box.

  • She was trying a thomas salto, its a 1 3/4 flip with 1 1/2 twist and you roll out of it.And it is now banned

  • It is banned for women, men still compete it. The Thomas with 2 and a half twists however, is also banned for men.

  • and the 2 1/2 twist with a roll out SHOULD be banned its really dangerous.

  • thank you so much for the video

    she'll never be forgotten

  • so sad... she could of been the next nadia- but never got her olympic chance to shine

  • i wish does kinds of bar and balance beam routines were done today..why arent thet=y the same as before did these moves get banned

  • You're right-now we dont focus as much on grace, as we do skill level of the tricks. However Nastia Liukin is one of the most graceful post 1996 olympic gymnasts that I have ever seen. Shawn has her own way of competing, which is to throw hard skills, and go as fast and as hard as she can. Not necessairly not graceful, but she's more of a powerhouse.

  • Check it,at 1:35,on board it writes Kraker.Check also Krakers one footed twist. Its awesome.

  • but, there's difficulties in it..... lol. i agree with the gracefulness though. lol

  • I wish they bring back the Korbut Flip. That skill is awesome!

  • but the bars are far from each other now.... i wish the same thing too. lol

  • It really doesn't have anything to do with the bars being farther apart. You're just not allowed to stand on the high bar.

  • really? is it banned? why though?

  • The move involves standing on the high bar, which is illegal by the Code Of Points. It's a shame.

  • Thanks so much for posting this

  • Right before she takes her second tumbling pass on floor the board behind her reads "USA JOHNSON." It's a little eerie!

    Wonderful video, by the way.

  • Shawn Johnson is awesome. LOL! But her name would be at the top though.

  • Why would it be?

  • With all the Shawn Johnson we've been seeing lately I guess it was just kind of weird to watch a video this old and see her last name pop up.

  • On her first tumbling pass when she lands and does that gymnast pose after she lands at 0:16, I think Kim Zmeskal did the same pose.

  • This is the first time I heard of her!

    Woah~

OMG I feel sad that she left us. ):

  • I cannnot believe that she stands up on the high uneven bar and then she does a big flip and manages to still grab on to the bar.. I have never seen any other gymnast in the world do that move..

  • that's because its banned now

  • That Uneven bars rountine....WHOO! Loved the dismount.

  • wow, she was really impressive! her floor routine was like watching an ice skater, except on the floor (which i read she did learn figure skating). her beam had some ballet elements too. but she also had the athleticism too (the bars were crazy!)... good all around athlete. i had never heard of her until now, but it is truly sad what happened!

  • Does anybody know the name of that vault on uneven bars when she is on taller bar and give a vault for back? Anyone else did this vault? thks. r.i.p yelena. We will always love you.

  • do you mean the release from the top bar? it's a full twisting korbut.

  • It is on 3'47s. I thought it was a comaneci. I've never seen any gynnastic do this vault. thks. and you?

  • Orga Korbut did it first in 72 olympics, but without the full twist, Mukhina was the first to do Korbut with a full twist.

  • Is a forbidden move right now, because now it is forbidden to stand on the bars, (am I right ?)

But it's a full twisting korbut. lovely move. I only know mukhina and korbut did that move

  • It's called the Korbut Flip. Orga Korbut first did it at the 72' Olympic Games. and Mukhina added the twist to it.

But this move is not performed anymore since you're not allowed to stand on the bars.

The Korbut flip is still performed on the beam thought.

  • I remember I read in somewhere else that she said her coach was very nice to her but she used to take his words very seriously even if she wasn't ready for the challenge... too bad, that was what happened according to the interview.

  • she later was interviewed and she said that what her coach said was false and she was pressured into competing the technique (Thomas Salto).

  • She was fantastic. I remember her accident and the lack of information/cover up at the time. Saw her interviewed in her grandmother's flat about 15 years ago and she was quite understably bitter about what happened. She knew her leg wasn't right but she was pushed back into full training and for what? A broken neck and an early death. I cried when I found she had died. She was one of the greats.

  • i read an interview of hers and she said she wanted to stop training but her coaches wouldnt let her

  • This is so horrible. To think that she never knew what was coming. Tragic. Beautiful gymnast

  • yes she was so pretty. i wonder what could have been of her if she would have kept on?..she probably would have kept on winning more medals and would have been more famous than Nadia.

  • her work on bars was amazing. u jst dont see that anymore nowadays, not even from the likes of liukin and the chinese beam workers who r revered all around the world

  • It would be impossible to do a routine like that today. The bars are now placed too far apart to allow some of those moves.

  • a beautiful tragedy of the ussr...R.I.P its so sad i cant believe wot i read in her interview

  • How tall was she??

  • I think that she was about 5' 1" That is about the height of Anna Pavlova. Yelena was so pretty.

  • its sad 2 think that a year later from this competiton she got paralized!

  • it's so nice to see this! I love Gymnastics Greatest Stars, but it always frustrated me that I couldn't watch the entire routines.

  • the routines look so beautiful...R.I.P

  • She was so strong and powerful, and had extremely difficult elements in her routines, yet she had the balletic grace of the classic Soviet gymnast-she was so beautiful to watch. One of my favourite parts of her beam routine is the simple turn she makes at the end of the beam just before she does her round-off-she does it with such finesse and poise; something so simple, yet so effective.

  • she did such nice gymnastics! so pretty so difficult and she rly wuz strong on all 4 events she will always b remembered!

Rest In Peace we will all remember u!

  • Beautiful gymnast and her routines were perfect.. Rest In Peace

  • I love her. She's so inspirational. R.I.P. :'[

  • amazing!! her bars were just fantastic!!! an amazing gymnast..R.I.P

  • the bars are just incredible!

  • i love that uneven bars routine..especially the discount.

  • her body moves so smoothlly

  • What a gymnast....geez! I'm in awe watching her. Shes SO elegant. She would have ripped Davydova a new one at the '80 Olympics had she been healthy. Saddest story in all of gymnastics to me.

  • She's gone,but never forgotten

  • Thanks, I loved it! She was a monster on the bars! We don't see it anymore ;/ Rest in peace, Mukhina.

  • That bar set was INSANE! Jeesh

  • R.I.P.

  • rest in peace .. mukhina

  • Wow. So sad that she passed away.

  • Isn't this the same, or part of the same floor music used by Olga Korbut in the 1976 Olympic floor routine, in her rather lack lustre exercise?

  • yes i think so but all the music sounds the same from a piano so not sure!

  • Olga Korbuts 1976 floor music was "Milord", a song made famous by Edith Piaf.

  • oh my god, i had not seen this video since 1978 i was 11 and she was my idol. thank you for posting this it's a grat tribute, very moving

  • yes she was a real superstar, this was an itv recording from the worlds-glad you like it.

  • What apparatus did she start on?

  • A great gymnast, pushed too far. The accident she sustained on floor was tragic, I just discovered she died on Dec 22 2006.

    Elena Mukhina, June 1 1960-Dec 22 2006, RIP.

  • Thank you for this lovely video.

  • oh yes your right its because i was uploading some 79 euros and got confused! glad you like it!

  • thank you for this video! but this is 1978, not 1979.
