It looks like a complex partial to me. Mine is in the left temporal lobe and I do the same purposeless movements. Your neuro should give you an answer after your son has his tests.
possible left frontal lobe epilepsy my son is on med for this he does alot of the things your son does but to more of an extreme the neuro will make you feel like crap like your going crazy keep pushing till you have an answer he could just have parasomnias but i do see a very accurate resemblance let me know how it goes x
