ok kevin....who is the person holding your camera when your away from it? I saw it zoom in and out while you were in line and when you were doing your silly white boy dance lol ^_^ but seriously, whose handling it when your not?
Its funny. You people are seriously detective like when you watch these. Just a random gaijin friend who was getting his visa renewed at the same time. I filmed him originally but he later e-mailed me and asked not to be included. Oh well.
I don t really know anythin..... but all i can say is that i wouldn t live in a foreing country where i can t get citizenship after livin' for more than 5 years..... don t you get tired of renewin that ever 3 years.......?
Awesome Mariachi music... man no matter how much I try, I just cant get around this Tanaka dude, does he have an identity problem... I mean, it seems he's a foreigner who is just trying very hard to be like a japanese person cause, I dont know, maybe he just like japan too much or something like that.
Congrats on a new 3 year visa. As an American in BKK I know how stressful a visit to the old immigration office can be. Do you have a degree, I think I heard you need one to stay in Japan. Is that true?
lmao, they have a 0% immigration rate? For those of you wondering about becoming a Japanese Citizen/National google Arudou Debito, or just goto his site at debito(dot)org
I know, I was giving you a hard time. On a serious note though; Japan receives about 15,000 applicants a year to become Citizens, most of which are accepted. I think the numbers you were looking at were 0 per 1,000 population. So while one looks like almost 0%, the real number is closer to the 90th percentile for applicants being accepted. Just clearifying.
mastacheif234; There are two ways; 1-Go through the process of becoming a Japanese National (Citizen) or 2-Live in Japan for more than ten years and become a Foreign Resident which gives you the privilage to not have to renew or apply for a VISA, but you may not vote or hold public office. Please goto debito(dot)org he documents all of this and their requirements.
I'm wondering if it's cheaper to get a J-Rail pass or pay for each individual Yamanote ride... You say it was an hour ride to Shinagawa, so that means you live around Ikebukuro, right? That's about hald of the Yamanote circle for 100 bucks... whereas a pass for rides whenever for 2 weeks costs 400 bucks for an adult... maybe it's just cheaper for visitors...
It only costs about 2-3 dollars by JR from Ikebukuro where I live to shinagawa. I only recommend the rail pass if you plan on going to another city like Kyoto, Osaka or Nara. Getting a round Tokyo the rail pass is helpful, but it cant be used on subways which are sometimes more direct.
Oh, okay.... I thought the total of $100 was just the ride... I thought, well, that's pretty pricey.... well, thank you! :D I will take that into consideration... I think I'll only be around Tokyo.
Just a thought... but as you love it there so much, and have been there 5+ years... ever thought of naturalizing (ie becoming a citizen of Japan)? ^_^
not worth it as you can't hold dual citizenship. Especially if you're American you got a huge advantage abroad. I use to live in Europe. also lived in Turkey for a bit. I know my US passport has saved my ass several times when police, and MPs would randomly ask for my info.
lol there are so strict....come to Dubai, if your visa is expired..who cares..as long you don't break the law they will nor arrest you in the middle of the street :p

basically you could say "Sugoku" Or you could probably say "chou." Yes, you used Yatta right, but if you really want to learn Japanese its not going to happen on you tube. Join a class or buys some books and STUDY STUDY STUDY. Good luck.
Americans can live in Japan permanently without passport. After all, Japan was liberated by the U.S in ww2, so no documentation is required to live there.
Actually on this occasion I ran into an old friend at the office who held the camera for me, had aout a 10 minute interview with him to boot, but he declined to be in the video at the end. Ya'll dont realize how much hits the cutting room floor (digitally speaking of course)
Im basically opportunistic with my Vlogs. I carry my camera at all times but there have been many great moments lost because I just didnt have the balls to ask someone to hold the cam. Im getting better at siezing the moment. The "fire&fireworks" vid is a great example. In reality they were not my chopsticks, and a stranger held the cam. But thats what makes for a good shot.
Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos, and being that I leave for my job (in Miyazaki) in less than a month I have to say your videos make me just a little excited to spend a long period in Japan!
Anyways, your videos are insightful and hilarious, so thanks.
Haha. I love the bad Japenglish at the end. I saw so much of that when I was in Tokyo last week! Its almost like, it doesn't even matter what it says, as long as its in Romaji!
I love Engrish... My ex-bf worked for a Japanese convenience store and they'd get him to make the English signs and then he'd get me to check them. It was cute.
When you went up to get the stamp who was holding your camera?
Great vid. It always ripped my undies that immigration isn't on a train line - mendokusai!! Apparently they used to have one in Shibuya, but closed it because it was too busy!
Yeah basically. The visas are ddecided on a case by case basis. So people who just entered the country cant really do it because they dont have any tax returns to show.
Now I know the OFFICIAL VISA RENEWAL DANCE (^_^) I am enlightened. Your videos are always fascinating. I am so glad that you got your visa renewed. (I have stake you see. If you stay you can make more videos about life in Japan... I secretly use them as therapy to deal with my withdrawal pains and the damage tone to me by my visa NOT getting renewed. Yes, I am the 'gaijin' being kicked out in your little deportation MAJIME comic strip that almost made me cry!)
Great like always. Someday I plan to visit Tokyo, and Japan in general { I'm only 16} but if I could I would do it tomorrow. There's something about it I need to experience for myself but for now I'll just keep watching your vids. Someday,
Obviously, someone else's celebrating their new 10-year visa at that Kaitenzushi joint! Your vids make me homesick terribly. I've lived in the States more than 20 years, but there hasn't been a single day that I didn't think about life in Tokyo! The BEST place to be in the whole world. Home sweet home!!
Hey, congrats on your three more years in paradise. Enjoy the ride!
Did you live in the city? On the "island"? Or somewhere upstate? (I live right aross the river on the Jersey side.) I grew up RIGHT in the middle of Tokyo as a kid. Of all the vlogs you've posted, the closest place from my home is probably Hie Jinja. My junior high school was within five minutes' walk from there (God, I just pray it's still there...) Last time I went back there was almost six years ago. It's been waaaaaay overdue. I'm vicariously enjoying the streets of Tokyo through you!
If you'd told me you were from the "Saitama of NY", THEN, I probably would've held it against you... But geographically speaking, you're right, Long Island WOULD be the "Chiba of NY."
I went through the Kojimachi school system growing up in the heart of Tokyo, plus one year of high school there before I left.
dude I'm sooo happy you got your visa. I agree with the comment below, I will also continue to spend my hard earned sleeping time watching your video blog :P lol There very useful as I plan to move to tokyo in the future. Domo arigatou gozaimashita
I was in Shinagawa just yesterday! If I'd know there was a Nathan's I would have TOTALLY bought a hotdog!

I don't know how many years you've actually been in Japan consecutively (I'm assuming 3 because of what you said about your 3 year visa expiring).
However, after 2 more years (so a total of 5 in the country) I believe you can actually apply for citizenship.
Not sure if you're planning on getting citizenship though because I think you have to give up your US citizenship in order to do so.

Actually on this occasion I ran into an old friend at the office who held the camera for me, had aout a 10 minute interview with him to boot, but he declined to be in the video at the end. Ya'll dont realize how much hits the cutting room floor (digitally speaking of course)
tokyocooney 4 years ago
well i wouldn't think that everything was planned out PERFECTLY so i've always kept in mind it would be quite a bit that goes on.
but anyway...when you DON'T meet people from the office do you just have random people hold your camera for you?
ctgirlxchris 4 years ago
Im basically opportunistic with my Vlogs. I carry my camera at all times but there have been many great moments lost because I just didnt have the balls to ask someone to hold the cam. Im getting better at siezing the moment. The "fire&fireworks" vid is a great example. In reality they were not my chopsticks, and a stranger held the cam. But thats what makes for a good shot.

Long time fan, first time commenter.
Just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos, and being that I leave for my job (in Miyazaki) in less than a month I have to say your videos make me just a little excited to spend a long period in Japan!
Anyways, your videos are insightful and hilarious, so thanks.

Thanks for watching, and commenting! You should be excited. The time will go fast.

Haha. I love the bad Japenglish at the end. I saw so much of that when I was in Tokyo last week! Its almost like, it doesn't even matter what it says, as long as its in Romaji!

Why not start a Taco Hell franchise in Japan since you love it so much? Think it would fly?

How could it not?

I love Engrish... My ex-bf worked for a Japanese convenience store and they'd get him to make the English signs and then he'd get me to check them. It was cute.
When you went up to get the stamp who was holding your camera?

Great vid. It always ripped my undies that immigration isn't on a train line - mendokusai!! Apparently they used to have one in Shibuya, but closed it because it was too busy!

Yeah when I first got here it was in Otemachi, which was convenient. The new place is a pain in the ass to get to.

So, basically you got the "Self-Sponsored Visa" due to the fact you've been in Japan so long?
Well, I'm glad for you! You deserve this kind of respect in Japan. You're a productive citizen who pays his taxes! ^^
SeijiMutoX2 4 years ago

:( Sorry to hear that about the visa.

Well, I do love my home of NY. But Tokyo is pretty great. Id be sad if I left.
tokyocooney 4 years ago
Did you live in the city? On the "island"? Or somewhere upstate? (I live right aross the river on the Jersey side.) I grew up RIGHT in the middle of Tokyo as a kid. Of all the vlogs you've posted, the closest place from my home is probably Hie Jinja. My junior high school was within five minutes' walk from there (God, I just pray it's still there...) Last time I went back there was almost six years ago. It's been waaaaaay overdue. I'm vicariously enjoying the streets of Tokyo through you!
TiramisuHappy 4 years ago
Im from the island and I went to university Upstate at Syracuse. I usually tell people in Japan Im from NY but Im from the "Chiba of NY"
tokyocooney 4 years ago
If you'd told me you were from the "Saitama of NY", THEN, I probably would've held it against you... But geographically speaking, you're right, Long Island WOULD be the "Chiba of NY."
I went through the Kojimachi school system growing up in the heart of Tokyo, plus one year of high school there before I left.
