you really don't have to be a yuppie bastard. PEople are the most picky about space in the US, and are willing to pay for that. There are cities where it is quite cheap to live within its limits. On the coastlines the cities are quite expensive regardless, but I know college students making it happen. Its about priorities, and if people think raising their kids in suburbs is better(I really don't). they'lll take out that mortgage, and be in debt for a few decades to have that life.
