  • I don't know, these big motivational team-talks never really get me going. THis is rated as one of the best ever, but I find I feel a bit depressed watching it, especially when Telfer trails off at the end "biggest game of your fucking life".... Sounds like he's about to top himself.

  • @vonteflon You're not an England rugby international are you?

  • @vonteflon Telfer once said that his strategy is to bring a player down emotionally and then build him back up to ten times his original strength. It isn't the typical motivational speech with high voices and shouting that people are used to, which is what makes Telfer unique. Consider how dedicated, focused and sincere the players must have been after this speech. The mood after this speech is one that will not and cannot accept defeat.

  • what was the pack that day?

  • @decdillon Smith, Woods, Wallace, Johnson, Davidson, Dallaglio, Hill, Rodber.

  • Johnson and Dallaglio are intense.............The type of guys you need in the trenches.

  • Are these clips from a documentary? If so what is it called? Thanks for the help.

  • @hbeytollah its from 'living with the lions" from the 1997 south africa tour!! got it on vhs, imagine its on the net or dvd!! well worth a watch!!!

  • Yarrows Ireland is not british and the fact that you don't know this sums up your hole country

  • These days the only Honour and Valour left in life is in sport, especially rugby.

  • Comment removed

  • Watch jonno all the way through that he never takes his eyes off JT, while some players put their eyes on the floor and take in what's being said, Jonno was fucking ready for that game there and then

  • Talk is cheap.

  • @Tehui1974

True bro, but they won this series.

  • @Tehui1974 2-1

  • Why the Fuck are Britain not represented more at sport instead of the home nations.I'm thinking football years back great English Scottish Irish and Welsh players, more world cups would have been won.

  • Many are considered...but few are chosen.

    Beautiful

  • Still looks like it's a bit clicky though. Notice how Leonard, Johnson, Rodber, Hill and Dallaglio got up together and went off. To be fair though, Johnson, Rodber, Hill and Dallaglio were immense on that tour. Mentions also to Smith, Wood, Wallace, Howley, Dawson, Gibbs and of course one of the best we've produced... Mr Guscott!

  • Ian McGeechan was born in Leeds, England. So he's English !!!! yeeeeahhhhhhhh, we have the best coach ever :D

  • @budwhite1 His Dad was Scottish. He thinks as himself as from Yorkshire, but thinks of his nationality as Scottish, rather than English.

  • @robsargent4

well he was born in Leeds. I'm born in Coventry but i would rather be from Kazacstan, i like .......

  • @budwhite1 His Dad was Scottish. If one or both of your parents was from another country maybe you would understand.

  • @robsargent4

My mum considers herself Irish as both her parents were but she was also born in Coventry, England ...

  • @budwhite1 Well, Ian McGeechan has a similar identity to your Mum.

  • @robsargent4

And your mum has an afinity with my enormous love truncheon ... ;P

  • @budwhite1 That's nice...

  • @budwhite1 great, love it

  • This is your Everest Boys...

  • i love the way that they all know that no other words are needed, every time i watch that the hairs on the back of my neck stand up, if a coach gave me that speech before a game i would do absolutely everything possible on a pitch, just incredible

  • this is yer fcukin' everest, boys

  • richard hill from my school

  • great video.

notice there;s a point where every player has their head down, apart from martin johnson who keeps eye contact throughout, .great captain.

and thats coming from a welshman.

  • and this is coming from a Scotsman;

Jonno was the most important player in the world at his peak. I'm not saying he was the best player, but he had no concept of going backwards or losing, he only understood winning. His own teams fed off that, the opposition gulped and looked at the ground.

  • @Scotsovertheborder Great point - im irish and the infamous event when Jonno wouldnt move off the red carpet for our president was a prime example..he layed down a marker right there..Jonno and his players were goin nowhere..it ticked me off big time but i think he psyched us out before a ball was kicked that day..having him on the field for any team was immense

  • couldnt agree more and im irish - leadership personified

  • anybody have the videos of the pledges they made. Seem to remember Keith Wood's one was amazing

  • one of the greatest speech i ever heard

  • tough men!

  • What a man. I could give a good show after that.

  • Immense FUCKING IMMENSE.

  • oasis playing in the background :L

  • Yeeesh!! You dont want your cellphone going off in the middle of that!!!

  • the boys could do with this before saturday

  • what was the team that day??

  • rugby league? whats that? oh thats right..the other thing....

  • Come on Lions!!!!!!!!! Everest!!!!

  • wow immense

  • Got goose bumps... this is a great insight behind the scenes if only other sports would be this open

  • our weakness was a piss poor kicker

  • Telfer awesome, Martin Johnson greatest captain of all time...I rem hearing scott quinnell saying from the 2001 lions that martin johnson was the greatest captain he evr had..."if martin johnson asked you to run through a wall, you'd do it...why? because there would already be a hole there from where he went through...massive respect fro him and im an irish rugby lover

  • Willie John might have a word or two to say about that

  • His word would be,

    "Aye."

  • gazgibson, you obviously don't watch any rugby and are a complete idiot if you don't think this passionate speech stirs the emotions..

just keep your unrelevant comments to yourself. this

  • what a twat thing to say "gaz" (!) "gibson"

  • Yeah, Jim Telfer the son of a shepherd is so upper class.

  • MUNGO ALERT

    MUNGO ALERT

    MUNGO ALERT

  • *yawn*

insecure RL fan in shock horror class attack on union.

  • Telfer used to be a school teacher, imagine getting a bollocking from him!!

  • Telfer was a schoolteacher way back in the day. I'd imagine he wouldn't do verbals... he'd do physicals.

    Broken ribs instead of lines

  • Brilliant motivation by Telfer

  • Awesome Telfer

  • aint sure thmite? quinell never ent missing mate, tim chose his game, listen, if ur a rugby fan i respect ur view, coz tim was awesome, but better than quenell?

  • IMO, the only better 8 in the history of the game was Buck Shelford. Funnily enough, Rodber was his understudy during his early days.

  • tancred 92 not bad but it was rodber not scottie at 8, shud av been scot tho

  • Rodber was 100 times the player of Scott Quinnell

  • What a classic line!!!! rodber wouldn't lace SQ's boots..... been up north latley??? thought not

  • Whatever. How come Rodber was picked instead, huh?

And did Quinnell ever dominate Lomu? No, he didn't.

Now how about a nice big cup of STFU.

  • Eric Miller of Leinster and Ireland was selected ahead of both of them and came down with the flu that day. Tim Rodber had the game of his life and was selected for the 2nd test too.

  • Who were the pack picked that day

  • Smith Wood Wallace

    Johnson Davidson

    Dallaglio Quinnell Hill

  • Current squad can produce 8 forwards who can eclipse the 97 pack!

  • Rodber was at 8, not Quinnell

  • cheers - wasn't sure

  • The Scots have that gift for coaching and inspiring ...'Geech, Telfer, and in Soccer ...Matt Busby,Jock Stein, Bill Shankly and Alex Ferguson. Come on the Lions!!

  • @TooDarnSoulful ...TRUE. SHAME ABOUT THE PLAYING THO

  • @123445706 2-1

  • Poor Tomás O'Leary, so unlucky, fractured ankle a month away my heart goes out to him.

    LIONS LIONS LIONS

  • always used to watch this on a saturday morning to get me motivated before a game,it never failed

  • check out the cream that will take on The Boks @ 6nationsgrandslam09

  • he's a motivating coach that old man

  • ugo monye aanddd riki areee inn itttt imm sweeeettttt..x

  • There was only a handful of Irish on that squad,i reckon tommorrow we'll get over 10 with Paulie as captain!:)

  • telfer has to go this time.. the game might have moved on, but that kind of energy and passion can't be overestimated.

  • what a speech by Telfer.

  • LIONS LIONS LIONS!!

  • Martin Johnson is just gorgeous.

  • its called living with lions.... Brilliant!!!

  • anyone know what the documentary is?

  • Living with Lions I think

  • Who said they could get up and leave? Sit fucking down

  • magical

  • This is awesome. Did jason leonard actually start the first test?

  • No, he was on the bench, front row was Tom Smith, Keith Wood and Paul Wallace. Leonard was favorite when the tour started but Wallace played incredibly well and took his spot.

  • This should be included in every coaching DVD. Brilliant stuff

  • haha it looks like a top documentary

i think telfer is way up there and he carried the scotland team for a long time

  • Got to love Tom Smith. He never says a word.

  • he never speaks anyway lol

  • Classic, classic scene. Love the way the camera slowly zooms into Johnsons face, who looks ready to step into the gates of hell.

  • superb stuff!

  • This is my all-time favourite scene from any movie, TV show or documentary. The hairs on the back of my neck are standing up as I type.
