@HomeMediaProductions no, no it is not. Todays nukes are so powerful, that the blast could easily wipe out a mile deep shelter. Even if it didn't the radiation would seep down there and microwave your behind.

PS i meant to say direct strike would take out a mile deep shelter, so unless you really ticked off the superpowers of the world you're fine.

@zoids180140 np wit the whole way i said it but still the atomic bomb works in a different way than most bombs yes you will die from something sooner or later if you stay in that shelter past an hour after the explosion because around then is when the radiation fall out starts and you have a high percentage of dieing but the way the blast works is that it goes out in a parallel type blast from the ground at 200 Ft in the air anything under it will burn into a pile of ashes within a second to

@zoids180140 give a great example of this look at either of the Japan bombings and i forget which one but the bomb (as i said is programed to blow up at 200 ft) blew up exactly over a building that was 200 ft tall the building is still intact today but every other building around it was blown to smithereens (oh and just so then it does not sound like u can not survive a "nuke" to anyone else reading there was a dude that went through both bombings and dyed from natural causes when he was 93)

@zoids180140 the most powerful atomic bomb is the Tsar it has a destruction radius of 35km(about 21 miles) but the bombs are not designed to go in deep they are designed to wipe out every thing around it the tsar bomb is also the cleanest nuke barely lets out any radiation the mushroom cloud of this bomb is really famous to it reached a little over 40 miles(about seven times the height of mt Everest) its about 1400 times stronger than both nuke used on japan combine

Say you built a shelter into the center of a mountain and started from the top and went down one mile, but never actually made it below ground, just to the bottom of the mountain. That's when it'd probably kill you if it landed say...within half of a mile?

@zoids180140 yes if it does land away from the mountain then yes it would kill you because you are above ground they are made to have a bigger blast radios because they are free fall bombs and if they miss the still destroy the target like the mountain in your example

Believe it or not, civil defense in the 1950's was less irrational than it seems now. The only way to deliver atom bombs back then was the bomber, and the Soviets had prop-driven "Bear" bombers, which would take many hours to get to the USA and most were quite likely to be shot down beforehand. So it was possible that few enough bombs would hit the USA to make Civil Defense realistic. The era of hundreds of < 1 hour ICBMs, which made civil defense pointless, did not begin until the mid 1960s.
