  • And i like how they call Queen Mary "Blood Mary"

Because Henri VIII, Edward VI and Elisabeth are innocent maybe?

Remember Thomas More and many other catholics (and even lutherians under Henri and Elisabeth's reigns) murdered for their faith.

    That's called a total hypocrisy.

  • Lewes, the centre of multi-denominational cohesion,NOT! But,thank whichever god you believe in that Britain can still hold these kinds of 'festivals' without fear of recrimination or legal censure! God save Britain!

  • Anyone who has been to Lewes Bonfire Night and thought it entertaining ( which it is ) should perhaps go to Valencia during Las Fallas, and see how that Spanish City celebrate their Saints` Day.

  • 1:59

The Big Book of British Smiles. :D

  • this video makes it look like bonfire night in general is all about burning religious figures and mainly lewes, okay some people have that view, but most people go to lewes cos its deemed one of the best bonfire nights and firework displays in england! i went to lewes with my freinds and we went to the pub, got a bit drunk and watched the procesions and watched the fireworks and had a good time in general and thats what most people come to lewes for! this video makes everyone looks evil ! lol

  • @MrCatholicforever you really dont understand the history behind this night do you?

  • Excellent!

  • Bunch of crazy sheepshaggers showing their pagan roots.

  • lewes is no where near london, its in sussex, i go every year and get all pagan

  • @ Urko2005..England is far from a protestant country, perhaps you should check the stats on that one..compare how many English protestants actually worship as opposed to muslims in good old limey. 6 men from EDL were arrested for burning the koran yet this English town is free to carry out this disgrace. What does that tell you about who and what really matters in UK today? you can offend Catholics but lets not offend the Muslims? If I were you, I would worry that Sharia Law is coming.....

  • @amazon1610

It's all about freedom of speech and liberty. The Effigy in question is that of Pope Paul V - the pope at the time of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. It is England's deliverence from the tyranny of the Church of Rome at that time that we Sussex folk celebrate and commemorate. It should be no more offensive to today's Roman Catholics than 4th July celebrations in the United States should be offensive to modern Britons.

  • @26May1989 Freedom of Speech and Liberty- quite right. My last post re this vid was rejected. I have no idea why !

  • @amazon1610 Catholicism, from an English perspective, is a foreign based religion with a poor human rights record. In other words we view it like rather like we view Islam.

  • @MrCatholicforever FEEL FREE TO LEAVE AND GO LIVE WITH LIKE MINDED CATHOLICS. DO YOU NEED HELP PACKING. BYE BYE

  • This is a lovely thing to do. They should have had an extra celebration tis week and burned the real thing.

  • Let me get this straight, these particular limey idiots hate the Vicar of Christ. But I never hear a peep from many Brits (especially from feminists) about Muslims who treat women like shit; who bury women up to their necks and then stone them; who sexually mutilate little girls' private parts; who commit "honor killings" against daughters; who punish women by cutting off their ears and lips; and whose Sharia Law is the bane for half the world's population!

  • @rockyracune

That is because unlike the paranoid americans many britans know that christianity has unlike islam influence on their country. So it is much more of a threat.

  • @rockyracune

The really awful thing about catholicism is that they are an entity that can be controlled to a certain decree. (by the pope,...) This means the grievances inside it could be simply ended. But the vatican is not willing to end it.

Islam on the other hand is nothing more then the amount of their followers. Followers, who are lead by nothing but an old book of fairytales that was not even rewriten like the christian one.

  • @rockyracune

What lets islam look that uncivilised is that it was forced to develop in uncivilised countries, what is manly the fault of the western world, from the crusades to the us.

Above all the cruel things you listed in your comment were not commited by muslims. They were committed by people who life apart of civilization.

If they were chisitans and had just an original version of the bible they would behave the same.

  • @rockyracune Thats probably because we're not as easily led by the media as you. Its an old tradition and i'm sure if it was an Imam who had run the faith responsible for the deaths of local people way back then we'd be burning an effigy of him too!

Bonfire night is the greatest night in the year, every year i get excited around now and i'm not the only one!

This is what makes me love sussex!

  • @rockyracune There is no such thing as the vicar of Christ. We don't hate the Pope, but we have to assert our independence from such foreign powers as the vatican. It's a bit like the Americans asserted their independence from Britain, and no doubt have customs to celebrate that.

  • I suggest Lewes just ignore all protests, and burn who they want, an effigy of me would be a privilege, it's a grand tradition, and you don't hear of hate crimes each year at Lewes, it's good at what it does, spontanious raw theatre - so get over yourselves if it offends you, your fundamentalists do much more heinous and evil things!!!

  • So... U want to burn an 80 year old man who is still working for man's goodness?

  • @MrCatholicforever , it's great there's a Catholic like yourself on here. Sharia law was made for cowards like these people. They have found an easy target. They are spineless !

  • @MrCatholicforever "I wish I lived in Spain or Italy a decent Catholic country unlike this heretic hell whole"

Off you go, then. There are planes leaving Gatwick and Heathrow every hour.

  • @MrCatholicforever Quite frankly a lot of religions need to face the fact that England is Protestant, if anyone has an issue with this fact, bon voyage.

  • @Urko2005 The last time they did a survey of how many people were in church on Easter Sunday in England, the number of Roman Catholics in attendance at Mass outnumbered the combined number of all the Protestants.

  • basically a bunch of middle class english arseholes

  • Remember remember the 5th of november,but watch out...he's arriving...burn him.

    Loving England Ever

  • Well thats what happens when the Catholic world declares war on you for 250 years! It aint the present Nazi pope, or the one before who tried make a WW2 croatian war criminal into a saint, no its the one that burned the martyrs in Lewes.

  • @MrCatholicforever (It's not a real pope, just a dummy mate.) By the way I hope you are far more disgusted at the burning of 17 real, live, protestant, human beings just for possesing Bibles who these glorious celebrations commemorate.

  • I hope God forgives England her sins.

  • @MrSagagothic, no popery in England. EVER.

  • @MrSagagothic Welcome to a country that isn't afraid to stand up to something its people see as mind control. As an ex catholic, I don't condone this, but I don't dislike it either. Its part of our traditions. And fact remains, Protestants and Catholics alike have died on our shores in great numbers for their beliefs. I believe there is one truth, and that I don't need a figure head, or his churches full of silver and gold, for that to remain true. The Catholic church is all about control.

  • love it!

  • the sad part about this burning of a pope effigy is that it is only an effigy, burn benedict the nazi!

  • In Arthur Beckett's 'Spirit of The Downs' states that bonfire had been free of any real anti-cathlic for many years, and that was written in the 19th century!!

  • I'm a mild-mannered (ho ho) protestant Englishman married to a Roman Catholic... we have five kids, all brought up RC... (mainly because it's a church that doesn't conveniently forget it's origins)...this does not stop me going to Lewes most Novembers to burn the Pope...it is tradition and nothing else...

  • its was great, we blew the pope into next week.

  • Its all a bit KKK isn't it?

Its weird that Catholic bashing is still so widely tolerated in the UK. Look at the outcry when Ruth Kelly admitted to being in Opus Dei and how Blair was scared to 'come out' as a Catholic until he had resigned as PM. Mental.

  • I don't agree with Catholic "bashing" BUT what is Catholicism? A religion. These should not be above criticism and yes riddicule. It is vital we keep our freedoms and remember those who died for them, As for Blair he dragged the name of Britain through the mud when he launched a crusade against the muslim world. For me I'm afraid Catholicism represents a return to the dark ages.

  • there are 100 of us coming down from Glasgow, looking forward to it.

  • We are Lewes and on the fifth of November we burn the pope (Paul V)

  • See dmmcat's post. Don't go posting silly remarks when you don't know the ins and outs of it.

  • Take it as a joke my fellow englishmen , because if we ever become as sectarian as Northern Ireland /West Scotland then would the last person to leave switch off the LIGHT!

  • if only every place in britain done this and burned the catholic schools and chapels it would be such a better place.

  • You should have been aborted.

  • If so-called 'Bloody' Mary had been healthy and produced strong children this lot would all be Catholics and would be burning Protestant effigies. Apart from a few martyrs religion in England has been determined first by tradition and secondly fear of whoever is in power. And in the musical chairs game of ascendancy to the throne the winner was a protestant, simple as that. Only an idiot would take part in this.

  • sludgefingers - Only an idiot (such as yourself) would pass such comment without doing a little bloody RESEARCH.

I take part in this and I'm an atheist. Try to see beyond your narrow literalist world-view.

  • On July the 4th, how about we burn in effigy the present Queen or up to this day King George III?

No, we are not that kind of people.

Charles / Camilla -- -- in effigy, only!

A new July dee 4th ritual; their images in huge balloons plus fireworks, cherry bombs and good old beer drinking live on TV.

It would Sell! ...be less filling and taste great! ;-)

  • im coming to lewes to burn the first born of all the protestant children then im going to shag all your good looking protestant wives, the ugly fat bastards you can keep. enjoy a muslim england u tossers.

  • This looks like incredibly good fun!

  • Fuck me and they complaine about the Orange order ha ha

    the irony!eh?

  • BUNN THE POPE

  • AHAHA WTF!

Okay, my friends are asking me to go to this.

It looks great, I wanna go!

    Bit scary though :S

I had no idea this is what they did :L:L

  • looks like a good night out to me..

  • the days called guy falks day! mind you up here in Northamptonshire the most hated is that bastard thomas tresham one of the catholic conspirators and a member of a hated local tyrenous land owning(stealing)family.

  • The Protestant Liberties of England I will maintain.

  • its an 1hour away from london lol i live there and i march

  • Yes and it is not the pope (or all popes) being burnt, but an representation of the particular pope at the time of the protestant martyrs.

  • Poldark3 first off do you mean Roman Catholic as the term catholic means anyone who accepts Jesus as their saviour and if I were you I would look into the history before you start spouting your kkk speal as the crosses are burnt in remembrance of 17 protestant martyrs burnt by the Roman Catholic's during the period 1555--1557 (the Marian Persecutions.) the event also celebrates the deliverance of King James the 1st and his parliament from Guy Fawkes and his conspirators (the gunpowder plot 1605)

  • No patriotism is neutral. All patriotism contains ideological tendencies, and British patriotism clearly fosters the development of Nazizm. Ever met a British patriot who advocates racial tolerance, respects homosexuals, respects the right to alternative dresscode or properly understands politics? I have not!

  • wtf?

    england allows free thinking .

if it wasnt for england standing up against pope//rome/papal there would still be slavery you would be burnt for not believing in god or not even believing in catholics.

    and this represents that.

if you dont agree with what england has given the whole world than why dont you just start setting fire to people again.

and the catholic church suported nazism and no gays so dont twist things round.

im a brit and i respect all religions if peaceful.

  • me...

  • You couldn't be more wrong. Surely a key part of British identity is defeating various dicatorships from Europe, Hitler and the Nazis being top of the list.

  • I think you are completely wrong. One of the corner stones of British identity is defeating various dictatorships from Europe, Hitler and the NAZIS being top of the list.

"British patriotism clearly fosters the development of Nazism." Were you drunk when you wrote this?

  • @masterofsedition1

u clearly havent met me :)

I travel the World telling people british are patriotic, open minded with gay when compared to most places -i myself am gay, dont try to BAN the Bhurka in the whole country -like France, and mixes with people off all creeds and nations

    Britain is a fine country

  • My name is Morgan & I am Catholic & i see this anti-Catholic show somewhat childish & the cross burning reminds me of the ku klux klan-simply pathetic!

  • Sorry if you're offened but it's not anti-catholic, it used to be hundreds of years ago I grant you but now it's just for fun.

  • Yes in the early years it was anyi catholic and sadly back in bad times of Northern Ireland, a certain Rev Paisly tried to high jack this celebrastion but all the Lewes Bonfire Societys rejected him totaly, Yes this celebrastion is wonderful and all the society collect for local charitys Please do not forget this.

And the comment of KKK is so stupid, and I would ask you to do some good research and get you facts before you speak

  • Get Over Yourself! Bonfire Isnt An Anti Catholic Event In The Slightest, The Crosses That We Burn Are Noting To Do With Religion, There Are 17, One For Each Martyr Burnt At The Stake Here In Lewes, Do The Research And Know What You Are Talking About Before You Express You Pointless, Unwanted Opinion! BURN THE FUCKING POPE!

  • fantastic

  • lol

  • Oddly enough Paisley tried turning up once and the Police recommended him to leave.
