  • @joelewoel, I had exactly

The same problem for a few days, might be too much grip on your chin rest with your chin. I sat down to play for a couple of days, then afterwards it went away

  • HI Todd. Thanks for all the Instruction that you have given me so far. Your a great, clear teacher! After practice I have real ache in on my bowing side. On my shoulder and elbow a small amount but mainly on my back and underneath my right shoulder blade. Is this normal? Is there any exercises I can do to help? Thanks for the teaching! Joel

  • the feel thing actually made it for me... Thanks

  • professorv when i ger the bow close to the bridge it sounds squeecky. does that mean something is wrong with my violin? i developed a habit of drifting too far off from the bridge trying to avoid that sound which i realised through your videos is a mistake. should i have my violin checked? and is it possible to have a string poorly attached? i have a feeling my D string is extremly hard to play with out the sqeecky sound.

  • Hi Professor Todd, it is possible to watch that you bow straight when you're playing slowly. However, is there any way to ensure that you're bowing straight when you're playing really fast?

  • Everytime I re-watch ur videos I learn something new!

  • Thanks, professor! I'm 14 and just started learning, and your videos are SO helpful!! I wish you were my teacher :)

  • @kutasbros me too !!!

  • i dont understand why will my bow move sideways by itself? feels like the rosin made it slippery

  • very nice tutorial

  • Hi. I don't know how to play the violin and I'm not planning on learning, but I like listening to your videos as I work because your tone of voice is very soothing, almost hypnotic.

  • Thank you! I have struggled as a beginner for some time. After watching this I realize that this is my biggest problem. It was one my teachers always said I needed work on but never to the extent that I discovered today.

  • this is exactly what i needed! :)

  • Thank you, so very much for your generously donated time and energy producing these marvelous videos. It is truly a delight to hear you teach and a joy to learn these things for free. Rest assured that it is being put to wonderful use. Thank you!!!!!

  • Oh I forgot to also mention that I have played guitar for about 5 years or so. I'm sure that would at least help in learning violin i'd imagine

  • Thank you so much for these videos it is hard to find good video lessons for violin these days.

A question out of curiosity though. How long would you guess it would take me (I'm 18 years old if age matters) to get decent at violin if I work hard at it?

  • @def3mno62

Same, I'm 18 too! I've always wanted to play the violin, please keep at these videos, they're great. I haven't started yet, Im still waiting to get a hold of a violin :)

  • That little tip about using slip to produce diminuendo was very cool!

    Thanks for the lesson!

  • Salute!!!!

  • thx 4 posting this video. Although i have no problem w/ that, i just wanted to ask a question. How would u tune a viola that's gone like really out of tune, like when a viola G-string sounds like a D string? My teacher has taught us how 2 tune minor stuff. I tried 2 tune my instrument using the pegs, but he peg kept on turning by itself.

  • Thanks for your lucid, practical explanations.

Everything is demystified! Your videos are an act of great generosity.

  • I am learning!!! Got the squeaks out!

  • In addition to the problems with bow bouncing that bearpalomo expressed, I also frequently have the pitch go flat (with left hand remaining the same). Any suggestions. Thanks very much for your free instruction. I am a 50+ beginner and have probably learned more from your videos than anything (or anyone).

  • Hi, Thanks for the kind comment. Work to get an even bow weight from frog to tip by starting at the frog with all four fingers on the bow. As you start bowing, first lift your pinky, then the ring finger, then the middle. You will then reach the tip, turn the bow (go up bow) and add the fingers one at a time. This trick should teach you how to feel the weight roll towards your index finger as you bow to the tip. Good luck!

  • your awesome :]

learned virbrato and working on straight boow

  • Hi,thanks for these videos. They are very helpful for the ones like myself that can't afford lessons at the moment but are trying to advance in the instrument. I would like your advise in the basics of: right amount of pressure/tension in the bow hair, right amount of resin in the bow hair, changing strings and tuning the instrument. Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

  • thank u very much veyr, very helpful and proffesional, i first thought it would be only for beginners but then i realized you are talking about some serious technical concepts!

thank u ! and keep posting!

  • Thanks so much for this lesson (:

  • Thank you very much for these lessons. I am looking forward to applying many of these and advancing faster. I really like the "behind the scenes" (tricks) information that you give.

  • I have a problem with the bow bouncing. What can I do to fix that? Also, I get a lot of unpleasant squeaking/squawking in between notes sometimes. What causes that and how can I fix it? I thought I might need more rosin, but I'm not sure. Can you put too much rosin on, how much should you put on, how can you tell if you have enough/too much/not enough? Thank you so much for posting these videos and your time.

  • Hi, Sometimes a bouncing bow means that you are dropping the wrist-forearm too rapidly (or at at an angle more severe than the bow is traveling). Watch your wrist to see if this is the case. Sometimes just letting your right arm "hang" (instead of pressing) will fix it. On down bows, try to let the bow travel withought getting in the way with the mechanics. Does this make the bow straight? If so, does that fix your problem?

  • Yes, you can get too much rosin. It will get gritty sounding. Too little and you will not have a good grip of the string. You'll learn by feel and with your ear how to get it right.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • Great video- thanks for the reminder to keep the bow at the same spot. I just realized I haven't thought about that for a very long time and it'll definitely improve my consistency. Thanks so much!

  • Ben, Someone actually sent me an email just today and said they'd been watching your videos (small world, I guess). Thanks for stopping by and leaving a very kind comment! BTW, I enjoyed your Bach G minor Fugue very much. Regards!

  • Awesome! I think our styles complement each other very nicely and I'm a subscriber of yours now :-)

  • nice video, it helps my open string practice a lot.

  • hey that was interesting...great video. Thanks for posting.

  • I imagine you must be wonderful with beginners. I loved hearing the many teaching tricks you have come across. It's important to have more than one since not everyone learns the same way. Thank You
