  • am (hic) from (hic) orkney his an (hic) i take hic offecnce (hic)

  • PS. (But I still like the original Donald McGillavry better, and Andy is a far far better singer! And I forgot to mention what was funny. I'm the one who listens to old folk and blues and such, but when I looked up Donald McGillavry and found this funny group named Silly Wizard and started to play it, my mother who was in the other room immediately says "hey, that sounds like Silly Wizard!". She says she saw them in the first year they came to the US and remembered his voice for 30 years!

  • Funny. I've liked folk music of all kinds since I grew up (I guess I get it from my dad), but I'd never heard this song until my sisters boyfriend loaned me a CD of a group called the Empty Hats. Not as talented as Wizard, but they obviously enjoy it. They seem to admire Silly Wizard, because several of the song they do are Wizard songs, or the same traditional ones they did (plus a new version of Donald McGillavry!). They do this one too, but it's faster, better in some ways.

  • I have been looking for this song for YEARS. I thank you so much for posting this, may the wind be ever at your back!

  • I used to sing this on the bus home from competitions with the pipe band, until I changed and no-one knew it. I know all the words thanks to those trips. Brilliant song.

  • 51 people are Lady Gaga fans

  • What a wonderful song. Always makes me sing along!

  • My love for this song doesn't need stating. Instead I've been puzzling as to how 51 of the people who actually cared enough to vote didn't like it. I suppose they would be those who save and scrape and ponder.

  • @Xyalon Yeah i guess those of us who love this song are happier as a rule. lol

  • If you can't sing this song, you don't deserve to listen to it. Memorize and recite, my friends!

  • @gigasloth

So, tell me, how are people supposed to memorize the song if they can't listen to it if they haven't memorized it in the first place? Some logic here would be nice.

  • @Kawamura2

They probably just thought it was "clever."

  • @Kawamura2 Well now, that's a simple one. This song is one of those that speaks of truths and joys so deep, that it transcends normal reality and can enter one's heart and mind with out having to first pass the ears ;) Or at least that's my take on it, Though I admit that I came to the thought when drinking much roga, mead, and what ever else, and singing at the Grand Outlandish one year. So I admit that my reasoning could have been influenced slightly.

  • My favourite song ever. Thank you thank you thank you for uploading it, it's great to be able to listen to it wherever!

  • for me, 'tis the harmonies....

  • karamura2, thank you so much for this post. Best version.

  • today, as well as ever, we need the rambling rover...

  • I love this song. Every time I hear it I want to just grab my pack and go wandering. I really like the little tune in the lyrics, making it sound more musical then an entire orchestra could. Silly wizard is awesome, Johnny Cunningham's passing was one of the worst things to happen to music in the past hundred years.

  • My goal in life is to visit Ireland, go to a pub, and sing this song, along with Danny Boy and the Wild Rover.

  • @MartyrXY Shootin' real high, aintcha?

  • This makes me smile.

  • ya at leaste I tried.Oh yay.

  • There is an awesome message to this song. Its simple, practical and great.

  • @wunjothurisaz I agree. I love the song because it is about not taking life too seriously, and enjoying as much as you can, and about not limiting yourself by society's standards, at least the standards that hold people back from enjoying life.

  • @Kawamura2 yes exactly and I chuckel as I listen to this one makes my heart happy.

  • @wunjothurisaz I sang this a a gathering, and introduced it by saying 'Janie thinks this sounds like a drinking song, and I can't disagree. But I've always thought it's about living an active, balanced life...

  • @glacier1980

Yeah, Always a neat and quaint tune to learn from other places. I used to know the words to Whiskey in a jar, and the gypsy rover.

  • Didnt the Dubliners Do The same Song?

  • @digiboy10 Yeah, most Irish folk bands(Dubliners, Pogues, Silly Wiz, ect) do a lot of the same songs.

  • Erin go Brack!

  • @lokturnus

    "Erin go Bragh?"

  • i first herd this song in 1998 when a friend gave me the album Live Wizardy. Its Fab.

  • a friend play this for me,I enjoy so much.Every song is great. Thanks for the music fellas.

  • I think thats a great way of putting it, and I'd never thought of it, thank you. :)

  • I love Scottish and Irish drinking songs, even though I'm allergic to alcohol...

They have many great uses outside of drinking, like acting as free antidepressants and making walking through cities easier by scaring off crazy people with knives, petitions for you to sign or who want to talk to you about Jesus...

  • ehhh you don't have to be a drunkard to love scottish and irish folk songs. They go beyond that, they're very human songs. I love 'em and i am not what you would call a drinker. A Guinness every once in a while but mostly no :)

  • @AllisonBeriyani Sing this song out loud or hum it to yourself?

  • Go to the source: he wrote it :-) And man, has it expanded around the world ever since.

  • stewart= as in Mary Queen of SCOTS

  • Well, the guy's last name is Stewart, and that's a SCOTTISH name

  • wrong, it's on their wiki

  • im a die hard metal fan....but i allways loved celtic music....brilliant!!!!.....very talented musicians......

  • Great version! Do you have any videos of "Donald MacGillavry"?

  • I know that very well, thank you. I wrote the comment while exhausted from lack of sleep, which makes me start writing phonetically. YouTube doesn't let a person edit their own posts (at least I haven't found a way), so once the misspelling was there I couldn't do anything.

  • This album was off the Green Linnet label (an import) and is no longer available.

  • this song is on the live wizardry cd from green linnet records..hope this helps you

  • thankyou so much for adding this

IM he guy that had the blinding account changed account, but thanks so much (y)

  • Great song

  • Very cool! :)

  • thankees ^_^

  • Fit like?

Wonderful to find 'Silly Wizard' on youtube. One of my fav's is 'The Queen of Argyll'.

  • well this is in response to the queen of argyll video i put up, so just click the this is a video response to link.

  • Kinda groovy there Raybees :) Makes me wanna listen to Drunken Lullabies for some reason :P

  • yeah, this and Queen of Argyll are the only silly wizard songs i have heard but i definitely want to hear more. I love Irish/celtic music.

  • Sounds like an Irish folk song.

  • It is :)

  • I think it is a scottish folk song since Silly Wizard is a scottish folk band.

  • oh yeah, they are, i forgot

  • It should be noted that this song is not traditional, though. It was written by Andy M. Stewart, a god among Scottish singer/song writers. Andy also wrote The Queen of Argyle.

  • We have a lot of irish folk songs here in the best province in Canada: Newfoundland and Labrador. Yes, Newfoundland and Labrador is one province for some reason.

  • Irish?? Not Scottish no??

  • scottish

  • No Scottish, he actually wrote the song, it's not traditional and he's Scottish
