  • This is pretty good. I didn't like what was considered emo in the 90's...but it sounds Damn Good to me now. I found myself feeling defensive for the emo bands of the 90's when what the fuck ever it is that is now called 'emo' became apparent. Like, I thought the emo kids in my scene were pretentious jerks, but...they were Our pretentious jerks. Whatever...those of us who haven't stopped rocking aren't so divided anymore...just happy to still see each other at shows. Young until I die!

  • If people are ok with listening to lyrics they can't understand, I suggest people check out a fantastic Japanese band called Cowpers. They sort of remind me of Small Brown Bike or Drive Like Jehu. Also, look up "Bluebeard". They're a lot softer than Cowpers. Almost like Jimmy Eat World or The Appleseed Cast. They only put out one self-titled album in 2000 or so but every song is amazing.

I'm not Japanese but really into Japanese music, and it never gets enough attention in the West.

  • i love all of these bands (except i don't really know thursday or mineral). however, while yes, they're all emo, i wouldn't call them post-emo. isn't "second wave emo" a more apt description? first wave would be like rites of spring, second wave drive like jehu/cap'n jazz/american football, and then the third wave would be the get up kids and all of that other whiny shit that gave emo its horrible reputation. then algernon cadwallader and snowing would be emo revival.

  • Panic at the disco is SHIT, NOT EMO, loser stupid poser, EMO IS MINERAL. EMO IS 90'S <3

  • @samanthaulpaCDS789 Ummm, Emo started in 80's.

  • thx 4 for this good songs too,

  • who the fuck cares what genres they are. just listen to what you like.

  • stop with the labelling, its a form of hardcore, end of! its good!

  • WHAT THE FUCK! calling At The Drive-in emo is a fucking INSULT to each and every one of them! They are POST-HARDCORE! GOD DAMN! why would you say such a thing about ATDI! Asswhole!

  • @pinkpop91764

You probably have no idea or concept of what emo actually is. It's a off shoot of early mid 80's hardcore punk not the pussy depressed shit on tv and radio. And correction, I didn't call ATDI 'emo' I called them post emo and for the record I only consider their early music (pre vaya) to be post emo, the rest is as you say post hardcore.

  • @thatguyonstage you guys are faggots who just want to argue with one another. way to make life a pissing contest.

  • @pinkpop91764 Emo and post-hardcore are the same thing dumbass. It all started with 2 bands; Rites of Spring and Embrace in the mid 80's which was after the hardcore movement, hence the term post-hardcore. It was then given the nick name emo-core of just plain emo (which the bands hated btw). Then came Fugazi who pretty much paved the way for bands such as sunny day real estate, ATDI, Drive like Jehu ect.

  • why did you give this video this title? did you want a civil-internet-war? SHUT 'T.

  • why would you include emo in the title of a video? did you want a civil-internet-war?

  • @crlsen hahaha yeah, even though emo is the correct word for these bands, the horrible, horrible reputation it has will probably never be disassociated with it. using the word "emo" on the internet is a sure-fire way to make everyone hate your guts. it's too bad, because emo is actually a respectable genre.

  • dont care what u call this or whatever.... its DAMN GOOD MUSIC Period.

    heheh he said Period.....

  • cap'n jazz and at the drive-in are great

  • not saying im right, but i always considered these bands, with the exception of thursday, to be "emo", and the latter to be post, well no matter how you label it, all great bands

  • God Mineral is fucking awful

  • Just don't even use the word "emo" anymore. It has lost all meaning and taken on some mainstream misinterpretation. Just stop.

  • can someone bring this kind of music back?!

  • SO I was gonna correct you by saying this would be considered "second wave emo", but now I realize it is more of a sub-genre of that. Check out the band My Hotel Year's album "The Composition of ending and phrasing". I think you would really dig it, if you can find it! peace

  • Hey, here's a paradox: Post-Progressive

    :p

  • shit has great instrumentals

  • Every band in here are my favorite. I dont kid.

  • What is the name of the ATDI song in this video?

  • As for me, I discovered what "emo" was when I saw Admiral in about 1990 or so, in a basement. it was fucking incredible....I seriously thought I was gonna start bawling for a minute....

Admiral was an early Joseph McRedmond joint. There are a couple of rare seven inches, but you might be able to find something on the cybertron. Look for "Revolving and Loading," and "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime."

A little less "emoey" and a little more technically awesome were Hoover and the Crownhate Ruin...

  • @BrassFiglageeFilms Yeah, but they had the grunge scene, same difference.

  • @BrassFiglageeFilms

i fucking agree, i was like ten when alot of these bands came out :/ but i dont kill it like other people do

  • (Continuing on from above post. Ran out of characters.) An example of a genre that uses the prefix post, is Post-Punk. Which has a dull, plain, underplayed sound, is more complex. And if you did not KNOW the genre was called Post-Punk, you'd think it was called something else, and had no relation to punk. Compare The Sex Pistols(Punk) with Joy Division(Post-Punk) To understand what I'm saying. "Post-Emo"? Who ever thought of that tag is an idiot.

  • If you guys were really emo you would be too busy reflecting on a sunset or learning violin to argue. which is gay you're all fags. way to go.

  • some of the best music ever

  • emo is emo, wether it be post, pre or any other word you want to put before it, as long as the music has its roots in punk and its played with feeling then it's emo! stop arguing, go start a band, or a zine or put shows on and keep the scene alive!

  • sick bands

  • Agreed!

  • "if we ever meet again, it will be too soon!" Love this and more importantly, much love for Thursday.

  • I love emo, plain and simple. It owns all other music.

  • what are a couple good emo bands? most of the "emo" music ive heard are piles of shit

  • if ppl are gonna disagree whether this is emo, post emo, pre-emo..?, or not emo at all then an we at least agree that what is considered emo music today should be done with and bring this kind of music back

  • good choice acrobatic man.

  • huh?

Cap'n Jazz were a band during the early-mid 90's. Emo started in the early 80's.

    You're an absolute dolt.

  • @thatguyonstage

capt´n jazz is a screamo band..?!

  • cap'n jazz is sick

  • @opoticalmonky LOL @ "pre emo"

  • really? post-emo? why, this is post-retarded. *ba-dum pssh!*

  • Streaks in the Sky is more indie than post-emo. I consider their current stuff to be somewhat post-emo.

  • holy crap, Cap n' Jazz!

  • anyone else think atdi, ripped cap n jazz?

  • yes esp their earlier recordings.

  • @bbeaup Eh, they do sound kind of similar, but I think it would more of a combination of sounds that inspired ATDI

  • YOU ARE THE BEST^^

  • i fucking love 90s rock music!

  • Thursday equals win

  • only in a world where win equals second best. At the Drive-In takes the cake. lol, no your opinion is just as valid.

By the way, Its senseless to say only one genre is emotional, but its also senseless to argue over genre names period. its all music.

  • god dude

  • Oh, and At The Drive-In is Post-Hardcore and Drive Like Jehu is post-punk/post-hardcore not "Post Emo".

  • the first ATDI full lenght was post-emo along with some of their early 7 inches... the REST was post hardcore.

Drive Like Jehu was post emo with a math rock over tone. some of their material however would be better described as post emo.

it's difficult because many bands that played 'post emo' only played it for a short period of time. it truly was an odd short lived genre.

  • At the Drive-In never never use the term "post-emo" to described their music nor did Cap'n Jazz, nor did Drive Like Jehu.

It's a complete subjective term that people confuse. And everything that you said is subjective, and I really doubt that any band would and did classify their music with a subgenre that wasn't even suppose to be. Maybe they did, but it was later on changed to Post-Hardcore, Post-Punk and Math Rock.

  • i wish i could give this comment a thumbs up. it is a good one. but for whatever reason you cant give thumbs up/down to the poster of the video.

  • I think the discussion if a band plays emo, post-emo or post-hardcore is quite senseless.

  • Agreed. Just let the music speak, stop interrupting it =]

  • ... Post emo?

  • are you dense?

post emo = the contents of this video

  • are you moronic?

what in fucks name is "post emo"?

  • post emo is like emo of the 80's but more indie and slightly more poppy, but still not really pop like the bands that people call emo today (like we the kings and all time low :P)

  • Referring to my comment below

    p/s: 'skipped' as in 'overlooked'.

  • Whoa! Why dont we just appreciate the music and put aside all our personal opininons? Though, these thing needs some explanation.

The first band to be considered 'emo' which is 'emotional hardcore' back then in '86 themselves rejected the term they were labelled

On the following years, many so-called 'emo' bands too, had to face these kind of situation. Most of them rejected

But then, I thought, maybe most people skipped the disclaimer part early in the video so that's when they screwed up.

  • but, a majority of this was Pre- Emo. In fact they weren't even emo to start with.

  • Comment removed

  • they weren't even emo

  • Comment removed

  • you mom is emo then, she gave birth to a kid who thinks fucking further seems forever was an emo band. 'how depressing'

further seems forever were part of the first wave of bands who mixed together post emo and more trendy aspects of commercial radio rock...

  • dude i seriously couldnt give a shit... dont let it ruin your day yh?

  • plain fucking stupid if you think further seems forever is emo. they just suck dick altogether.

  • depressing has absolutely nothing to do with emo. not trying to fuck your shit up here, but thats a huge misconception.

  • apart from the fact the word emo means emotional or emotive

seriously people please dont bother wasting ur time commenting back because i really cudnt give a shit what u think is emo coz i dnt even listen to it

i just gave it a try

dnt let it ruin ur day that i dont like the music

  • exactly emotive. emotions in this genre range from anger all the way to straight happiness. apart from saetia, a majority of these bands dont have depressing lyrics at all. they got the name "emo" when people admired they stage presence and lyrics which didnt confine itself to one set of emotions. and if you dont care then dont worry about responding but this is to everyone else who thinks this genre is driven by basic guidelines that modern day post hardcore lives by.

  • its funny because we cans see a relative thats forming in the english music scene. check out tubelord, blakfish, hot club de paris, or pulled apart by horses. just basicaly anything on bigscarymonsters label

  • I thought it should be added the Cap'n Jazz was one of the first emotive bands to bring an Indie feel to their music.

  • Drive like jehu? I dunno, more like math rock to me.

  • kind of important to remember that genre labeling is used for the sake of convenience. nothing more, nothing less. everyone seems so into either totally overstating or understating this. convenience, that's all!

  • i always thought of capn jazz as more like 'art rock' than emo. and people called bands like Lifetime emo.

  • I had heard Thursday were amazing... looks like people were correct...

  • Mineral isent emo, they arent punk enough to be emo

  • Post Emo is Emo without the Hardcore Punk influence.

  • Even though these bands did have Hardcore Punk influences:)

  • Well the only band I would consider Post- Emo here is Mineral and maybe Thursday. Cap'n Jazz is FWE, At the Drive In Post-Hardcore and Drive Like Jehu would maybe be, I don't know Post- Hardcore with Math Rock influences.

  • fwe?

  • First Wave Emo. Well they are like a mix between first and second.

  • what? dude, 'first wave emo' was in the early 80's... much earlier than these bands.

  • It's kind of the same style though, and Cap'n Jazz was in the early 90's right, before SDRE?

  • At the Drive-In's first album is post-emo.

  • I had heard Thursday was terrible . . . looks like people were correct . . . I like Cap'n Jazz and ATDI though . . . just in case someone takes me for a troll and asks me why I'm even here, blah blah blah . . .

  • Lets not forget Quicksand, one of my favorite bands, seen them like 3 times along with Deftones.

  • What happened to Jawbox? You know, I wonder why they were almost labeled emo when they were more progressive DC punk if even punk at all, they were more like Fugazi, which is was the more major influence of a lot of the post hardcore bands in the 90's, or hardcore, excuse me.

  • this isn't post-emo. it's just emo....

  • emo is shit like Indian summer, still life ...stuff along those lines... these bands sound nothing like that

  • exactly. don't forget to throw in Shinead O"Conner and Alanis Morrisette and the Cure (i think the Cure are honestly emotional as they are which would be more exceptable). In my opinion, Emo now would seem to be a new form of New Wave . Great post, it takes me back

  • its all emo, just hairsplitting.

  • at the drive in were post hardcore pre emo ?

  • pre emo would be hardcore punk.

  • no cos then it would be hardcore punk haha

  • no, im just saying, pre-emo would be hardcore punk, considering it is a direct offshoot of hardcore.

  • ok if this is post emo whats the 2004 emo stuff? im not talkin about scene, it goes punk, hardcore, posh hardcore, emo, post emo, scene

  • realistically, post hardcore and emo are the same thing. ive never heard of post emo, only indie-emo.

  • just cos u aint heard it dont mean it dosent exsist, post hardcore - at the drive in, glassjaw thats nothing like emo?

  • its def emo. look at embrace, they sound very different than moss icon, but its all emo.

just soo much splicing of genres, if somethign sounds the slightest different, it needs a new name.

  • no its really not

  • thats like saying hardcore isnt punk.

    same shit, different pile.

  • no its really not

  • hmmm, well not exactly, I am starting to hear more bands leaning backwards again towards the early 90's hardcore style again. It just seems more raw before, now , bands seem to be trying too too hard to be different that they start to sound the same as all the other so called "emo" bands that sound like Dashboard Confessionals mixed with hardcore and Promise Ring.

  • haha, i dot even know what you are responding to, but there will always be bands for every kind of music, no music ever dies really.

End Of A Year are an emo band, and they are great.

  • SUPER good call on END OF A YEAR. band is fucking amazing. split 7" with shook ones.

  • So good.

The new 7" is soooo good.

  • Well, as bad as the term Emo is, Post-Emo is great...when its not overdone.

  • the word emo is gey. people are gey for using it. some are gonna say i need to check my spelling on gay. but gey is funnier. leave me to myself please. just putting my opinion. all this is just rock to my ears.

  • haha as I read the first 2 sentences i got ready to correct you and then I kept reading

  • hahaha ftw!

  • I don't care that you misspell gay, I just don't like that you're not even using the word correctly.

Gay is not a substitute for the Lame or Stupid.

  • I don't see you making these videos.

  • Where is american football, texas is the reason, christie front drive, sunny day real estate, The appleseed cast??? Eh?

    It's 4. Only for mineral. ;)))

  • Love this list...whole-heartely agree with your disclaimer. Why do people still say "an emo"...like it's a noun? It's not like "a punk". You CANNOT be "an emo". You can't even BE "emo". Just listen to it...don't be it.

  • You're right in that in makes no sense to call someone "an emo", I don't even know what that comes from to be honest. What I do remember are people called Emo Kids. That term goes way back.

  • hey

    great compilation

    you know

    I love these bands

and if that makes me an emo or something like that

well FUCK I am an emo or something like that¬¬

  • No one can be emo. We can only listen to it and enjoy it.

  • the singing from mineral reminds me of john nolan singing,

  • emo or post emo...all the bands are fantastic!

  • woooo cap'n jazz. guys were awesome. oh and nice videos man. it's good to finally see videos with real emo/screamo and not generic bands.

  • Can you do more post-emo videos? It is really god.

  • I don't think that At the Drive-In should be categorized as emo.

  • And I whole heartedly agree; they're not an emo band, but their first full length (as well as the material released before) was post emo. Post emo and emo are two different things, and furthermore, if you actually read the disclaimer it states that these songs are used to represent post emo, not so much the bands playing them. Post emo was short lived, many bands who played the style later moved on to other genre, ATDI being an excellent example of this.

  • Seriously? lol

That was the stupidest comment I've ever read. Post emo is recognized as a legit genre and it has been for years, I didn't make it up.

  • ya post emo post punk post hardcore they are all genres

  • mineral n at the drive-in, exelent

but, who play the firsth song?

  • cap n jazz shouldn't be in this list. they had a influence on what was to become the poppier emo along jawbreaker. ala texas is the reason, sunny day real estate ya kwo> anshit

  • ???

All post emo influenced the current bullshit. These bands laid the main foundation for the whiny pop rock of today. Even still, these bands were actually good unlike those to follow.

  • i know. i wasn't knocking any of the bands. drive like jehu is one of my favorite bands. wow i rarely make sense. you have a hate group on last fm. it's pretty funny. 'internet tuff guys'

  • I love that group btw. One of the members is being heckled by the others, they want the mod to ban her, funny thing is she was one of the first to make a note to show me the group and proclaim her involvement. I love the internetz.

  • This is a really awesome video! I'm not too familiar with post-emo besides at the drive in but I really like these songs. Thanks for making this vid.

  • post emo?? no self-respecting band would ever refer to themselves as 'emo' in the first place. a totally nonsensical categorization. that being said, Jehu slays, and has no relation to anything emo.

  • All things considered, the term is fucking retarded, but it wasn't always that way. Also, how can you say Drive Like Jehu has no relation to anything emo? Just listen to their music, it's a total cross between post punk, and post emo.

  • they're noise rock

however like fugazi and pavement they did influence mid 90's emo

    anyways drive like jehu rules

  • hey thatguyonstage, check out the Band Knapsack.

I think you might like them.

    watch?v=igj9_zSF9pY

  • Mineral is one of the best band ever

  • i like thursday but their new stuff is shit

  • For the most I agree. That last full length they put out was so mediocre compared to their other music. I'll hold out until I hear their new split with Envy before completely writing them off, who knows they might start writing music worth while again.

  • True. They did tour earlier this year with Circle Takes The Square last year so who knows what'll happen.

  • If you were born after 1985'ish and you claim to know everything about this music, let that guy on stage know so I can beat it out of him next time I see him at a show :D

  • People like you make me sick. Cut the tough guy shit. I don't even fucking know you, yet you want to fight me?

  • jehu was in a whole 'nother realm than any of these bands. come on, they were a rock band, and incredible one at that.

  • drive like jehu rules

  • i love

Mineral, At the drive-in, Penfold, Drive Like Jehu, Christie front drive, Cap'n jazz, American football and more... lol

  • This bands are a completely honest musical movement, this is true emo, the first emo.

    The only emo music

  • Nope. This is post emo, this musical movement came after/as the original emo movement was dying out. The two are very different from one and other.

  • Is this actual emo? cause there were plenty of bands the mid 80's who pioneered the sound. I don't know, don't really care. Thanks for uploading this bruv.

  • This is Post Emo. It's quite different from Emo. This form of music emerged when Emo was dying out in the early to mid 90's. Post Emo is softer, and far less abrasive.

  • I think Drive Like Jehu is, for the most part, fairly abrasive.

  • Wow Thursdays changed. A lot.

  • I miss their old sound. It puts their new music to shame. The emotion was so much more out in the open with the older stuff, even in their second album Full Collapse. I just feel that Thursday made a huge mistake by adhering to that old cliche "we are growing as an artist" crap. I prefer consistency over variety. In other words, if I like something, then I can't have enough of it. I would have been totally content with Thursday writing the exact same album 4 times over so long as it's good.

  • Yeah too many bands become more watered down and less emotional. Too many bands nowdays sell out and they say "we've just changed our style and grown". I mean as long as a style is good, like you said, I wouldn't care if all their songs were the same style.

  • You know what? I think these whole genre education vids are fucking stupid. Who gives a shit about genres. Like music for the sound, not the genre. What if 50 Cent was post-emo or some dumb genre like that? would you listen to him? No I didnt think so. I mean I agree with the fact that bands like MCR arent emo and Rites of spring is, and I know what "real" emo music is, but come on man. And if you didnt like a band that was classified as emo, youd just say its not emo because you don't like it.

  • Not true in the least bit. I would never let my personal bias effect what genre a certain band are.

Here's a thought, ever think that perhaps people do like this music for the sound? Ever stop and think that there are people who enjoy this genre and feel it's a lot easier when there are videos like this one which feature many bands who have a similar sound. Fucking moron.

This isn't even an education video either, it's just a post emo comp.

  • Well I donty mine the vid, just how you argue with people in the comments about silly genres. I mean I like this music, but the genre doesnt matter.

  • To me the genre does matter. It just comes down to effort, it just takes a small amount of it to get something as simple as genres correct. Face it, people for the most part are completely careless and completely lazy, and over time it wears on me.

  • Well, its good to know your genres, but sometimes people get a bit carried away, and I mean its important to know what emo, screamo, and post hardcore are, but this whole indie emo, post emo, emocore is a bit too far. I mean they all sound emo and stuff to me. I mean all because a person doesn't know a genre doesn't make them stupid unless they think that MCR is emo, etc.

  • Emocore is a bullshit term, the same as 'indie emo.' Never acknowledge either of those stupid terms. The only real genre you mentioned was post emo, and post emo makes a lot of sense because post emo does sound A LOT different from emo.

  • Well youre right abot the terms... hmmm youve got a point. Emo sounds more raw and hardcore.

  • there's no such thing as a "real" genre. people make them up and each one is just as valid/invalid as any other. when i was listening to these bands in the mid-to-late '90s, i never heard the term "post emo" ever. "post hardcore," on the other hand, came up all the time. still, pretty much everyone referred to the above bands as "emo" at the time, with the exception of the actual bands themselves, most of which went out of their way to let everyone know "we're not emo" in interviews.

  • Mineral - Parking lot

    they are awesome... so awesome

  • Most of the original Post Hardcore bands all but transcended Emo for the first few years, look at Fugazi for Christ sake! Drive Like Jehu had a mixture of Post Emo songs, as well as Post Hardcore songs, they never committed to either genre, therefore it's very open ended.

  • All of you are fucking retarded. There is no such fucking thing as "post emo" or "indie emo." There was hardcore. Then there was "emocore" which was the same fucking thing as hardcore. Then there was "emo" which was actually "post-hardcore" (i.e. Drive Like Jehu, ATDI, etc.) Then there was "emo" which was really indie-pop (get up kids). Now there's "emo" (i.e. "bullshit") like Alesana and Armor For Sleep. "Emo" is a stupid genre title that gets applied to whatever melodramatic kids listen to.

  • It only gets applied because not enough people protest it. And how is Emotive Hardcore (emo) the same as Hardcore? As if Indian Summer sounds anything like a band like Snapcase... those two genres are very different, sure they have the same root but that's it.

  • love cap'n jazz so so much though at the drive in are simply superb

  • ive always called this kind of music Emo Pop
