This is why Gretzky has respect outside of dumbass hockey fans, the ones screaming FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT at games. If you want to see a fight, go to a UFC match. Hockey players fight so poorly it is unwatchable.
You guys ever notice when he's alone on ice...when his teammates are changing..he'll prend he pass the puck to the other side of the rink so he would be checked..
Also he try to blind pass and give it away..he'll probably got the most give away in the NHL...another record?....LOL
No one wants to see a dude with a name like supersexi15 telling them not to watch men grabbing each other.. something doesn't add up here... seems as if you are the sluttiest man EVER XD
Gretzy was a fantastic player but He was severely protected. he wasnt really a team player basicly. But Lemieux was way better than gretzky But dont forget about Alexander Ovechkinj that kid is a beast He hits He skates And he scores My Favourite Player of al time
Guys, gretzky was good overall, but this was just sad seeing a lady byng trophy winner trying to fight. No offense to him, but he's not a fighter.....
so now everyone thinks jari kurri is a wuss because he doesnt want to fight??? if you would just walk on the street and someone would want to fight, i really think that you wouldnt
what people dont understand is hockey isnt just about having the best shot or the best stick handling. its such a mental game and no one has or will ever think the game like Gretzky did, so maybe he wasnt the most talented player but he was the smartest and thats what makes him so great. he always knew what would happen before anyone else on the ice.
That's why Gretzky's just slightly above Lemieux and Orr. Even Phil Esposito, who played with Orr during his best days, claims that nobody could see the game like Gretzky did. I'm sure that if Lemieux had played a full, healthy career, that he would've ended up with more goals than Gretzky, but no way he would've ended up with more points.
thats fucking bull shit Wayne Gretzky yes he got 2000 points its still possible someone can do that im proud Wayne s canadien and so im i and good for him but people stop treating him like a god
@peterathwal99 except Guy Lafleur, Mario Lemiuex, Brett Hull, Bobby Hull, Eric Lindross, Paul Kariya, Jaomir Jagr, that's just off the top of my head FUCK Gretzky.
@peterathwal99 The more NHL seasons there are, the more probable it is that someone will be better than Gretzky. He's in a league of his own, but unless the NHL disappears, there is bound to be someone who will surpass him.
Gretsky was a cherry picking whimp who hung out at the red line and never moved his legs. Now Trottier was the best cause he played defense as well as offense.
lemieux is a good player but wayne is the best hockey player of all times over 200 points got 500 goals in 575 games the ONLY person to get 92 goals in a season and he will be the best of all time and it wasent easier back then not by a fucking long shot
im just saying that in my opinion i like the way lemieux played better .. to me gretzky was an independant player and hockey is a team sport thats all .. its my opinion , i hate when people reply with stats and shit .. i think lemiuex was and is better than gretzky .. thats it .. my opinion .
if gretzsky never scored 1 goal in the NHL he still would be #1 in points. i think the lemieux (if healthy) vs gretzsky thing is a great debate but dont forget bobby orr he changed the game and how its played. he lead the league in scoring which is, in my opinion, harder then scoring 200 points. lemieux played later into the late 90s early 2000s and goalies pads did get much bigger along with all the hookin and holdings. something that must be said to why players dont score as much as they didB4
But if your opinion is wrong based on the facts, then why can't people respond? Someone saying they hate when people use stats...wow, what a moron. Actually, you proved yourself a moron when you said "Gretzky was an indepedent player"...he has BY FAR more assists than anyone who ever played and made all his teammates much better. Those are facts.
they're peoples opinions .. everyone has a right to one .
TO ME gretzky was an independent player like i said i dont care about the stats .. the things that ive seen gretzky do form my opinion .. like i said i dont care about stats .. thats it . my opinion .
allright after youve read that a couple times passed it to some friends and asked your mommy what to say go ahead and make you half witted reply like the one above.
part ii - ah HENRI RICHARD ELEVEN Stanley Cups. Ah, THE ENTIRE TEAM(S) from 1956-60 when Montreal won five straight cups - that's one more than the 'good one,' you bloody idiot. Hence, the entire team, by YOUR yardstick is better than the "good one."
Nor you freak, did I SAY Hodge was better than Wayne - I said Wayne would have scored no more than 50 extrapalating his pathetic plus/minus to the Bruins of the 70s. Finally, idols of your era, like Lemieux, say Orr was far the best.
idiotslikeyou - i presume that's your parent's moniker for you their son, btw. no twerp, Orr is no. 1 because the INFALLIBLE and lauded by mathematicians, plus/minus (goals when one is on the ice vs. against) says Orr is the best by a huge margin and 'Gretz' is WAY down the list.
2. The players - who knows better than the players- THE AP who don't even have a full-time hockey correspondent? YOU fool, made the benchmark YOU FOOL, that volume of stanley cups is significant. Henri Richard ...
dzanier - in fact NO ONE protected orr. Insanely the league of that era let hatchet men like Bobby Clarke slash deliberately at his knee.
Orr was never, to my knowledge EVER defended by any Bruin in the sense that they fought IN LIEU of him because he was such a "big star," a la the not so great one. and the league - NADA. they let the cheap shot artists destroy Orr's knees and hence his career.
part ii: unfortunately idiotslikeyou, the 'logic' (sic) is inseparable from the pussy - you.
you're entitled to quote sources out of context. you're entitled to fixate on meaningless stats when the object of your love, Gretzky himself has discounted his 'achievements.' but when you try to impune my character - you find like 'Grets" what happens - sometimes other MEN aren't there to protect the little boys.
Logic is spelled correctly, the same way you originally spelled it, so I'm not sure what you added 'sic' for...? Also, 'impune' means 'unpunished', so I don't know how I've 'unpunished your character', but if that's how you feel, so be it, I'll make sure I never unpunish your character again..? Also, I'm not sure which sources were quoted out of context, all those organizations I mentioned really have voted Gretzky as the best, you can look them up yourself...?
part ii, about 50 ... the same as ken hodge and wayne cashman - who COULD defend themselves.
the AP and sports illustrated simply don't UNDERSTAND the plus/minus system which countless mathematicians have 'jiggered' and guess what: Orr is alwasys no. 1 and wayne is NEVER within the top 10.
The fact that you've spent more of this 'rebuttal' trying to insult me rather than refute the facts I've presented shows that you cannot, so you've relied on ad hominem attacks. Stop talking about 'what ifs', if you wanna do that, then I'M the greatest hockey player of all time. You don't know better than the NHLPA, The Hockey News, The Associated Press, Sports Illustrated and the NHL itself! Just who are you, and what makes YOU such a better authority than these sources? Get over yourself!
idiotslikeyou - so easy to trash your inane logic, as easily as i, your mom's 1000th customer accommodated me. NUMEROUS Montreal Canadians had more stanley cups, the HOCKEY PLAYERS in a poll voted bobby orr the best player, all-time, Gretzky HIMSELF stated orr was the best - gordie howe how, an all-star TWENTY ONE TIMES ... the rebuttal of your mullet-headed 'kids' logic is soooo easy. as i said! in the 70s with real men to protect him, he would have scored about 50 goals - see part 2
Ok, so the only things you've come up with is that Howe had more all-star selections, the Canadiens won more cups than Gretzky (which, I guess makes the Montreal Canadiens a better player than Wayne Gretzky..? so easy to trash your inane logic), and that Gretzky called Orr the greatest?? This is your rebuttal against ALL THE ACCOLADES I posted?? Get outta here buddy, you're trying to get attention like a flat chick in a room full of pornstars....
theholloway1983 - it's not the fighting - though Gretzky's minimal self-defense is embarrassing it's the hitting. Gretzky was immune from hits, nor could he dish them out.
finally, the plus/minus numbers tell all - Gretzky is WAY down the list.
sorry dude, you just don't know what the hell you're talking about.
theholloway1983 - to show you how deluded and out of the know you are - 1. even Gretzky himself repeat HIMSELF has said that he would not have put up esposito like numbers if he'd played in the 70s. 2. the LEAGUE ALONE prevented Gretzsky's "avoiding hits" in his era. the rest of the league was not allowed to hit him. on the contrary if the league had prevented the bobby clarke's of the 70s from deliberately hitting the knees of the Orrs and yes, the Espositos, they'd be untouchable.
phil esposito scored 76 goals and 76 assists in 70-71,' at a time and i quote Wayne, "the league was much, much stronger than when i played.'
while Gretzky would not have been run out of the league had he played in the golden era, the early 70s - the tough men on his teams would have protected him, he would have been hammered a lot both via hard check and hard fist! also, he would have scored maybe 52-55 goals in the very best case scenario, probably closer to 50.
No, Gretz skill level, which was average even during his heyday, would have prevented 70s era players from getting hits on him, just as he did in the 80s and 90s. In fact, its a pretty good guess that Gretz would have put up even bigger numbers in the 70s than he did in his own era. A 4000 career point total wouldn't have been beyond the realm of the possible. Without a doubt, Gretz has ecliped the all time greats and actually occupies a special iconic plateau that no one in hockey ever has.
Ok, so since he is FAR from the best, please name all these other players who have achieved more than: 4 Stanley Cups, 3 Canada Cups, 9 MVPs, 10 scoring titles, 2 Playoff MVPs, 5 NHLPA MVPs, 18-time All-Star, 60 NHL records, Associated Press Athlete of the Decade, Sports Illustrated's Hockey Player of the Century, #1 on The Hockey News' Greatest Hockey Players list, and the only player to have his number retired by every team.... So, who are these guys??
Gretzky wouldn't have been squat in today's NHL! Back then, the NHL was nothing more than a big giant pick up game. Nobody played defense or hit, pretty boy Wayne was just fine with that. Ovechkin, Crosby, etc are TWICE the players he EVER was.
What's interesting here is that whenever you see a hockey fight, and it's two vs. one, a teammate will jump in to join the one. Here, however, the rest of the LA Kings team saw who Phil Sykes was fighting and I guess figured "ah, he can handle it by himself." And they were right! Gretzky & Kurri were great players, but didn't seem to have their heart in the fighting aspects of hockey.
a big part of the game is toughness. hockey is known for being the toughest sport in the world. that's one big part of gretzkys game that he had zero of! he was the greatest play maker ever not the greatest hockey player ever. people that don't know the sport think he's the greatest because he was known as the great one. great hockey players like jerome iginla, gary roberts and shanny don't need their big brother ( mcsorley and semenko ) on the ice to fight their battles for them.
if mario wasnt as injured as he was, he would've blown all of gretzky's records out of the water and we all know it. his 199 point season with what 20 games to go?
Part of what made Gretzky better than Lemieux or Orr is that he had the ability, toughness and resilience to remain healthy for his entire career. Staving off injury, even with Semenko or Mcsorely helping out is not a thing many guys can avoid.
Wayner topped 200 4 seasons bud, got 205 points in 74 games, 92 goals in one season, 50 goals in 39 games. Mario was good but he wasn't close to those numbers

BambiFilms 2 years ago
i know this is gonna be hard for you to comprehend so read this slowly...
when little kids play basket ball, and suck they lower the net to make it easier
...
still with me?
ok now if you now anything about hockey you will now that the level of ability in goalies has risen drastically
...
ok while you add two and two
which means Gretsky had it easier then modern skaters, which likewise kids with 7ft nets have it easier then people who play on official 10 foot nets

NUMEROUS Montreal Canadians had more stanley cups, the HOCKEY PLAYERS in a poll voted bobby orr the best player, all-time, Gretzky HIMSELF stated orr was the best - gordie howe how, an all-star TWENTY ONE TIMES ... the rebuttal of your mullet-headed 'kids' logic is soooo easy. as i said! in the 70s with real men to protect him, he would have scored about 50 goals - see part 2
caesarcerf 2 years ago
Ok, so the only things you've come up with is that Howe had more all-star selections, the Canadiens won more cups than Gretzky (which, I guess makes the Montreal Canadiens a better player than Wayne Gretzky..? so easy to trash your inane logic), and that Gretzky called Orr the greatest?? This is your rebuttal against ALL THE ACCOLADES I posted?? Get outta here buddy, you're trying to get attention like a flat chick in a room full of pornstars....

gretzky was the best fighter in the nhl.

Gretzky: Damn, dude, what's your problem? I fixed my mullet and had it just right before the game and you come along and messed it all up.
Sykes: Well, I don't like your hair. Someone gave me this lollipop haircut and I'm pissed.
Gretzky: Don't take it out on me. Chillax, dude.
Sykes: Tell Kurri to quit spooning me.
Gretzky: He's spooning me too, man. Just take it.
Kurri: You didn't seem to mind it in the locker room when I was Aquanetting your mullet, Wayne.
Gretzky: But we're on the ice.

theholloway1983 - it's not the fighting - though Gretzky's minimal self-defense is embarrassing it's the hitting. Gretzky was immune from hits, nor could he dish them out.
finally, the plus/minus numbers tell all - Gretzky is WAY down the list.
sorry dude, you just don't know what the hell you're talking about.
caesarcerf 2 years ago
theholloway1983 - to show you how deluded and out of the know you are - 1. even Gretzky himself repeat HIMSELF has said that he would not have put up esposito like numbers if he'd played in the 70s. 2. the LEAGUE ALONE prevented Gretzsky's "avoiding hits" in his era. the rest of the league was not allowed to hit him. on the contrary if the league had prevented the bobby clarke's of the 70s from deliberately hitting the knees of the Orrs and yes, the Espositos, they'd be untouchable.

phil esposito scored 76 goals and 76 assists in 70-71,' at a time and i quote Wayne, "the league was much, much stronger than when i played.'
while Gretzky would not have been run out of the league had he played in the golden era, the early 70s - the tough men on his teams would have protected him, he would have been hammered a lot both via hard check and hard fist! also, he would have scored maybe 52-55 goals in the very best case scenario, probably closer to 50.
caesarcerf 2 years ago
No, Gretz skill level, which was average even during his heyday, would have prevented 70s era players from getting hits on him, just as he did in the 80s and 90s. In fact, its a pretty good guess that Gretz would have put up even bigger numbers in the 70s than he did in his own era. A 4000 career point total wouldn't have been beyond the realm of the possible. Without a doubt, Gretz has ecliped the all time greats and actually occupies a special iconic plateau that no one in hockey ever has.

gretzky is overrated; skated head-down and had a league that wouldn't allow him to take clean hits. a great player FAR from 'the' greatest. FAR ...

I love Gretzky, it is ashame he couldn't have played for the Redwings. Gretzky is a lot better than Howe.

Gretzky wouldn't have been squat in today's NHL! Back then, the NHL was nothing more than a big giant pick up game. Nobody played defense or hit, pretty boy Wayne was just fine with that. Ovechkin, Crosby, etc are TWICE the players he EVER was.

crosby sucks dick and gretzky and mario made hockey of what it is today
ADIOfan8 2 years ago
What's interesting here is that whenever you see a hockey fight, and it's two vs. one, a teammate will jump in to join the one. Here, however, the rest of the LA Kings team saw who Phil Sykes was fighting and I guess figured "ah, he can handle it by himself." And they were right! Gretzky & Kurri were great players, but didn't seem to have their heart in the fighting aspects of hockey.

a big part of the game is toughness. hockey is known for being the toughest sport in the world. that's one big part of gretzkys game that he had zero of! he was the greatest play maker ever not the greatest hockey player ever. people that don't know the sport think he's the greatest because he was known as the great one. great hockey players like jerome iginla, gary roberts and shanny don't need their big brother ( mcsorley and semenko ) on the ice to fight their battles for them.

hungmaster2 3 years ago
if mario wasnt as injured as he was, he would've blown all of gretzky's records out of the water and we all know it. his 199 point season with what 20 games to go?
MyRaPeIsHaRsH 3 years ago
Part of what made Gretzky better than Lemieux or Orr is that he had the ability, toughness and resilience to remain healthy for his entire career. Staving off injury, even with Semenko or Mcsorely helping out is not a thing many guys can avoid.

Wayner topped 200 4 seasons bud, got 205 points in 74 games, 92 goals in one season, 50 goals in 39 games. Mario was good but he wasn't close to those numbers
