  • oh yeh. i was talking about pedigree dogs exposed three years on incase you're wandering what i was on about.

  • ahh my god i can't remmeber the last time i cryed as much as i cried at the footage of the Cavalier. i can;te evn explain it , its absolutlye behone me HOW people can think what the dog looks like is more important that how it functions. And that woman said she would rather a puppy without all the "desired looks" get put down even if it were completely healthy, saying they have to go to a vet that will just quietly put the, dogs downs my jaw dropped ! WTF no thats fucking unexecptable..

  • You know i really think there should be a law. That states that people who make there dogs go into dog show. Should once a year be force to get naked. Run around a little rings. Have someone feel up there genitals. And then Judge them on there looks. I think the dog would see that as sweet revenge.

  • People who do this shit, are compensating for their own inadequacies. Dumb.

  • Can't we start out-crossing to help get rid of these problems? I believe the Friesian horse breed is allowing some approved Arabian horses to be used in crosses to boost heat tolerance. I'm not as familiar with dog breeding, but can't something like this be done?

  • che merda cazzo, la gente non capisce veramente niente

  • Saw this in my class for a few weeks ago and all of my mates got angry...It's horrible ._.

  • couldn't watch past 0:17 sorry.. but it reminded me of when I had to take my 15 year old siberian husky to the vet to be put down due to screaming aching arthritus, bad hip, and stomach pains. (MAY HE RIP) the vet just calmly told he he wouldn't feel a thing and immediatly after injecting that needle of death watching my favourite husky shake and twitch and howl in pain as his last few seconds of life while looking at ME. Thanks this actually made me tear up typing this. RIP Jake. ILU

  • this film should be translatd to other languages

  • How can ownes see their dogs like this and my sentiments echo NEBESHIKU above, I have a GSD cross whose dominant side comes out GSD but I am afraid with wrist arthritis. God forgive you humans who would give their life for a red rosette

    You should all be shot

  • i felt almost like crying seeing that show GSD. That is not how a German Shepherd should look or move, not at all. His hips will fail him, probably before he is ten years old. He will suffer and his life will be cut short. GSDs are a working breed, they are not a toy for us to play with and manipulate into whatever we desire them to look like. That is a shame, a damn crying shame.

  • Thank you for this documentary. This needs to be heard, it needs to be known. So many great breeds have been destroyed by careless breeding. Please, think before you buy. Get your puppy or adult dog from a rescue, or from a reputable breeder who's puppies reflect a historical standard for their breed, and whose parents are health and temperament tested. Good breeders don't breed for profit. They breed because they LOVE THEIR BREED! They breed because they want to IMPROVE their breed!

  • i have a siberian husky whos a pedigree:(

  • I'm pissed that these people allow their dogs to live through the pain, the boxer, cavalier etc. If she's in so much pain why do you let her suffer?

  • Mariuspacpac you cannot honestly think that the Romanian way of keeping dogs is ok - there is widespread suffering among the animals in Romania, levels of vaccinations / rountine medical treatment is low, and most dogs would prefer NOT to be left out on the yard in the winter. Good that you don't have so many inbread dogs, but I personally believe that EU aid to Romania should be suspended due to their record on animal cruelty.

  • I am from Romania and here we do not consider dogs to be children. We see dogs for what they are and that is animals. We don't dress then in little skirts and all that shit and we let them stay outside in the yard in the middle of the winter to guard us.But we love our dogs and we respect them for the job they do for us.I am not the kind of animal entuziast that puts dogs before people but if i could have my way i would break the backs of GS breeders.A great they fucked up playing god...FUCK YOU!!

  • @mariuspacpac ...What you say is absolutely right....

  • when they showed that dog that got put down i cryedd

  • :< I'll never look at "purebreed" dogs the same again ever.

  • I spent years doubting this sort of criticism, until I earned enough time amongst show and field breeders in my breed (Beagle). The show people were profoundly better, and many genuinely did breed for the overall betterment, but not nearly enough. Amongst breeders who have owned/bred/ handled dogs in the Top 10, I have PERSONALLY known FIRSTHAND those who bred epileptics together, pumped out pups & perpetuated cardiac and orthopedic issues. Disgraceful.

  • I have a purebred dog, but he was from a shelter. I didn't know he was a purebred at the time, but I love him all the same :) He doesn't have any problems, thank God.

  • I have a Lab/Doberman mix. Great dog, she loves everyone she meets. I asked my vet about purebreds. He said that they make up 80% of his business for a variety of reasons. Breeding through a narrow gene pool being the primary cause of chronic illnesses. I go to pet rescues and l find a happy go lucky dog that looks healthy. I highly recommend it.

  • Grotesque.

  • When money and ego are involved, nothing surprises me. :(

  • That woman with the Cavalier should NOT have a collar on that dog! My cavie has mild syri symptoms and she wears a step in harness.

  • Well ,..most breeds are in big trouble!

But the bull dog , is actually the one who's destroyed!

By people who think it's nice to have a dog looking like that!

Really sad, and the breeders are the ones who are in for the money, most of the buyers are the ones with the grief & sadness and the ones that spent all their money on their beloved pet!

There should be a law against that!

  • This is why I own gamedogs bred for performance, not looks. That judge is the most ignorant and uncapable man I have seen in a long time. He's just repeating KC regulations on the GSD breed, because he doesn't know anything about them and wants to be part of something. If he wouldn't be a judge he'd probably be a garbageman. I can assure you any working GSD will run circles around the show GSD in everything it does.

  • This is why I preffer muts.

  • so its not breed standard? so what motherfker?? at least it can run and walk normally and doesnt look like a frog

  • I am not for showing dogs or breeding them until they gain health problems, but what makes the show dogs so sought after? What do the breeders gain other than a highly prized blue ribbon? Do they get rich off these dogs? Is it pride? Why do the dogs suffer for show rings?

  • Hmmm...I believe totally in all of this, but not all breeders are like this and it doesn't mean we should breed muts/etc

  • This is horrible.

As a human "mutt" myself, I always found the idea of some standard of "purity" and physical perfection rather distasteful. Now we see it's also cruel.

  • This has done it for me. I wanted a purebred Shiba Inu, but I'll be honest, I've seen some really unhealthy ones out here in America. I can't say for sure what it's like in Japan, the breed's home nation, but I think I'll opt to adopt as well. This is really scary.

I'm worried for my Corgi. I have to admit, he's cursed with the worst digestive system ever, and it might be due to anything that came from the parents' lines. I actually question the Queen of England's corgis...

  • Without commenting on the thesis of this documentary, why isn't that dog in constant pain put out of her misery?

  • I have watched this documentary over and over for two years, and still, I cannot watch that poor tricolored Cavalier without crying.

  • I had to skip though some of the video... the dog show is the equivalent to some Special Olympic Beauty Pageant, with mother nature looking on and crying in shame

  • "Mutts" may not win any beauty contests but they are obviously far healthier. My friend has a working type GSD but for awhile I wondered why he didn't have the typical sloping back. Now I'm very glad he doesnt and I'm very glad my grandparents beagle is healthy.

  • Yes there are more important things this video shows but holy shit, check out the RSPCA's offices! Not bad!

  • It would be wonderful if Max von Stephanitz would come back from the dead so that he could ring the neck of Terry Hannan and the other ass hole show GSD breaders. For them to say that today's GSD anatomy is correct is so idiotic. None of the wild canids have that kind of back because it is not of ANY use, the only thing it is usuful is to go along with the whim of those stupid breaders!

  • @NEBESHIKU

Agreed fully. The sloping back is a serious fault in my eyes as well. That's why I hate conformation show. I'm sorry, but dogs were not meant to look fashionable. They're to serve as a WORKING purpose for man, not entertainment purpose. Ironic isn't it? Poorly bred humans breeding poor quality dogs.

  • @Metroid4ever LOL! Your last remark ("Poorly bred humans...") was so funny!

  • @NEBESHIKU/watch?v=Vy9TP4BRYsg

  • It's not just breeding unhealthy dogs, it's warping the breed so that they're completely dysfunctional to fit a so-called "standard" that the Kennel Club created, and in modern times, mind you, as the breed's looks have changed from just 20-50 years ago. The GSD can't walk straight, the Pug can't breathe, the Bull Dog can't give natural birth, the Dachshund has back issues because they shrunk their legs to bits. This is cruel and inhumane! Guardians of the breed, my ass! It's destruction!

  • Terry Hannan is so stupid, none of the show ring Germanshepherds can do the work for wich they were created! He is just so full of sh***t. The correct version is the working one!

  • and to me...this all seems like bad owners....who would keep that poor dog alive if its in so much pain?! really? thats just cruel!

and if she wouldve properly researched the breed and asked her breeder if they knew of the disease in the breed line...they couldve prevented this....and if the breeder wasnt going to answer every question they asked they shouldve found another breeder!

and if everyone gets mutts (like everyone here thinks)then how would we ever know what diseases they might have?

  • Oh my..Now I have absolutely different view .. I never though that dogs can suffer so much and from such a terrible dissease that they even doesn't look like dogs anymore. Sad.

  • This is SO ridiculous, and reading the comments, I can only feel sad about how fast people fall for this BULLSHIT. Mutts are NOT healthier than purebreds. Most show breeders health test their dogs. Most of them also work their dogs. These people made a stupid, stupid generalization and people fell for it. Sad, really.

  • @TheDawgNinja

like i said in another video:

the insurance companies have highly qualified ppl who specialise in statistics, maths and acturial science, who have decided to charge more for insuring pedigree dogs and less for mutts.that in itself is ENOUGH proof and evidence that pedigrees get more disease and die earlier...case is closed...

  • @koala8 Facts are facts. Insurance can believe in whatever they want, but the fact is that mutts aren't healthier than purebreds. *sight*

  • @TheDawgNinja

so ur saying that insurance companies are making their pricing decisions on a whim? that's unrealistic...

purebreed dogs must be more riskier for them to insure that's why they charge higher premiums...and that risk must be quantifiable and measurable..or else they wouldnt have made the conscious decision to charge more...they dont make commercial decisions on "beliefs" they make it on measurable facts...these are COMPANIES who care about $

  • @TheDawgNinja so the vets are making this up

  • @TheDawgNinja you like the Kennel Club Board members are living proof of what inbreeding makes to animals! They turn out not only sick but beyound STUPIT! Guess Mendel was wrong and you were right... Yeah! Right!

  • now i know why breeders are so argumentative about "designer" dogs....theyre probably scared that more and more ppl prefer mutts like the popular labradoodle and puggle...

  • @koala8 I'm not a breeder and I agree that designer breeds are total crap. Why spend money on a mutt when you can adopt one at a shelter...

  • @TheDawgNinja

similarly I could say the same thing...why spend money on a pedigree dog when you can adopt one at a shelter?

  • :'(

  • the people are dick heads keepin those dogs alive in that conditch for nearly 2 years there sick

  • why do the human race fuck up everythin why cant they just leave everythin alone

  • i coudnt bare seeing my dog suffer like that, not able to do anything for it...:´(

  • There's nothing wrong with Purebreed dogs its the Show dogs, and the inbreed dogs. Every dog has its own problems because of domestication, getting a mutt will not fix the problem the only true healthy dog is a dog breed with a wolf or close to wolf descent. So if your tryin to avoid health problems all together get a wolf dog, cause every dog mix or pure has it own problem.

  • That little spaniel was like that for "18 months!" Put it to F****ING sleep! Are you mad! If your dog has seizures and is shaking all over the place all the time. Bring it to the vet and buy a better dog next time!

  • how many $ is 10,million pounds?

  • @ashleyim18 probs about 5 or 6

  • @ashleyim18 no sorry bout 15 to 20

  • :'(

  • the dogs that are suffering this much MUST be put to sleep!!!! it breaks my heart but we created this problem and we must spare them from the nightmare. in a way they shouldnt even exist.

  • i love my english bulldog, i got him from the shelter. his nose isnt as squished as other bulldogs and he's taller, so hopefully he will live longer than those mutant ones.

  • The German Shepherd is the most shocking in my opinion. I don't believe a dog, especially a GSD, should look like that. my friend has a purebred GSD who looks like the working one and she is absolutely beautiful.

  • @sakuransasuke223 I know I wanted to hit that guy who said the showdog look is the right one and not the working class one. That was just ridiculous, who in their right mind seeing how that one walks can say that that one is right.

  • the brain is like a size 10 foot that's been shoved into a size 6 shoe it doesn't fit! .. shocking

  • its mainly in england, they keep doing inbreeding..

  • Well if you buy from a puppy mill yes, they will be fucked up but if you buy them from reputable breeders ie. champion dog breeders then theyll be fine.

  • @FatBoyUKDubstep

lies, all lies, champion dog breeders often inbreed their dogs, causing more sickness :\ its all the same.

  • And that's why you get either a rescue dog, or find a breeder that actually cares about the health of their dogs... jeez. There ARE breeders that work their dogs and value mental health and physical soundness. This video is a bit biased to show the extreme side of conformation showing, which is sick for sure. Mixed breeds aren't immune to health problems either. I've owned both mixed and purebred and I love them all, because they are all DOGS.

  • This is what happens when breeders and consumers only care about the look of the dog. It's really important to choose a breeder, both who breeds pedigree and mixed breeds who puts health and temperament first.

  • This is seriously fucked up man. Shelter animals FTW.

  • breeding dogs purely for looks and profit is just plain wrong. pure breed dogs have many many health problems that are often deadly. why would people choose to keep breeding these dogs when they know they will suffer and eventually die from something that can be prevented. i have two mutts and they are very healthy, have never had any problems with either of them. some shelter dogs do have issues, but it's nothing compared to these poor dogs who are bred to death.

  • @ravenangel24 Correction; SOME purebred dogs have health issues. It's true some of them have, but the ones that you see in this video are dogs who came from stupid breeders who did NO health testing. Most show breeders work and do health testing.

  • pound dogs do come with issues but i perfer to save a life

  • thanks for sharing this video. I hope it makes a change

  • You have to keep in mind that this video doesn't scrutinize the breeders they bought from. There are good breeders and there are far more bad breeders. Where the breeding pair genetically tested prior to breeding for inherited conditions? OFA? Eyes and hearing checked? Proper temperament? While it's tragic what is happening to our purebred dogs, it's important to remember that the bad breeders outnumber the good ones, and they don't check for this shit before they breed.

  • pound dogs are the best no health issues

  • @stuckinafishbowl There is no guarantee that "pound dogs have no health issues" All dogs are prone to health issues.

This is why people should educate themselves before purchasing any dog. Find an ethical breeder who breeds for health as well as looks. Not money.

  • this dude terry hannad neeed's to be jumped on head.

  • This video is complete total bullshit. Not all purebred dogs have the problems spotlighted here. Damn.

  • @shiranui43 True, but you cannot deny how the look of certain breeds has changed over the years. Many breeders mate with brother and sister dogs which causes MAJOR problems. We wouldn't do it as humans, yet breeders seem to think it is fine to mate that way with their dogs. Everyone is better off adopting a mongrel from the shelter.

  • @shiranui43 AMEN

  • A pedigree dog cost an eye of your face, but when you bought a pedigree puppy you expect a healtly dog rised in good places (you know they don't come of one of those F*ing puppy farms).

A dog is for nothing more to make you company, for some people is like get a new family member... That's why you not expect to loose it at two years or less just because a genetical dissease! C'mon! That's as unfair as it sounds!

  • This video shouldn't be flagged as inappropriate. It may be tough to watch, but people should not be restricted from seeing this because of their age.

  • @infraredeye47 It's not got people that flagged it, there are those who don't want us to see this so they try to block it from as many people as possible.

  • that family is crule to keep that dog alive

  • Omg, this is just horrible. Why would people make animals suffer like that? ):

  • That tricolor Cavalier always makes me cry.

  • So sad and disturbing watching that Kings Charles Cavalier suffer like that.

    Dog breeders are retarded.

  • I have to say, I've always had rescue. Not because I want to be all high & mighty as others might claim, but because I feel it's the humane thing to do. Some of my friends chose to keep pedigreed dogs, and that's there choice and I never give them a hard time over it, but I have to say, they always have WAY more health issues & temperment issues with their dogs than I've ever had with mine.

  • Shoot that dog!

  • This is way I never brought a pedigree dog. I have a lovely little cross breed dog (jack Russell/poodle) Which pedigree breeders sneer at, but at least he's less likely to get these sort of problems!!!! Cross breeds are the best!

  • Here in Australia we also have long quarantine periods - probably even more stringent that the UK. BUT sperm can be sent around the world much easier than a dog can.

  • This documentary is so one sided and unbalanced it is almost laughable. And the BYBers and pet stores quote this when defending their 'hybrid' mutts.

  • it is nothing but a shame what man has done to the wolf

  • Do pedigreed cats have the same problems?

  • @doobiesmoke15 yeah ofcourse

  • @R3spaWn89 Like what?

  • @doobiesmoke15 much less as they have been bred less extensively

  • That I have seen is appalling! I have a mongrel and I am so happy to have a healthy, happy dog. Would we chose to have beautiful but sick children? I don´t think so! Why is it different with dogs- they are like our children. I would like to ask those who invent these crazy norms for dogs`appearance " Would you like to have skin hanging around your body? "

  • @MissCat61 That is just so crazy to say dogs are like our children! They are animals not humans. Humans that humanize animals have no lifes and too much time on thier hands. That aside, animals should be taken care of for ethical reasons. They are and will always be animals and not humans but we humans have to make sure they are healthy. Even when i don't consider my beloved Diva a person, i rather her be healthy than beutiful and sick.

  • @NEBESHIKU . I don´t think that it is grazy. I have two grown up children who live their own lives. They don´t depend on me any more. On the conrary, my dog will always depend on me as a young child. Yes, we are humans, but I think than the humankind think too much of itself. Any living creature has the same right to live on this earth as any human being. the difference is that we (humans) should have more responsibility.

  • @MissCat61 I hope that you have a wonderful relation with your grown up children and that you don't have to hide behind your dogs because you can't have real human relationships. The truth is that people who think like that have too much time on their hands. If u had 2 farm your own food u wouldn't have time 2 be thinking on the rights of dogs. When you crush a roach under your shoe do you think it has the same right to live? I think animals should be taken care of but never to be seen as humans

  • @NEBESHIKU Of course I don´t need to grow my own food, I live in the society which has adopted the idea that mankind is the owner of the earth, that´s why people play God all the time. If we had to farm our own food we would be fighting for our survival on the same terms as the rest of the animals on this planet. In this case there would be no room for dogs with such appalling faults. And maybe the whole planet wouldn´t be in danger because of the growth of human population and climate changes.

  • @MissCat61 well that is what a lot of people on the planet do, not every one is as lucky to be able to go to the super market and get food and have SO much time in their hands that they start seeing pet animals as humans. If one didn't have so much free time in ones hand one wouldn't have room for dogs that don't have a working end.

  • @MissCat61 My mum had a mongrel when she was young and it lived till it was 18...and thats in human years!

  • My theory is that they worked so hard to breed the heart, knee and hip problems out of the breed they went to far and the disease exploded due to the strict breeding as the gene pool was limited.

  • thats it.

    I'm becoming a vet sergon.

    $10 mill a week.

    what a fc-uk in rort

  • I have a mutt(read: lovely, smart, cute crossbreed). She is very super! I recomend crossbreeds. If You can then take them from pound(i saved mine from street).

I feel bad for everything mankind has done to animals. I feel bad that I cant do anything! Some people repulse me!! I cant understand what makes pedigree/breed dog better then a cross breed? I just cant understand. Is it Shows? Sorry people but this is sick!! Is this normal that dog just f**king die? 'Cause You want a attractive dog?!

  • There isn't very much to say on the other side of "inbreeding on a large scale causes health issues." The same can be said for a brother and sister having children who, in turn, procreate with one another. If it isn't right for a human, it surely isn't for any other living creature.

  • Get a mutt, a mixed breed dog, like a Sato or something, they dont die so easily and resist illness more than purebreeds---I've had dogs all my life this kind of dog

  • This is just scary.... A whole new reason to opt to adopt.

  • my hybrid dog not pure from the road lives more than 19years old. Only seen the vets twice in his lifetime.

  • @miinganharmony it can still be pedigree if u adopt

  • I don't know what goes in the UK but in australia a lot of German Shepherd breeders are breeding for 'straight back' dogs with 0 hip and back scroes. Which means the dogs don't have such slanted back ends like that. and they can actually stand up

  • My dog is a GSD/Belgian Shepherd cross and she was bred as a working dog rather than for looks (her brothers are now being trained for the police force). Dogs bred for looks rather than work tend to make poorer pets IMHO because of the health problems from too much in-breeding.

  • Comment removed

  • I love GSDs, and the section on the breed just made me cry. Who the **** do they think they are fooling? Those dogs can't walk normally!!

  • ichiKits, the CH Cavalier "Rollo", bred 26+ times even though he had syrinxes down his spine (syringomyelia) was bred by a show breeder and was continued on from by some of the top winning breeders in the breed. If you'd like I'll supply the registered names of countless more CKCS from CH lines and bred by show breeders that have symtomatic SM. I would not matter if one videod was from a BYB or not, SM is in show lines.

  • ...and I should also mention backyard breeders a.k.a byb, as they are no better then puppy farms.

If no one can understand why the two mentioned are such a big problem, pls look it up and research for yourself.

However I agree that this "doco" was very one-sided and that they had never mentioned if the CKC was bought from registered breeder. For all we know the dog could have come from a byb.

I am keeping an open mind about this, since there is always another sideto the story.

  • Comment removed

  • After reading a couple of these comments, I am so disgusted on what was put up on here.

Yes there are problems, and yes "SOME" breeders should be checked themselves.

However not every single breeder is like that, and absolutely NO ONE has the right to say that they do not love their dogs.

But for some reason people seem to think that mixes or mongrels are more healthy. That is not always the truth.

Which is one of the biggest reasons why puppy farms have been mentioned so many times...

  • I agree. I mean geez. Most of these people seem to just have a prejudice against pure breed dogs. I've rescued dogs AND cats before from the pound.

But I also have a pure breed pug. What can I say? I specifically wanted a pug dog. I don't show him and I bought him from a nice girl who's pug just had puppies. What is wrong with that?

He is by far the most well mannered, sweetest and funniest dog I've ever owned.

He doesn't have anymore health issues than any mutt I've owned before.

  • Being a owner of both pedigree dogs and crossmixed dogs, I can see why this is a big problem.

But that does not mean I am going to start condeming breeders. Not all breeders breed dogs just for the look alone, some actually do required testing to be sure diseases are not being passed down.

As for mixed-breeds, they too have the chance of getting inherited diseases.

N.B Never buy a puppy from pet stores as 98% of puppies come from puppy mills.

  • I've had crossmixed dogs all my life and they work for me better than purebreeds

  • The whole reason kennel clubs were invented was to perfect a breed and create a standard of it. These people are turning it into nothing but a beauty pageant. It's sickening and disturbing and needs to be stopped. The foundation of the clubs has fallen out and now they're nothing but a shallow pool of vain fools destroying perfect breeds.

  • yea the boxer with epilepsy was jsut to much

  • This is disgusting!

Just get a mutt dog, people! We always had mutts and never regret it. Healthy dogs with great personality.

  • Also, my auntie has a sharpei, a very designer, pedigree dog. It has A LOT of problems, i feel so sad for it because she won't put it down :(

  • I LOVE animals, we had a Miniature Pincher x Chihuahua (Who was sadly killed) and a purebred boxer, we are not a fan of pedigree dogs, we got our boxer from someone who couldn't handle her as they had a new baby.

At first I was pretty shocked to see a boxer on this documentary, but not surprised. So far our girl has shown no signs of any kind of health problem (Thank god)

This documentary really does make me sad, animals are so innocent, it is us that screws them up.

  • They "distroyed" them 'eh?

  • LOL WINCEST

  • Four minutes in and I'm crying. What are we doing to these little darlings? Oh God. I'm so glad, so so glad, that I've been a moggie and mongrel lover my entire life.

  • Thanks very much for posting this program. I watched it on TV in Australia tonight and am quite disgusted at what goes on in the breeding world. I'm just glad my doggie is a pound puppy/mutt!

  • This is going to be broadcast on ABC1 tonight. I want to be informed on how we treat our 'best friend'.

  • I'd rather pick up a mongrel street hound and give it a good life than have a fetish over a pure breed. Humans are f*cked up

  • I find mongrels are usually one-in-a-million dogs that you won't find anywhere else, and they're thankful for the love and let you know it. Usually very strong dogs, too.

  • Thankyou, WALLE9000! I am currently looking into getting a dog and brought a magazine (Dogs Today - Sept 09). In there was an article by Jemima Harrision with reference to the programe PDE. Today I searched it on Youtube but had to create an account to view it. Why is this? Anyway I now know a mongral/cross is the only option for me and my son, so thankyou again.

  • What I am disputing is the fact that this program condems all breeders by basically saying we dont care about our breeds when this is not true. Most breed clubs work towards individual health schemes, some even giving grants for testing. This program does not show any accredited breeders side of the story, it is one-sided and playing on the ignorant masses

  • I don't think they are referring to all breeders. Just those that breed dogs to be asthetically pleasing and to fit certain criteria to the detriment of the animals health. I trully don't believe responsible breeders would willingly harm their animals, perhaps they aren't even aware of the illnesses they are breeding into these animals. Ever thought of that?

  • What a load of bulls**t!

Caevat Emptor - "buyer beware". So basically these people do not do any research on the breeds they want, and then cry out "we werent told about this" Did you even ask??! ALL breeds can suffer from health problems, including crossbreds. If you buy from a responsible breeder then the chances of problems occuring are reduced. There are responsible breeders out there, but would you buy a house without having a survey done, I think not!!

  • weesgee20, I don't know if you are aware of this but some breed clubs deliberately do not admit the difficulties in their breeds and therefore the pet buyers have no way of knowing. SM in Cavs was identified in 1997, and was not listed as a difficulty by the clubs on any club sites until after 2005 - and only after the fuss made by Carol Fowler and other pet owners. The AKC Cavalier club still REFUSES to publish the heart protocol so buyers have no idea to search out a breeder following it.

  • I breed and show both Alaskan Malamutes and chihuahuas, both can have health problems. I researched both breeds extensively and then found a breeder who could verify all their stock were health tested. I looked at both pros and cons of each breed.

  • You are responsible then. At least you had the knowledge to know what to investigate. Would you know what illnesses to investigate in a budgie? I do but I wouldn't have a clue about dogs.

But again, you were smart enough to find healthy dogs. But how did the dogs plagued with illness and genetic abnormalities come to be? Not all breeders are honourable. What about those who breed bitches to death. I know they are the minority, but this doco focusses on the minority. Not responsible breeders.

  • There shouldn't BE any cons in a healthy dog! A dog is usually born healthy and hale, and other than your usual dropping fur or pooping where it shouldn't, that's it until it reaches old age. Breed obsessed people seem to find this concept entirely foreign!

  • Are you serious??! The fact is EVERY species on planet earth can suffer from some type of ailment or another. To say a dog should be born completely illness free and never suffer from any illness is, bulls***t. Its like trying to say a healthy human baby cannot develop chickenpox or cancer in later life. Genetics determine alot but NOT everything. There are no garuntees in life. I can say all my dogs are health tested and even a monochrid male in my ownership wll never be bred from, csn you??

  • You know, I could go to the trouble to argue with you, but if you're not even on top of the fact that these dogs have a limited gene pool and hence ASTRONOMICALLY HIGH chances of suffering from these debilitating conditions, then there's no point. It'd be like arguing with a wall.

  • The genetically affected dogs were bred because of lack of irresponsibility. Pedigree dogs aren't the problem here. Hey, I have an idea! How about we research genetic defects in dogs and buy puppies whose parents have been tested and are free from those defects! Maybe that would solve this problem... but no, since I own ONE pedigree dog who happens to be healthier than my mutts because I bought him from a RESPONSIBLE breeder, I must be insanely stupid.

  • Im doing a project on pedigree dogs, hope you guys dont mind if i use some of your coments to put on my research! i felt stupid that i could not see this problem in front of me, i spoke to some breeders and maybe i chose the good ones, because they test their dogs and they always have done, well now they have too because the kennel club felt ashamed, but you know the problem is human vanity and how nothing is ever perfect to me animals are already extraodinary enough.
