The song was written ages ago for Britney Spears as a response to Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me a River'. However Britney didn't want to start a feud and decided to go with 'Toxic' instead and so Rachel got the song. It fits perfectly with how their relationship ended and to 'Cry Me a River', so I would have loved to hear Britney sing the songs.

Plus, a lot of singers are just singers, not songwriters so as long as they do their job and sing well, I don't think there's much of a problem. And a lot of times when artists do covers it's not in the same style as the original.
