Nicely put! It's frustrating, I think what we need to change is to make the party with the majority of votes in a minority government unable to call a new election until the regularily appointed time, and to somehow change the vote of no confidence so that it can't be abused. Hopefully this will make the minority govenrment focus more on getting things done than getting ready for the next election every six months.
actually in America we elect individuals, parties are NOT part of the US constitution beleive it or not,by the way I agee this is easer to understand using puppets

Get rid of Quebec for good. Speak English and forget your so called culture. Frogs have no respect for Canada,... but take all they can from the Federal Government
Get the fuck out of Canada Quebecer! We dont need your stupid french frog culture, Canada is great enough without you
ONLY FOUR FINGERS! Did you give one to Haarper, I did ? A tip Mr. Puppet- In Canada we elect Individual members, they form parties- The Governor General in a Minority gives the largest group 'FIRST DIBS' on forming government. Minority Governments are APPOINTED by the GG, with the understanding they maintain MAJORITY Support of the HOUSE OF COMMONS aka- the CONFIDENCE of the HOUSE to which he is responsible.
Don't let Harper 'pull the wool' over your eyes with talk of a COUP.
Dear God...and you wonder why (or perhaps have your heads stuck up your butts and you don't know) people think we Canadians are boring? Take this lame video down and put it back up when you've got something funny to say!
A coalition is completely legal... Just as legal as Harper getting the Governor General to sign off on a random election in hopes of snagging a majority.... wasting shitloads of tax payers money in the process... and failing. That act alone is reason for a vote of confidence... and Harper calling for prorogue during the middle of an economic crisis is yet another. The opposition parties are simply doing what they feel is necessary to keep Harper from ruining Canada's economy.
It's not a coup, so please don't call it that; a coup is an illegal seizure of power from a government. The opposing parties forming coalition government is completely legal.
Also, our election process is fucked up: 820,855voters elected 27 Conservative Albertan MPs, but over 940,000 people voted for the Green Party, and they didn't get a single seat! If that isn't a sign that something's wrong with the first-past-the-post system, I don't know what to tell you. We need an electoral reform.
Building a Democratic, Pluralistic Society is a very difficult thing to build on the scale that modern nations are trying to build them. No Democracy has ever been as large as America's, Britian's, Canada's, France's,or Australia's etc. We got some stuff wrong, we're not perfect. But, we also got a WHOLE LOT of VERY important stuff very very right. I hate America's politics as much as you hate yours, but in the end: VIVA LA DEMOCRACY!
The last time this happened it was to bring in conscription, which resulted in resentment by the Quebecois who didn't want it, which in turn resulted in some of separatist sentiments in Quebec.
I think the Governor General should suspend parliament because they were going to go on their Christmas break anyway this month.
After all, the budget would be tabled in less than a month anyway, so where's the rush ?
Well, it looks like our GG is a wimp. She's gone ahead and told Harper he can hold off on his confidence motion until January. This is so stupid. We'll be right back in the same boat again, except that Harper will have time to paint the Quebecois as evil Separatists who planned the whole thing to split up the country. And nothing will be done about the economy until then. This is so stupid.
We're in the last month of the current fiscal period. Nothing could be done anyway. AND the House Of Commons was going to go on break anyway on the 12th, at the end of the session.
We need more education. People need to be taught that our political system is NOT the American one. When you vote for your MP, you do give him/her/it the permission to do what the Liberals and NDP are doing right now. This is not going against the people's vote/will. This is going against the people's misconceptions. Big difference.
yeah it's true. the conservatives are calling this "illegal", but believe it or not, this is just how the parliamentary system works. so, i'm in major agreement with you. people truly need to be educated in politics.

It's good that Canadians have the ability to kick out the PM if he's doing a shitty job. If we had Bush we could've got rid of him.

Honestly, as much as I like our tradition, we should probably remove the Queen from our system.
But seriously, the Bloc Quebecois being part of a ruling coalition?
