@Scottykilmer my front sound funny. When I turned it side to side while in braking or idle it shakes and vibrates and make a noise. Any idea what it could be?
@cedricfjackson bad wheel bearings often do that, but jack up the car first and pull on the tires to see if other things are worn, as in my video "how to check out your car's suspension"
@scottykilmer nice video, i might have to do this cause when I drive and are accelerating past 45 to 55 it's starts to make a loud vibrating noise but stops when I let off the gas. If it's not the bearing can you please lemme know what it.
@ArchMageDashi could be a wheel bearing, try my swaying back and forth trick to see if the noise changes. If it doesn't, could be something else like a worn CV axle.
Hey scotty, I've got a 99 mustang and I need to replace the transmission output shaft seal, would it be smart to do it myself or should i just spend the extra $ and bring it to a shop?
My car makes a weird humming noise, almost like the noise you get when you rub your finger around on a crystal glass, just deeper. Would that be a wheel bearing?
@scottykilmer it is louder when I'm gong faster, but its not really loud, if I have the radio on, I can't hear it. It's hard to explain the noise. As I'm driving its not a constant nose at the same volume, when I am going the same speed its goes from quiet to louder to quiet over and over, thats why it reminded me of when people rub their finger around a crystal glass. If its not a bearng do you have an idea as to what it might be?
@scottykilmer Hey, So I recorded the noise today, when I turn the steering wheel it stops the noise, only when I'm going straight and it stops as soon as I touch the brakes. But starts again once I release them. It won't le tme post the link to the recording though :/

@Roy77Even It's stripped then, and that's a load of fun. I try to cut them off with a grinder most of the time, some guys will try a nut splitting tool you can buy, Scotty
Scotty, I have an 88 Daihatsu Charade. I tried to replace the rear brake drums and shoes but noticed that the bearings are pressed into the drum on the front and the back. I know the easy way is to buy new ones but they cost $25 each. How can I remove them without damaging them and then installing them on the new drums. Thanks.

hi Scotty, is it possible to drive a car without a stabilizer bar link....i wanted to remove the compressor from my nissan maxima 97 and I found this part hanging...is it safe to drive?
I had the same noise coming from my leaking cv joint on both front sides, i took one wheel off, with the ebrake on, put it in drive and saw that the noise wasn't the bearing.
I had the same noise coming from my leaking cv joint on both sides, i took one wheel off, with the ebrake on, put it in drive and saw that the noise wasn't the bearing.
@tonystewartracingfan A lot of weight on them, and a not so hot GM design stresses them. BE sure to use quality oem bearings too, the cheap chinese made ones often crap out really early. Scotty
Scott - I wanted to check if my wheel bearing is bad because it makes a lot of noise when going about 35mph. My car is a Toyota Tercel '93 and I can't seem to be able to take off the brake drum. I tried your methods, and others online...but to no avail. Do you know if there's anything special to do with this car? Thank you very much in advanced.
The guys at the shop are costing me a fortune for the shop, I don't want it. :) :)
@cssgenie that brake drum has two holes in the drums on the outside, you screw small bolts in there and it will make the drum pop off. Do it all the time, look for the two opposite holes that are threaded. Scotty
@scottykilmer I saw your methods and wanted to try it. The problem is that the brake drum doesn't have those holes on it to put in the bolt and screw them out. :(
HI Scotty....could you direct me to a video on how to replace a right side rear view mirror on a 2005 ford ranger 4wd xtra cab? i smashed it into my house this winter on ice. thanks.
I have an 04 Freestar that makes a tinny, rattling noise when going over bumps in the frint left wheel. Is this a wheel bearing issue? It also clicks when making hard left turns so im guessing the CV axle is worn out. The other thing is I did a 4 wheel brake job about a year ago and ever since then the brake pedal always goes to the floor, you have to push heavily on it and it makes a creaking noise, or a clicking sound the harder you press on it. What is this? Thank you!!
Great video Scotty. Are there any other signs that your wheel bearings need to be replaced? I’ve got a ’89 Chevy S10 and if I put a somewhat heavy load (~1000 lbs) in the bed the right rear wheel (and only the right one) smokes from the general area of the brakes & bearings. The wheel doesn’t make a sound like you mentioned in the video.
thanks scotty, my car's been shaking for a month now, knew it was the bearing, but didn't realize it could still be bad even if the wheel had no play. About to order the new parts!
Good that some new bearings come as a pre-installed hub unit as the last bearing I had to replace (Citroen XM) took ten tons force in a press before it decided to shift and that was after a clean up and an over night soak in Plusgas.
Say I've already replaced the wheel hub assembly and the noise came back after a while. What could have caused the new assembly to go bad in under less than a month?
@smabjure tightening it up too much loads em and wears em out, cheap bearings also make em wear out fast, see that a lot with aftermarket bearings. Scotty
Cool, Yeah for me, now that I got a new High Definition Lap Top I can see your videos in much more detail which is especially useful for me in my quest to learn the basics of auto mechanics by being able to see the smaller pieces in much more detail!
Also, Scottie, The vehicle has a 'shimmy' sound when the windows are rolled up, as if the vehicle is kind of hopping along the road. could struts be the problem with that also? again TY. Shawn
Scotty, How can i definetely tell whether I need struts for my vehicle? I recently replaced outer tie rods that were very obviously bad. (98 tracer). I find that the ride is a lot stiffer, and the thing wants to 'skid' when brakes are applied over rough roads. It feels like the tires are overinflated, but that isn't the case. the vehicle seems to want to litterally just 'jump' off of the road! Tahnx, Scott. Shawn
@hydromorph1965 watch my other video "how to check out the suspension of your car" for that. And look for bouncing when you push down and oil leak at the shafts. Scotty
Very informative, thank you for being so specific on each step. Is this the same procedure for ford explorers as well? I have a Ford explorer with automatic locking hubs in the front and the bearings need to be replaced on both wheels. Is this a difficult procedure since im dealing with automatic locking hubs? Or should I have a mechanic replace them? Thanks Scotty...
What happens if you drive with bad bearings in your back wheels in a fwd car? Other than the humming, does it do any damage to the car? Also, how much does it cost to get it repaired at a mechanic? Parts and labor
I replaced both my rear wheel bearing couple months ago on my 2000 Honda Prelude. While on highway I put the car in neutral and took foot off the gas to hear the awful humming sound.
I found it easier to hear and feel bad bearings when I would coast to a stop (manual transmission). Once the road noise dies down enough there's time when you can really hear the grinding noise and feel it through the vehicle.
Had this humming problem for 2 months on my second hand 92' Honda Civic, went to fix the brake pads when it only needed new bearings, it's so quiet now
Had a FRONT wheel bearing go out on a '95 Mazda MX6. Unlike this video 1) The hub nut was frozen on so I had to cut it off (impact nor cheater bar attached to very long p;ipe tricks didn't work), 2) I had to have the bearing pressed out then the new pressed in, 3) Had to deal with all the headaches of taking apart the front end suspension (sway bar link, ball joint, tie rod end). But the "crushing rocks" sound went away and the car rode smooth as silk.
I seen that you took apart that bearing assembly, Could I do the same with my vehicle, take the bearings out, clean it out and put new grease in there and seal it back up? Or is it basically dead once you open the bearing assembly? My rear right bearings make a low rrrrr noise between 80-90, and the noise goes away when i turn left. Instead of paying 70 bucks for new bearings I'm hoping i could just regrease em
Just makes it look and sound so easy.

I had the same noise coming from my leaking cv joint on both front sides, i took one wheel off, with the ebrake on, put it in drive and saw that the noise wasn't the bearing.

@tonystewartracingfan A lot of weight on them, and a not so hot GM design stresses them. BE sure to use quality oem bearings too, the cheap chinese made ones often crap out really early. Scotty

if my car makes a squeeking noise when i take right turns, can it also be a wheel bearing?
AGreedyTree 9 months ago
@AGreedyTree It could, but more often that's worn brake pads doing that. Scotty
scottykilmer 8 months ago
Scott - I wanted to check if my wheel bearing is bad because it makes a lot of noise when going about 35mph. My car is a Toyota Tercel '93 and I can't seem to be able to take off the brake drum. I tried your methods, and others online...but to no avail. Do you know if there's anything special to do with this car? Thank you very much in advanced.
The guys at the shop are costing me a fortune for the shop, I don't want it. :) :)

cssgenie 9 months ago
@cssgenie that brake drum has two holes in the drums on the outside, you screw small bolts in there and it will make the drum pop off. Do it all the time, look for the two opposite holes that are threaded. Scotty
scottykilmer 8 months ago
@scottykilmer I saw your methods and wanted to try it. The problem is that the brake drum doesn't have those holes on it to put in the bolt and screw them out. :(

Hi Scotty, today is my luck day :)... what if humming sound when slightly turn to right when high speed on highway?
axenz1 9 months ago
@axenz1 then the right bearing is probably worn, it gets loaded when you turn slightly and then makes noise. Scotty

Thank you!!

Good Job again Mr. Kilmer. Can you add a notation that reminds people to bleed the brakes if you remove the line from the caliper like you did?

@stringsbytoby I did not remove the calliper from the line, I removed the calliper from the hub, the line was intact. Scotty

YttriumNitrate 9 months ago
@YttriumNitrate Smoking is not good, take it off and check both the bearings, and the brakes for dragging. Scotty

What could have caused the new assembly to go bad in under less than a month?
smabjure 9 months ago
@smabjure tightening it up too much loads em and wears em out, cheap bearings also make em wear out fast, see that a lot with aftermarket bearings. Scotty

Also, Scottie, The vehicle has a 'shimmy' sound when the windows are rolled up, as if the vehicle is kind of hopping along the road. could struts be the problem with that also? again TY. Shawn
hydromorph1965 9 months ago
@hydromorph1965 yes, worn struts often make it hop. Scotty
scottykilmer 9 months ago
Scotty, How can i definetely tell whether I need struts for my vehicle? I recently replaced outer tie rods that were very obviously bad. (98 tracer). I find that the ride is a lot stiffer, and the thing wants to 'skid' when brakes are applied over rough roads. It feels like the tires are overinflated, but that isn't the case. the vehicle seems to want to litterally just 'jump' off of the road! Tahnx, Scott. Shawn
hydromorph1965 9 months ago

Parts and labor
datpimpinboy 9 months ago
@datpimpinboy makes the tires wear out faster and eventually the wheels would fall out,. Prices vary immensely , call in your area for quotes. Scotty

smokimon 9 months ago
scotty you are the man!!! thx alot for the videos im learning from you
XxgunsxX1 9 months ago
I found it easier to hear and feel bad bearings when I would coast to a stop (manual transmission). Once the road noise dies down enough there's time when you can really hear the grinding noise and feel it through the vehicle.

OAK91161 9 months ago
Had a FRONT wheel bearing go out on a '95 Mazda MX6. Unlike this video 1) The hub nut was frozen on so I had to cut it off (impact nor cheater bar attached to very long p;ipe tricks didn't work), 2) I had to have the bearing pressed out then the new pressed in, 3) Had to deal with all the headaches of taking apart the front end suspension (sway bar link, ball joint, tie rod end). But the "crushing rocks" sound went away and the car rode smooth as silk.
smithraymond09029 9 months ago
always good stuff.
new09870987 9 months ago
I seen that you took apart that bearing assembly, Could I do the same with my vehicle, take the bearings out, clean it out and put new grease in there and seal it back up? Or is it basically dead once you open the bearing assembly? My rear right bearings make a low rrrrr noise between 80-90, and the noise goes away when i turn left. Instead of paying 70 bucks for new bearings I'm hoping i could just regrease em
sacr3 9 months ago
@sacr3 If it's making noise it's worn and greasing it would be like trying to grease up sandpaper at this point. $70 is cheaper than a tow, or an ac
