It's often a hunting behavior. Sort of a "closer....closer....closer little bird....get your butt over here so I can getcha!"

Kind of like when you're watching an intense moment on tv and you end up with your face nearly on the screen.

That's so cute when cats do that. I have two cats, and they only chirp occasionally, and only when they see birds or squirrels outside. But my one cat goes "rrr-rrr-rrr" when she's playing (when she greets you, she does one "rrr", she only does three when she's playing).

It's an unconscious response upon seeing prey, I think. The muscles of the throat and jaw kind of twitch because it's emulating the killing motion even though the "prey" is out of reach.

Some posters in other videos wrote that when cats do that, they are mimicking the chirping of birds to call them in. As we know cats do this to laser pointer and moths, I don't think that's the case. What do you think?

I have done that lots of times before, and my cats haven't done that. They all just meow, not chirp. They go crazy after the laser pointer though! They'll jump up at it like they can reach it.

when some cats are in a playful mood they "click" or "chirp". I found this out when i used to get my kitty to chase a laser, she used to chatter constantly while doing it. I thought she was ill but asked a friend whos a vet and they say its a sign of them being content in a playful mood, completely healthy.

That's EXACTLY the sound our cat made when she meowed, just a wierd creaking/chirpy kind of meow. Far as I know she wasn't tracking anything with her eyes..

Some cats only do it in hunt mode. I have nineteen of them, and they all do it when they see birds or squirrels.
