I have a problem. Whenever i try to play the game it lags VERY badly on linux. I know its not my hardware because it runs smoothly on my windows 7 partition.
It boots and doesnt crash but the framerate must be close to 1-2FPS compared to the 60 that i get on windows

it's not like they can't develop for linux, not sure why they choose not to? not a big enough market? i'd slap down $50 for a copy of fallout3 that works flawlessly in ubuntu.

Actually ATI has provided better drivers in the last few releases. I have some of my games working under linux/wine, but a lot of them still will not run.
ATI gaming on Linux has it's problems - though I'm currently running a Radeon 4870x2 and can play quite a few games just fine. Though after at least 10 driver updates without a fix for playing online Valve games (CSS / TF2) without crashes it's time to say goodbye to ATI...

True, i a gree, at 1 time i was using uBuntu and loved it so much, but my Laptop is using ATi 5650, and therefore no supported driver, i my laptop only use the Integrated GPU
which suck cause i cant play latest games around
but i love ATi so much that i decided to gave up on uBuntu instead of changing an Nvidia supported laptop xD
@aegisgfx Guess what, I have a x1400 and I have acceleration on Ubuntu 10.04 now :D. If you have a chip based on R300-R700 then search for the R300 Gallium Legacy. It is so awesome :D
You only apply one of those patches to wine, the one for 1.1.18 or greater.. What's the second one you are talking about? BTW, what kind of frame rate did you get, I got 15-20 fps on my 9800 GT but I had to turn down all the settings.
ubuntu has everything working(well except some gameguard probs but thats cause not all game publishers updated their gameguard), i u ever get ubuntu, well don't get linux mint, its actually almost ubuntu but has some things installed and you wont run in as many problems
Most games are made for Windows and Mac but they run faster on Windows then Mac. Linux you would have too use programs and addons to run this games and a great system to run them but if there was a greater way to run the game on Linux like Windows Vista and 7, Linux would be fastest of them all thats for damn sure.
You know that most of the windows games runs better in linux than it would in windows. And ubuntu don`t support games wine does, not for native but who cares?
Hmm, that's weird. If you look on the WineHQ you will see that many people have successfully got this game up and running.
You can see my video response for a easy way to set this up, you don't have to compile anything and the script basically does everything for you. It's very nice : )
Ive got Fallout1,2and Tactics running, did have Morrowind until I tried to install the expansions.Still working on that. I'll be checking out your Oblivion vid this afternoon.
Thanks so much, I am finding your information most helpful.=]
But tell me one thing about Linux. Can it run any Windows game? And if so. Does it run it well like this game for example or if not the same as Windows? I have a Mac. Can I make a partition with only Linux and run the game? Since Linux doesn't occupy much stuff does it run better?
@DaweyYT I have been able to get this game working, but some of the textures in-game aren't mapping. (Primarily NPCs) That's the only problem I have. So many variables, it is hard to troubleshoot. Might be the fact that I am using an ATI Card, might be that I am using Wine 1.3. Any suggestions?
@DaweyYT Will that thing run on wine with a crappy Intel GMA? I bet it won't. I wish it did, because I bought that game and it didn't in my windows box, with the GMA. 60 bucks Canadian and, we all know, once you bought it, you get to keep it, even when it doesn't work. Doh me.
You may require some xinput dlls. I have only played some WINE games with a PS2 controller. I can test my Xbox 360 Wireless controller when I have time. I think it works "plug and play" in Ubuntu Jaunty and other distributions with a big and updated kernel.
I've got a question for you mate. I've got dual boot and I still didn't try to use wine and Fallout 3. Actually, I run Windows only to play Fallout. The thing is: It crashes every 10 minutes. The system shuts down and restarts. I don't even get to see the blue screen. Are you experiencing crashes when playing? If not, I will just format my Windows partition and use Linux for everything... (I'm using OpenSUSE 11)
It requieres a better system too achieve same performance. Since DirectX is Microsoft's proprietary software, it means that it can't be used in Linux. So every DirectX call is translated to OpenGL. OpenGL based games often works quite fine with Wine. I made a benchmark a while ago of Prey, search google for "prey on linux benchmark" and you will find it. Prey has a native version now (which it didn't when I did the benchmark). I hope that this msg and my benchmark has helped you in some way.
Yeah maybe. I've been using Wine active (using latest development version, searching info, trying to contribute in some way like writing guides and creating videos) for a bit more than a year, and with the rate it is developing it will probably run Crysis a lot better than it does now in about a year or so.
The Direct3D code is quite hard to write what I understand (you need to have quite a bit of experience with it before), so Wine always is always behind a bit compared to Windows.
since i'm 14 years old, i live in Belgium, and i don't have english on school, it's pretty normal that my english isn't that great + who told you i use linux, i only said that linux is virus free, and free for downloadm so who's the dumbass now?

Of course, you have made a excellent point. The important thing is to be rational (which people like Mansoor9 and lullo456 aren't).
My goal with making these videos is just to show what Linux and Wine can do (hopefully some people will try out Linux because of my videos), and people somehow feel the need to proclaim that Windows is much much better and that Linux sucks.
Microsoft did loads of marketing and advertisement to make windows popular and now that it has biggest market share developers are targeting windows platforms for their games. Since Linux is FREE and there is no company to do heavy advertisement like microsoft does common consumer dont even even get a clue unless someone introduces linux to him/her. Linux as OS have much better memory managament/security and faster filesystem ( wich is also much more secure than unsecured and slow ntfs).
And to add about native games , that were meant to play on Linux not emulated compatibility layer like WINE, they DOES run faster on Linux than their windows versions. Atleast for my sucky hd2600xt Doom3 and Quake4 runs faster than on windows xp, let alone vista the resource hog. I'm using wondows 7 at the moment and its still same ntfs and memory managament seems improved at first but it just boots active applications while sometimes leaves parialy sleeping apps comatose and hanging :)
Once you people figure out why fallout 3 doesnt run on wine your jaw will drop. It's as bad as DRM. They made fallout 3 with the intention of not having it be able to run on anything but XP. The reason is the back door hack embedded in fallout 3 only runs on XP. The hack is for the NSA. That was my findings, and as a scientist I'm allowed to draw my own conclusions.
