Very nice. I read in one of the comments (yes, I actually read the comments; don't die on me) that this form is a mixture of the various styles you've studied, but with a definite leaning towards Shaolin; mind if I ask which weapon? Staff, spear, pudao, guandao?
Bro, if you learned from a cereal packet, please let me know which one to buy it, lol. I really liked what you did :D I believe that the purest form of martial arts is exploring on our own (of course being careful and respectful of the weapons). Great job, man! :D
Haha, well, that was entertaining :) I'll admit, I respect that fact that you admit you don't really know what you're doing, in terms of the traditional use of the weapon, but that kinda makes me wonder why you're playing around with a make-shift one. Just playing Samurai? It's cool if you are, I do it too :P I just also practice the systems themselves, I reckon if you did too, you'd really enjoy yourself :D
@bujinsakura You're very much right, but im not actually attempting any Naginata form what so ever, i probably didn't make that clear in my description, the only thing about this thats got anything to do with Naginatas is the weapon in which i use, apart from that, yes, iv not a clue about the ''traditional'' use of such a weapon =]
@bujinsakura are you the stupidest fucking person alive? i bet if you tried to replicate this mans amazing talent and skill you would slice yourself in 2. you need to learn that he is amazing and you are a worthless commentor. you dont deserve for him to reply to you.
@FireBird7766 Um its not any one form, its just a collaboration of various styles iv studied, but id say shaolin Kung Fu would be the most featured style that i use in this vidoe =]
@FireBird7766 kool, i got to yellow belt in karate before i gave up for various reasons. But other than that i also do Wing Chun, Muay Thai and abit of Ninjitsu
this is so cool. you really look like a warrior or tribesman. you performance is just fantastic - well trained - great skills - even the cool hair. thumbs up. would like to see more!
@dipidulor Hey, thanks for all the comments, it's nice to read such support. I do hope to make some more vidoes one day, im currently making a Wing Chun dummy by hand, so hopefully once thats done i may get some photage of me training on that. =]
May I ask how long the blade on that khukuri is? you seemed to weild it with ease, it clearly wasn't too cumbersome. Really good vid, I liked the music and the weapons of choice. Last of the Mohicans soundrack, I believe?
@EnterTheMuffin i think it's a 12" blade if i remember correctly and it is very well balanced hence my ease in weilding it. Also you would be correct to say Last of the Mohicans lol...Thanks for the comment
i sincerely loved this video, mostly cause of the fact that my favourite weapon is the naginata(altough i don't own one, i use a wooden stick that i took from one of my trees that looks almost exactly like one, just a little shorter) i love doing katas with it, and i hope that someday i shall own one and practise to be as good as that :)
Epic I sure how no ass hole saw you swing around that thing and called the cops cuz it's illegal to own sharpened blades like swords, Naginatas, and tridents.
@Atasenna It's only illagal to have them in public spaces, so as this was in the private of my own backyard i wasn't do anything wrong in the eyes of the law =) but thanks for the concern
people have got to learn that this guy knows how to use a naginata in combat but he wont so instead he created forms for SHOW, i know he's skilled just by looking at him, his footwork and control of the naginata are near perfect, people have to learn this is essentially showing off his skils in a way that doesn't involve actuall fighting, that is was kata is all about
I'm amazed I can't believe how good you were at that. But the kukri at the end bored me just a tiny bit. I wish you would make a video of you fighting someone else.
would be nice for some of the people commenting to have some martial arts skill, though generally i agree "flashy" moves get you owned, look to taekwondo and see how it works for them. the spinning "flash" is to solo train though id bet there aren't many that would have a clue how to stop it or where they were getting hit from next if it were used against them. someone capable of controlling their weapon through high speed "flash" can very easily control it in a direct and practical movement.
Well Done very good form and style I would recomend any one else wants to try this practice with a BO staff first before you get into the naginata the Khukri a nice touch to both weapons from different parts of asia but look good together your like me I love to use a Tomahawk Khukri combination looks a bit off but works just fine
except what im doing actually requires skill and uses genuine moves from kung fu for exp, the only made upness is the sequence inwhich i put the moves. =]
You can find wooden ones online at bokkenshop, or e-bogu. The bladed ones, like through Paul Chen workshop, are all about 1-1.5' to short in total length. And, don't do the twirls. Deep leg cuts bleed a lot, and quickly. You'd hate to be unlucky.
Ah. Well, I bought one from Century Martial Arts. It should work fine for practice, but eventually, if I decide I like naginata, I'll check out Paul Chen's. Does he have a website I could buy them from, or would I have to go on a road trip to buy one?
You can find bladed ones through various sites- ie, the ones that sell katanas. Be VERY careful. They can be sharp (stay away from stainless steel). Good luck finding a school- if looking around youtube, look at katori-shinto ryu, tendo ryu, Toda-ha buko-ryu- the kata dont look exciting, but they are the real thing- this guy is VERY talented athletically, but this kata is, well...not a good use of the weapon? (repeat- it's not a bo staff...it's not a bo staff....it's not a bo staff...)
Most of the sites I've been to don't have naginata. Could you give me any reliable ones, so I've got a lead when/if I decide to buy a serious one?
As for the school, I'm in Taekwondo mainly, and some of the instructors there, I know, could teach me some basics. I learn mostly from experimentation, but I could probably pick up a thing or two from the videos. I'll be sure to check them out at some point.
Well.....a tkd instructor probably knows nada about naginata (again, it's not a bo! no offense, I used to practice tkd too)... and I will say, really, do NOT swing a metal one without proper instruction. I cannot stress that enough. Some of the videos here are scary with how close people come to chopping into their own leg.
Good luck. If you ask what's most important, and they don't say 'cutting in plane', they don't know the weapon. Holding like a bo staff (ie, in the middle, unless it's 9ft long and they studied KSR or a variant- it should be held near the back end), twirling, kicking under it, being showy, etc...all usually bad signs if you want authentic skill. If you just want to look cool (nithorry certainly does!) and have fun, more power to you. Just watch your shins!
Yeah, I would naturally be holding it similarly to a spear. But use it mostly for slashing, rather than stabbing. Although, I'm sure stabbing isn't out of the question.
So, basically I should use common sense. Consider if the technique would be practical, or just showy before I get too used to it. And save the spinny-showy stuff until I get good at it. 'Bout right?
It is primarily for cutting, yes, keeping the cut in a plane so you don't twist the blade and break it. You can do thrusts with it, as secondary attacks, and they also have an iron chisel on the butt end you can smack or thrust with.
The spinny stuff is generally worthless from a practical aspect- a good way to get yourself beat. It looks damn cool, and shows athleticism, but it's as non-applicable as you can get. Most real weapons work is not at all flashy or showy, especially Japanese
Well, my naginata will be coming in sometime next week. This should be fun.
Yeah, pretty much like empty-handed fighting. If you do the flashy-jump-twist-flip-kicks in a real life situation, you're just going to get yourself owned.
It's too short to be a naginata, there's no ishizuki on the butt-end, and seriously, naginata are not competition bo staffs that happend to have a blade. Really. Otherwise though, dude can move dynamically really well.
This guy is actually pretty badass

I think the first weapon you demonstrate can be catagorized as a naginata. Good form and technique dude. Keep it up!

Well, plenty of the instructors at my school have been through other systems. So they've got multiple styles, some weapons.
Well, I'm usually very careful until I get a feel for the weapon. Then I experiment with the more showy stuff.

Good luck. If you ask what's most important, and they don't say 'cutting in plane', they don't know the weapon.
