  • It would be better to describe people by the tone of their skin rather than by "black skin" because it's so varied within the so-called race. I mean to say, you go by the undertone as well as top color...and it's usually some shade of brown anyway..not "black." So, obviously, there are "black" people who are light in shade as well as all the way to jet black. It's not all the same.

  • just so i get this right cause i was confused with mac for a long time.. : Mac would actually describe Jennifer Lopez Skintone as a cold tone since its more yellow than pink? isn't that kind of stupid ._. .. to me yellow tones always were the warm ones and pink ones the cold ones..

  • @x3SkylineSouvenir It is a bit confusing until you look at an artists colour wheel. Red/pink is warm and Yellow is Neutral, so it does make sense in that respect. But of course it helps to look at a colour wheel! x

  • @x3SkylineSouvenir its because yellow is sonsidered a "cooler" color than pink

Thats what helped me understand. hope that helps

  • i'm a neautral who leans towards yellow.. tho i dont tan. I burn. i've tried pink tones and my face looks sooooooo pink. like i have viva glam gaga on my face. T____T I cant find a yellow toned that doesnt make me look like bigbird tho

  • @kasai0494 Neutrals will probably work on you!

  • Marilyn Monroe <3

  • I am new to makeup.I did not know how to choose a foundation. I checked out your blog on this topic. It was sooo helpful. Thank you so much.

  • @chrissy3010 No problem:)

  • it was so helpful!!thank u so much!!!

  • 1.2 what to do with myself! i am naturally a really dark, ashy and dirty blonde but this looks just boring and really not flattering. it feels like nothing looks nice with my white pink toned skin!

  • @lakleo Neutral colours are usually always a safe bet! x

  • 1.1hey girl, this vid was a blessing for me! i really didn`t know i was a pink undertone, i always thought i was yellow, but my hands and veins are plain and bright blue. do you think, it is okay to wear a neutral foundation when you are very pale and slightly pink tone? i dont tink i like my skin very much, somehow i alway look very sick and washed out. i now went for a bright blonde with cool undertone and i think i like it, but when the cool tone washed out i look sick again. just don`t know

  • Very very helpful ! I'm quite pale but i guess im more of a yellowy neutral colour :) And i do tan when i go on hoiday so thank you ! Trying to determine what hair colour i shoud go for.

  • @Hattie1994 Good luck! x

  • That paper method is genius!

  • @yochristophercameron Quite! x

  • which mac foundation is for dry/normal skin?

  • @KBphat Sculpt or Mineralize SatinFinish. x

  • This was so helpful. Thank-you

  • This was such a helpful video! I've been struggling to figure out why neither yellow toned nor pink toned foundations seem to work for me. I think I've figured that I am cool toned but a bit closer to neutral than very pink. This is going to help a ton! Thanks!

  • @FibercrazedBeauty Glad to help!

  • This video is laughable, i am African and i can see my veins and they are GREEN.

  • @missqjulie I'm sure they are!! You must have missed the part where I said I was talking about very pale skin, and very DARK skin. I am referencing dark African skin here.

  • I look good n all colors especially red

  • I'm African American in I can see my veins

  • @lovely2626 I was referring to dark black skin etc when talking about the vein thing not being accurate.

  • I can't really do the vein test right now, but I think I'm more yellow toned x3 But I can wear oranges, yellows, and reds really well.

  • I can't really do the vein test right now, but I think I'm more yellow toned x3

  • Thanks for this video. I always have a hard time figuring out it i'm warm (pink) or cool (yellow). I always feel like something is either too pink or too yellow on me. I'm probably neutral but more on the pink side. :)

  • @MakeupNme Glad to help! x

  • @MakeupNme I'm thinking the same thing for me. I'm very pale, so it helps to know that may be one reason. I've heard of so many methods. I've even heard you can tell by the color of the your nipples. Whether they're more pink or golden. I always seem to fit somewhere in the middle but warm colors look pretty awful on me and jewel tones suit me so I'd say I'm a bit more pink.

  • @DecemberMarie I usually get the lightest shade of foundation even though it's usually too light, then I would put on some bronzer and blush to neutralize everything. Any shade darker was either little too pink or too yellow which is frustrating. I will probably always have this issue. :(

  • @MakeupNme yes me to !!!

  • great video! Your make up is stunning...what about a tutorial! kiss from italy

  • @lindalola8 Thank you! x

  • A good place to check is the palms of your hands or your inner lip. If they are salmon you are probably yellow, if they are pink or plum or purplish, you probably have pinker undertones.

  • This was really helpful!!! Great video as always :) xxx

  • @07gabbie70 ^_^

  • Is it possible to have pink and yellow skin tone? I swear i cant figure out which one i am... i think its a combo!? Is that possible Shiv? thanks for this great video :]

  • @ApricotArtLover Yeah, you could be neutral! x

  • Completely OFF TOPIC, but oh well. There's a new American show with Sarah Michelle Gellar called Ringer and one of her names on the show is Siobhan. :)

  • @KellyJelly9976 Ha ha, I'm watching it! x

  • my face is lighter than my neck, (awkward tan that never faded), so my foundation will not cover completely...any suggestions???

  • @hellokitty4nintendo Try a primer that has an orange tinge to it to help bring up the colour. A good foundation should cover and bring the colour up to your neck colour. x

  • You do have to be a bit careful with professional opinions depending on where you live. The makeup stores around here tend to make everyone tan due to the demographics. I, myself, am very pale and can never get a professional opinion because they always try to put in shades 2-3 shades too dark! The only one i can trust is my friend who is also pale (she always tells me the truth too!)

  • @Zelzega Haha, on my counter I tend to match most of the pale people! x

  • @Zelzega Haha, on my counter I tend to match most of the pale people! x

  • @LetzMakeup My sister and I went to Ireland back in '05. That was the 1st (and only) time we ever found the truly correct shade. lol

  • I definitely have pink undertones and I know that because I cannot wear the color orange; it washes me out. I also do have blue veins

  • Reall , really great vid - i found this so helpful. Many thanks.

  • @flushed1977 Glad you liked it! x

  • I am African-American and I reviewed your blog. You did an EXCELLENT job with showing the ranges of "Black" skin and its undertones. Often times, people refer to Black skin as if we are one color. Alek Wek is obviously not the same shade as Halle Berry. One very popular guru became offended when I pointed this out and blasted me which started a huge debate. Thank you so much! Bravo!!!!!

  • @TrayTrayBaby Thanks for that, it's much appreciated! xx

  • I happen to be very pale with a pink undertone, and everytime she said "your tan" I thought "what tan??" <3

  • I'm not sure exactly how well the jewelry and clothing method really would help, at least for me. I know I have relatively pink undertones. Maybe because I think gold is SO much prettier than silver, but I definitely look better with gold on. Same with clothing. Maybe for my red hair, but I look better in browns and greens versus red, although blue does look great. Finally, anytime I try a foundation on my hand and it blends perfectly, it always looks way too yellow on my face. :/ Any tips?

  • @MusicalAnimeLuvr191 I'm kinda like that too, and what I also thought was really weird was that my sister suits different colors than me, although we're the same skintone/color/hair color. But then I found this site which made it all give more sense. It's one were you're one of the four seasons. It's phenomenal for finding new exciting colors you never knew suit you! Try this site:

    collegefashion . net / fashion-tips / how-to-find-your-perfect-colors /

  • @Eliiisabeth93 Thanks. That site kind of helps. Thing is, the very first question in the tree leads me to the blonde or brunette side. There needs to be an extra diagonal over to the red hair. Then it would work great. I think I look like crap in yellows and honeys but blue and grey are good... and first fork is an immediate stop. :/

  • @MusicalAnimeLuvr191 Then skip the question thing and find the season and type that suits you best :) A tip could be to write down the colors from the seasons you're wondering about and try them on to see what suits you. :)

  • @MusicalAnimeLuvr191 The hands aren't always reliable for testing.... I'd recommend going to a counter to get matched properly. x

  • Great video!!! Very helpful info!

  • Great info thanks for sharing!!

  • Comment removed

  • @Adeela1989 It depends. Often red based but not always. x

  • i was told u shud match ur foundation with ur neck colour so u hav the same colour and not a different colour on face and different on neck. i am lighter on my neck and darker on my face

  • My skin is only a tiny bit darker than Evan Rachel Wood's but pretty much exactly the same tones... what Bare Minerals shade would be the best match for me?

There's so many shades and I have already bought a couple that look too 'orangey' on me (I don't live anywhere near where I can go and get matched). I love the makeup but just can't find my correct shade even with mixing two of the colours....

  • @itsageoffrushthing I'm not sure, I'm afraid. I'm not that overly familiar with Bare Minerals!

  • Hey everyone, would just like to share my makeup with people.. if your really fair the way i am.. ive dark hair and paaaaale skin. i researched and everyone online was saying nc15 from MAC was the lightest available. I got it last xmas for my birthday as its quite pricey 35euro.. and it was extremely yellow for me. I bought a Maxfactor in my local pharmacy in shade /colour fair ( maxfactor 100 fair) its the lightest colour foundation i have found and i love it. its around 13euro" :D

  • I'm an NC20; people have told me I've a yellow base to my skin but I've also been told I'm neutral. I have blonde hair that I highlight. I used to use golden highlights which lookjed very natural on me but recently I went for a cool toned blonde and it looks great. Am I both??

  • @CoganKnowsBetter I'd say you are probably yellow/neutral. That's what I am! x

  • Thank you for the tips! I always thought I was warm/yellow and was matched to an NC shade at MAC and have been unsure ever since. Now I know they switched it around. Thanks so much, love your videos!

  • I'm still confused lol

  • this really helped :) im definitely yellow toned lol

  • helpful!

  • my face is pink but my body is more yellow :s

  • I don't know about anyone else, but when i went to mac to get color matched one of the foundations she used turned ORANGE and the other one was almost gray on me. Neither looked good. I am a light skintone with neutral pink undertones. It is so hard to find a good match :(

  • @TheRainyDayReader Yeah, the MAC pinks are not very light.

  • I think I'm a neutral. in the wintertime, I am very very pink and if I happen to buy a foundation and even if its the palest of shades, I can still show the yellow in my skin. now in the summer, I tan kind of in a gold-ish tone. i'm gonna say its because my dad is a pale irish man and my mum is a tanned portuguese woman.. he tans pink, definetely haha but my mum does get a gold tone. that kind of creates an issue for me! thank you very much for the help, and I think I'll keep two foundations lol

  • @RockalilyDunne most people need to colours to be honest! x

  • what if you have blue and green veins?

  • @hiphopr1 It can change from area to area! x

  • i think u should try contouring your nose differently. this way gives it a weird shape

  • @BabiiHime Thanks for that. I don't have it contoured in this video.....

  • @BabiiHime Thanks for that. I don't have it contoured in this video.....

  • Im glad someone said bobbi brown was stupid to say everyone is yellow toned.

I dont think you can get paler than me if you didnt go white and i am CERTAINLY not yellow. I have no MAC counter near me so i cant get MAC makeup. I stick to L'Oreal True match in rose ivory and wear a scarf haha!

  • @Cordi666 Like many Irish skin tones! x

  • I think I'm warm but I'm not sure! Can you look at my vids n lemme know? I am so confused!!

  • @Victorian9322 It's hard to tell on camera due to lighting but you look neutral/golden based! x

  • Hi! I wear silver jewelry, love wearing cool tones but I have always thought of being yellow undertone, because my skin looks really yellow. Last time I was in mac store I asked about my skin tone and they told me I was surely pink (also because of my paleness), but last time I tried a pink tone foundation I could see the difference with my neck! What do you think I could be?

  • @xLinda2009x You are probably more neutral. Can't be sure without seeing you in the flesh:(

  • @LetzMakeup Thanks for the answer ;-)

  • I don't know if Prescriptives ever had a presence there, but they had hands-down the best-matched foundations because they broke skin-tone down into red, blue/red (cool), red-orange and yellow-orange (warm). To determine your color, they would take specialized color sticks and draw a line from your (not made-up) face, jaw to neck, and see which of the pigments matched best. Because the foundations matched so well, people were stocking up when they heard the company was going out of business!

  • @kendalchen I think they used to be but not anymore unfortunately. I never got to try them out! Shame they went out of business. x

  • Every make up counter that I have ever gone to have picked out an incorrect color for me. I am latina. There is NO MAC colors or Clinique colors that matches me. I later found out it is because I have OLIVE undertones. The Sephora website breaks down the color and undertones for a lot of the foundations. Most foundations do not carry foundations with olive undertones.

  • @lawprob84 MAc Pro have Olive tones. x

  • I just have enjoyed your vid so much, I feel that you know exactly what you are talking about. Thank you, you are beautiful x

  • @sekili03 Aw Thanks! That's nice to hear! x

  • So, my face is pink, buuut my neck is yellow. Suggestions?

  • @PoisonRoze1991 A yellow foundation will counter-act pink colouring & match your neck. x

  • @PoisonRoze1991 I have the SAME problem!! I thought I was alone yaaay hahah

  • @addictedtoelf Lol nooo. I'm envious of my mom... she's generally yellow... though she insists she's pink. =.= wrong-o.

  • picking my foundation means i always have to match it to my neck and chest, because my face is super pink, and the entire rest of my body is yellow.

it always seems odd to put a foundation on that doesn't really match my face, because i'm used to my face being pink but if i match my face it looks like i'm wearing a mask, lol.

  • Is it possible that your skin tone changes? I used to think I was PINK PINK PINK, 'cause golds looked horrendous on me, but in later years I'm not so sure anymore (although this could be because I branched out in colours and such with eyeshadows as I got bolder). Maybe neutral? I use natural-fair in GloMinerals' powders, which is neutral. I'm quite pale.

  • I have noticed that more bright colours like white to baby pink to baby yellow makes me look brighter. my hands are more pigmented than any other body parts...specially during winter my fingers looks more of purple but other time it is reddish. even my veins seems blue. what do u think which undertone i am? im confused :/

  • I know I'm yellow undertoned, but when I tanned, I thought my skin turned more pinkish. So I bought a pink undertoned new foundation. I just applied the foundation in spots where I needed to cover up a little, and then learned QUICKLY once I got out in the sunlight that it was ALL WRONG for me. If all else fails for you (the paper test, jewelry test, etc...) just buy (or borrow) a foundation you can tell is yellow or pink undertoned for SURE, and try it. You realize quickly which suits you best!

  • my veins are in 2 colors , super purple and very green [well turquoiseish green] , also I'm super fair and I can't find a foundation that will suit me, its either to pink or to yellow, what should I do ?

  • im definatly a sliver white gold gal too :):)

  • Love this video thanks!!! :D

  • Thanks for the helpful tips! But a quick question if I may about Mac's confusing numbering, I am a 120 in Make Up Forever, I have yellow undertone, would it be NC or NW in Mac??? Thanks!

  • @mjgremlin NC, read my blog! x

  • It sucks the way mac dont do the pro longwear in nw 15 because the 20 is waaaay to dark for me i use the nc 15 and i can get away with it but id say the nw would be a slightly better match but its not obvious in any way really but im definatly slightly more pink than yellow but not in an obvious way

  • @vampiresiren2 I agree, and also they need to bring out NW10 also in the other foundations, especially studio fix fluid. x

  • @LetzMakeup yep i totally agree with you siobhan because ive been a wee bit darker cos of the summer the pro longwear was fine for the summer. It sucks because the formula is so perfect for my skin and really doesnt melt off my oily spots. I forked out the dosh for the chanel matt lumiere in the lightest shade and its 100% perfect match but i think the pro longwear is a better formula. So im going to give the revlon colorstay in ivory a bash because the colour is perfect for me.

  • lol my face has pink undertones while my body is yellow

i'm half asian, half spanish sooo... i guess my face took the spanish and my body took the asian hahaha

i just mix a bb cream with estee lauder maximum coverage foundation :)

  • @rahrahritaa I need to try out BB creams! x

  • Enkore has a really great video about how to warm or cool down a foundation. Its a really REALLY great video. If you have too yellow of a foundation, you can add a purple colour corrector to make it more to a tone for you. Its really interesting and a great video. Check it out :)

  • @uskitin Yeah, saw that. Very handy. x

  • I'm NC20 in Mac... so, is my skintone cool or warm??? What a fix O_o

    Thank you! =)

  • @Kartoshka1980 I covered this in the video but check my blog post on it if you missed it!! x

  • I am literally yellow under my arm...

  • Thank you so much for this video

  • I'm yellow toned, but every foundation is always too dark or orange. I bought Face Atelier's Zero Minus Foundation which is white, and I mix it through my foundations to make them pale enough :) This has been my perfect method for years, living in Ireland and not having pale enough foundations considering Irish people are often pale is really annoying.

    Great video!

  • @SarwenRHCPrule I have also done this for years too!! I have found some nice pale foundations lately, drug store brands are getting much better! Including Revlon, L'Oreal etc. xx

  • You're great! Thanks so much for this! And you are absolutely gorgeouuus

  • @suushi123 Cheers. xx

  • I am yellowish toned with pink in my cheeks. When I wear a pink based foundation, it enhances the redness and my neck and chest look yellowish. When I neutralize the pink in my face with more yellow foundation, it makes my neck and chest look pink. I hate to slather my whole body in makeup, tho. I don't know what to do any more. I'm a flippin' chameleon!!!!!

  • @MakeupLuck Yes, me to, plus I have looooaaads of freckles and ginger hair. I think I`m neutral but I still haven`t found a perfect color

  • @MakeupLuck The pink in your cheeks is high colouring and not your undertone. I would just use a green primer on the red areas or a yellowish concealer, and use a foundation that matches the overall tone. x

  • This is why you are my favorite! Thanks for clarifying the mac warm/cool issue! And I still love the blonde hair, so pretty :)

  • @segrant86 No problem!! But I actually dyed my hair bright red now!!! x

  • one question - what is an "olive" skintone? not really sure what thay means lol.

  • @zainekh4n I address this in my blog post! xx

  • So so helpful!

  • @XxiloveGWxX ^_^

  • Some companies numbered their foundations, which for me is complicated in terms of determining undertones cause i'm colourblind...somehow i heard that odd numbered foundation is Yellow undertone and even Numbered is Pink undertone...is it really?

  • @angeleuss Never heard that so not sure, sorry:( x

  • For me the easiest way is to check the original haircolour in natural lights. Warm undertoned people have gold-copper shine, cool undertoned ones have cindery shine.

  • @hunvamp This is definitely another method to add to the list but depending on where the person is from in the world, not always accurate!

  • How funny, I just sent you a message on the point. What would you recommend to those who are more pale & neutral (like the Korean model on your blog) who can't find a foundation that would not make them look like Miss Piggy or Bert? :)

  • @Ayla888 Definitely find a white like Mac's Face & Body in White, or find a brand that has light neutral colours. Like Laura Mercier. Also, Mac's Studio Sculpt in NC15 is very neutral pale. x

  • In Summer I'm yellow and in Winter I'm pink.

  • When I went to MAC to figure out what colour tone I was, the girl just applied a tiny bit of both to my jaw line and asked which I liked more. Wasn't very helpful! :(

  • @xcarriejx Maybe you are neutral and you could get away with both. This is fairly common, in that case, the decision is literally up to you! x

  • I actually nearly never find a foundation that is my skintone... all too yellowish and too dark... Sometimes the color is nearly my tone, but then it looks unnatural... could that be because of my freckles?

  • @SmilyLily1996 try clinque they have alot of pink tone, cooler toned makeup and some lighter ones that would be great. be careful with matching ask for a few samples try them in the sunlight.

  • @SmilyLily1996 Yeah, very possibly. Freckles are brown obviously so if you are pale and put a pale foundation on your skin, it can look ashy over the freckles. Annoying!! I have the same problem sometimes too. xx

  • Girl you are real class! I love love love did I mention love your videos, so professional and informative and most of all useful. I enjoy your creative looks and your accent! One day I will make it to Ireland its on my wish llist. I live in Germany so the trip is not so far any reccomendations of points of interests and of course great places to shop for all things girly.

  • @cookiemix67 Ha ha, thank you! Well I have shown a couple of places already on my vlog channel, ShivInTheBox, that you could look at and I intend on adding to that! xx

  • I find my skin tone so confusing... A lot of my body is incredibly white, with what seems to be a cooler undertone, but my face, arms and from my knees down have a very golden-ey undertone all year round. My mom is white and my father is from the Phillipines, so there's just this huge range in my skin... I can wear either jewelry, same with colours. I'd probably say I'm somewhere between neutral and gold. Sometimes it even seems like my skin gets cooler throughout winter, and vice versa.

  • @TheSalemW Yeah, you are probably more neutral than any extreme. Lucky really as you can get away with more! x

  • I am very pale and have a lot of redness but i don't like the look of warm foundations on my skin so that's why i use yellow foundations and adjust it with bronzer and blush (:

  • @ManonMorsch Yeah, many people prefer that! x

  • Thanks very much for the video, it was very helpful!

  • Great Vid =) x
