@YesImInThisVid12 My great grandpa fought in WWI. His parents had to go and pull him out because he was underage. Its a good thing too. He was the only member of that unit to not perish. Knock on wood they got there in time.
My great grandfather fought in this war. He was excepted into Harvard but he was drafted to fight, so Harvard was postponed until after the war. He was so physically and mentally affected by the gases in the trenches that when he came back he was to unhealthy and out of it to actually go back to Harvard and finish. He ended up working in a factory, on an assembly line.
@sonofhimmler1 James Darmody was my Great Grandfather who fought in the 3rd Division in WWI. He lost his life at a early age. He had fallen to his death in 1921 as a contractor in Boston, MA. It's so happens its the same name as the guy from boardwalk empire.

To think my grand-father who died when I was 16, served in the British Royal Navy in BOTH WWI and WWII and he ran away to serve in WWI lying about his age to serve as mine sweeper after HIS father's ship was sunk by a German U-Boat torpedoed in the Dardenelles. R.I.P. Grandpa as you were a most amazing man and I miss listening to your stories and I miss YOU!!!
I read an item from a WWI veteran who stated the moral picked up in Britain as the Yanks arrived. Many were farm boys stout and strong and the Europeans were in awe of their physical condition. I believe the same can be said of WWII. With the demise of our agricultural base we have lost those stout and strong young men. However, hats off to those who volunteer today because it is an all volunteer military.
Its weird to think that all these young men are all probably now dead... sush great guys. Served in war... guess thats what the fututre generation will think about us 100 years from now.

@rock1262 Actually George M. Cohan won the "Congressional Gold Medal". Which alongside the "Presidential Medal of Freedom" is the highest Civilian award in the United States. (Neither to be confused with the Congressional Medal of Honor which is the highest Military decoration awarded by the United States government).
oh and all those other millions of non-jewish, gypsies, mentally challenged, and just plain old americans hitlers armies killed, P.S. Frank Buckles was a fascist prick who should burn in hell, he was descended from slave holders, he thought dark skinned were racially inferior, and was a "proud member" of sons of the confederacy
@MrRobTyner and saying weve been that way since our inception, well we where not involved in an international war until 1812, then we had a war with mexico in 1846, then we had a war with spain in 1898. so until ww1 in which we joined in 1919, the 143rd year america was a country, the military was only used 3 times internationally for a grand total of 5 years. Thats 3% of its existence
seriously find out what happened when johnny got his gun over there, he ended up a brain and a torso kept alive for 36 years by machines, that whole sinking of american ships aint the reason america was in wwI, read your goddamn history, america is a bloodthirsty empire that's killed wave of innocent people after wave of innocent people since ints inception, WWI did not produce one single gain for humanity ever!, unless you count WWII and the subsequent slaughter of 6mil jews

@agent4051 The founding fathers of America fought for a democracy. Which we are not. Common misperception, but America is actually a constitutional republic. Just a little FYI
@ShadowsOfMoonlight Then how come our Pledge of Allegiance refers to our country as a Republic, and our Declaration of Independence and our constitution do not even mentioned the word "democracy"?
@agent4051 ~shrugs. I've never really been interested in politics and government, but I've been told pretty much my entire life that America was born of and for democracy, and is a democracy. Tell you the truth, what you said about the pledge didn't even occur to me until you pointed it out. It's just that when people talked about governments "by the people," it seemed to directly imply "democracy."
@ShadowsOfMoonlight Yeah, I use to think that the US was supposed to be a democracy, but when I was in middle school I took american history and found out that it was supposed to be a republic.
@hotdogman67 Just because someone thinks the government deserves more power, it doesn't mean they should die. I'm wholeheartaedly against communism, but still...
@hotdogman67 Just wondering...why exactly do you hate Communists? Do you have any real reason, or do you just say that because it was how we were brought up coming out of the Cold War and hating on Soviet Communists?

yes johnny, get you gun, unite with your brothers on the other side of the trenches and kill the aristocratic capitalist officers who sacrifice the lives of the proletariat for the interest of their immoral capitalist depravity!
FRANK BUCKLES, the very last living WW I Vet of all time and any country just passed away this week...........A wonderful "Pulitzer Prize Quality" article named "Farewell To A Generation" on the AP Website honored him as the very last of his kind beautifully and speaking bluntly on how WW I is still affecting us to this very day.
The United States had no business fighting in Europe during WWI. The US lost over 116,000 men (roughly 10,000 per month). Even if every American ship in the world were sunk we may have lost 10,000 TOTAL. President Wilson caved in with the goal of global utopia. Nice try you Ivy League nincompoop!
@AndrewPPalmer Well, only about 53,000 brave, American souls died, and the rest were wounded; and even then, it's trivial compared to the death toll of other nations during the war.
@AndrewPPalmer AMEN! If every nation had minded its own business, the war would have been a 3 week battle between Austria and the Serb terrorists, and the 20th century would have looked an awful lot different.
The thing i hate most about WW1 was how its ending, specifically the punishment of Germany, was the cause of WW2. If we had followed Wilsons plan, and did what we did after WW2, work to rebuild all damage, rather than punish the offenders, then Hitler wouldn't have been recived as universally as he was. It's the perfect example of why revenge isn't the best option. Stupid Allies.
This propaganda is so sad. World War I was completely and utterly pointless, just a way for the governments of each participating country to get back at their rivals at the expense of such a huge loss of life. Not to mention it caused World War II, despite World War I being the "War to end all wars"
@sugarcube440 yes world war I was very pointless, but i wouldnt say it was "just a way for the governments of each participating country to get back at their rivals". it started when archduke franz ferdinand got killed, so the major powers just used this as an excuse to use their military because up until that point all these countries were building up their military and they wanted to test it out. but they got trapped in a bad situation that they couldnt get out of, (trench warfare).
@sugarcube440 ww1 was the bloodiest war ever and its not propaganda its a song that they r singing to encourage ppl to join the army i know im in 7th grade.
@legonatter105 Actually, it wasn't the bloodiest war in history. It was for its time, but there's this little war called World War II that's the greatest loss of life in human history. And you just about defined propaganda there in your comment. You'd hear it or see it, and then want to do something you wouldn't if it hadn't been for that. Propaganda isn't necessarily bad.
@legonatter105 that's great, i'm in 10th grade and we're studying propaganda. this is propaganda. and no, world war II was the bloodiest war ever, about 16 million people died in world war I and around 60 million died in world war II. i do believe you're missing the whole undertone of the song.
The last America WWI veteran died just a few months ago. There are no more left now. My Grandfather and his two brothers were all there in the Great War. One, my Greatuncle Sgt. Artie Manco was decoraded with the DSC for his service.
Its amazing to think that of the millions that fought this war there are only 3 alive today and that those who died in that war died almost 100 years ago.
Let us remember the men who fought this war as we pass over the threshold from memory to history. As the last of them die the war will fade into history as a war of immense suffering and needless destruction the only lead to the start of a second more terrifying and hostile war.
@Thomasinoke It's music hall styled from 93 years ago. The metal from those years would be shrapnel scything you to the stinking mud. To my friends I say, "It's Chinatown, Jake."
Wasn't one of the lyrics- "fuck a bear, I'll fight any night in my underwear"? Why was that lyric left out of this version?

AndrewPPalmer 11 months ago
@AndrewPPalmer Well, only about 53,000 brave, American souls died, and the rest were wounded; and even then, it's trivial compared to the death toll of other nations during the war.
Hobojedi 11 months ago
@AndrewPPalmer AMEN! If every nation had minded its own business, the war would have been a 3 week battle between Austria and the Serb terrorists, and the 20th century would have looked an awful lot different.

@AndrewPPalmer Not to mention that Britain was the real enemy.

@johnmburt1960 It's a figure of speech he's the last to go through the gates to heaven to see his old buddies and his long time friend Pershing.

RIP Mr. Frank Buckles. Went to war once as soldier, once as civilian , then moved to a farm and stayed there.

I LOVE THIS SONG! I'm not really pro war but it's great for games like fallout and such. Can't find the Billy Murray version on iTunes, help?

The thing i hate most about WW1 was how its ending, specifically the punishment of Germany, was the cause of WW2. If we had followed Wilsons plan, and did what we did after WW2, work to rebuild all damage, rather than punish the offenders, then Hitler wouldn't have been recived as universally as he was. It's the perfect example of why revenge isn't the best option. Stupid Allies.
mrfreeman117 1 year ago
@mrfreeman117 Alternately, if Neville had the balls to stop Hitler when he was blatantly violating the Treaty, then WWII wouldn't have happened.

@hunterkiller232134 Yeah, it's like the one Hitler Downfall Parody "Hitler reacts to the Hitler parodys being removed from Youtube" said
"Google's basically doing the same thing the british did in 1937: They're doing nothing while these fucking Nazis start destroying the world!"

This propaganda is so sad. World War I was completely and utterly pointless, just a way for the governments of each participating country to get back at their rivals at the expense of such a huge loss of life. Not to mention it caused World War II, despite World War I being the "War to end all wars"
sugarcube440 1 year ago
@sugarcube440 yes world war I was very pointless, but i wouldnt say it was "just a way for the governments of each participating country to get back at their rivals". it started when archduke franz ferdinand got killed, so the major powers just used this as an excuse to use their military because up until that point all these countries were building up their military and they wanted to test it out. but they got trapped in a bad situation that they couldnt get out of, (trench warfare).
ihmen 1 year ago
@sugarcube440 it was the blodiest war ever.
legonatter105 1 year ago
@sugarcube440 ww1 was the bloodiest war ever and its not propaganda its a song that they r singing to encourage ppl to join the army i know im in 7th grade.
legonatter105 1 year ago
@legonatter105 Actually, it wasn't the bloodiest war in history. It was for its time, but there's this little war called World War II that's the greatest loss of life in human history. And you just about defined propaganda there in your comment. You'd hear it or see it, and then want to do something you wouldn't if it hadn't been for that. Propaganda isn't necessarily bad.
Shadesbane43 1 year ago
@legonatter105 Uhh WW2 was the bloodiest war ever. 70 million dead. Millions more injured.
keinaan12345 1 year ago

TheWaarivzrach 1 year ago
@TheWaarivzrach It truly is. In my lifetime the same will happen to the veterans of World War II and Korea. Tempus Fugit.

Let us remember the men who fought this war as we pass over the threshold from memory to history. As the last of them die the war will fade into history as a war of immense suffering and needless destruction the only lead to the start of a second more terrifying and hostile war.
