The amazing thing about this scene is that even though you never hear what the other person is saying, you clearly understand the conversation as if you were on the phone too. This is filmmaking at its best, the dialogue along with Penn's performance make this scene incredible. You can feel every emotion, there is no one better than this guy. Very underrated film. I personally think this performance of his deserved a oscar nom.
@Josh0473 i absolutely agree with every word you type. Horrendously underrated.
It was near impossible to get some family members to watch this movie because they had heard not so good things about it. It's a shame because this movie is too good.
I have to agree with you as well. Perhaps not so much regarding the Oscar nomination as the importance of the Oscars is blown so far out of proportion.....
I like how you use the word dialogue. Nice.
Anyway, you could say the whole thing is therapeutic. Therapy. From images on a 2D screen.
@martinbuzora I don't say the film had a low production value, just i think that the story lacked some strength. For instance it had a really good build up of the environment, some good scenes (supported by strong cast), but i felt the ending was rather weak. I wanted more. I know that it was based on true event, but that's just how I feel. It has been a while since I've seen it though and it's not that I hate it. But I just think that Sean Penn took a mediocre story to a higher level :)

It would be easy in that second after the phone call to take a gun and blow your brains out.

Penn's performance compensates for the quality of this film

@graagraes What is that supposed to mean, his performance compensates for the "quality" of this film? Are you saying it was low quality?
