A workaround is to rotate it the other way. If you hold the bottom of the phone (rotate the phone clockwise to hold in your left hand) the signal is a lot stronger.
Use WiFi Analyzer from the Android Market to look at the numbers. I saw values between -35dBm and -60dBm that all showed as full signal in the notification area.
I've got the same issue. I always have to hold my phone only with one hand in landscape as with both hands one will cover the WiFi radio and make lost the signal. But actually that's just one of the minor problems with this piece of sh** phone, I also got a 3g arrow up stuck problem, a screenshot with home button problem, a power button problem, so... Did I mention this is the worst phone I ever had?.
I have an HTC sensation and i was having this problem, i took it to T-Mobile and by turning off the radio and turning it back on, the employee fixed the deathgrip for the wireless network, the wifi still has a deathgrip problem but it isnt too much of a big deal when you have the 4G backing it up, just take your phone into your carrier and ask them to fix it, unless you find the code to access the radio setting you wont be able to fix it on your own.
You do realise it's just because the antennae is part of the back panel and as you hold it tighter with that hand you're bending the back panel and disconnecting it. If you take the back panel off the gold tab on the top right is wifi, if you want you can add an extra layer of kitchen foil that will help keep the connection.
When you're that close to the router it doesn't need the antennae to pick up the signal. It's not a problem just hold the other end or hold it looser.
Assuming you hold it with one hand during normal use, instead of the doublegrip some people use, the... "solution..." *cough* should be simple. From portrait, rotate 90 degrees clockwise instead of counter-clockwise so you'll hold it from the end with home/menu/etc buttons instead of the wifi-antenna/camera side and hey presto, no more wifi deathgrip :)
Ofc it doesn't fix it per se, but helps avoiding the problem, until HTC can fix the problem. :p
Cant be fixed. You can only direct more juice out of the battery to amplify the signal but that will drain the battery in no time. It's like in your laptop, if you don't get a signal then you don't. Case closed. Build an external antenna :P Keep it in your pocket next to the phone. Lol
The only way Htc is going to address this issues is if customers let them know about their problem. The more people that contacts them. the more likely they will do something a about it.
i just got the phone and love it but i think we have the same problem - I think your problem isn't because of landscape mode, it's because when in landscape mode, your hand is covering the wifi and bluetooth radios and causes the signal to go to nothing. when you hold it in portrait, hold it at the top so your hand is covering the top of the back. same issue? so far by googling, HTC is not acknowledging it yet - but it's a major issue. similar to the iphone death grip last year. need solution!
@tekotiger I don't have this issue, I just tried with and without auto rotate on. About your theory of why it is happening, unless you are made of metal that wouldn't be the case haha... Try using your car remote to unlock your doors and get just a little out of the range and hold the remote to your head/chin it will extend the signal. I believe it is the actual device as many people don't have this problem. If 1000 out of 200,000 phones have this problem, it isn't major at all.
i've got the same problem now, can anyone help plz??
