I'm an indoor USAV National Referee with my beach cert (just got the beach cert), but in no way, shape, or form should ANY player respond to anything in that manner. In the USAV handbook, which governs AVP, it's unsporting conduct to show disagreement, disgust with a referee's decisions. There are things I let go as a ref as I get the need to vent a little, but THAT was unacceptable behavior, regardless if the call should've went in their favor or not. Like I said, I would've carded immediately
@Frafty well in his defense if the ref had made the call their would be no need for Karch to explode on him. That was an obvious throw. Everyone knew it was bad but the guy with the whistle thinks otherwise so he gets away with being wrong. Why are refs considered so "High and Mighty" that we're not allowed to "show disagreement with" - they are humans, they are going to make mistakes, it happens but they shouldn't get a pass every time they blow a call.
You can call that set before it's made! Just look at hand position before the set. Referees shouldn't base their double calls on spin. I wish we had a video of the East Coast tournament at which Karch ripped the bottom of the net so hard, he pulled the referee off. Hey I saw Singing bitch for about 20 minutes once, calling time outs when he knew the referee was pissed. And he was playing his bro. Drew didn't care much for this act.
He's a well respected man... in volleyball... but, his behavior was too outrageous... and people make mistakes... so as referees, and I know a point can be very critical... but, do you need to be like that? Yelling, screaming... crying... damn... I'd call it a lift and give them a point back, but, then a penalty point for his behavior...
@Frafty Are you kidding. That was nothing compared to others I've seen OB in his prime. He once stomped on a woman on the sidelines near the net and screamed at her for getting in the way! She wasn't in great shape after that.
okay he doesn't call the ball ...but I would have given this guy a penalty, if not disqualification for reacting so infantile. Kinda reminds me of a three-year old throwing a tantrum in the store or something.
its not really a carry, its more of a double contact. as far as the AVP rules go, refs look for symmetrical hands at the end of a hand set. you can see jason throws out one of his hands trying to make that set, thus being an obvious 'dirty hands' call.
Karch said it best, "Don't do that to us!" Missed calls are one thing but that was a horrible set. His frustration is certainly expected, lot of money on the line for those guys....
If Karch wants a fuckin lift, the ref better give him the lift, because Karch is the god of volleyball, and can choose what to do with the sport. One time a ref pissed him off so bad, he killed all the volleyball players in the state of Rhode Island.
I don't think it was a double... looked more like a triple to me :D Still, no excuse for behaviour like this. It won't give you the point back, and it's a bad way to "work the ref"
I've got nothing. I don't think that this was bad enough to warrent this kind of reaction. Karch is one of the biggest asses to ever play volleyball. He's got talent, but he's such an ass when it comes to this kind of stuff.
I've watched this full screen 20 times, and I could have called it either way.
The ball didn't come to rest in the setter's hands, and the ball didn't hit his hands at different times. It looked ugly, but by the rules, this didn't look like a lift of a double hit.
Do you know anything about officiating? According to the rule book referees can't use the spin of the ball to make their call. If you don't see it, it didn't happen.
As a PAVO official, I'm not calling this a double contact. I just can't see it from this video, but I'd have to agree with the referee.
The fact that Karch has a hissy-fit makes no difference. He does this five times a match. This one happened to be caught by a camera.
@5061304072 the rules are also different in beach and indoor too, pro beach is really strict on sets. just thought you should know. referees are SUPPOSED to see that kind of shit. you can't just NOT SEE IT. it's their job. why do you think Karch's partner is saying "DON'T REF".
I love Jason Ring's walk back up to the net to applaud the ref for a good call. I'm sure he has respect for Karch and everything, but it's hilarious how he's trying to escalate, taunt, and exploit the situation. He had to know it was a bad set, but it was a heck of a hit by his partner, Reid Priddy.
haha gotta feel bad for Karch there. I didn't even catch it at first, it can be hard with this quality video. But watching it again shows a pretty bad lift that shoulda been called.
Ha ha ha. This is epic. I always laugh and never get sick of it. I mean, It's just funny. Listening to his voice, and then when he throws the bag or whatever. Don't get me wrong, I love Karch. My idol! But, that was a lift. It took me 10 times to watch it and figure out what was happening 'cause I saw a comment that said lift so I watched it and saw. Yes, that was a gnarly lift. Bad call. But, it happens.
yeah if a ball rotates int he air one whole time around it should be called a lift for avp and dont think karch is phsyco he can do what he wants he the god of volleyball :)
@jebsgatorfan40 "if the ball rotates in the air one whole time around it should be called a lift" im sure u meant double.. rotation of the ball has nothing to do with the fact that you lift or not. lift = u either caught the ball...or u threw it
this is a true thing that happens! its not a chain letter! its kinda scary at first but it really works!! paste this message into 3 comments and press ALT F4 and your crushes name will appear on the screen!!! its soo wierd
dam its only 1 pt. id be kinda pissed but not full out yelling. but, these are grown men at the professional levels so i guess every dam point is worth like 500 million dollars.
@Xrosein3 Guys there is a difference between a "carry"(technically called a lift) and a double hit. And while I agree with about the "carries" in outdoor(and yes I happen to be a sand player but I am mostly a setter) that set was simply a double and should have been called as so.
Honestly, I was surprised that he was calling a semi-final match later on. Probably normally a good ref that just missed a call. Sometimes the viewpoint makes a big difference. If he ever sees this, I imagine that he will wish that he would have called it differently.
Is this what Daniel Tosh was referring to in his funeral skit?

The rules are very clear.
1. It is the referees call, not Karch's
2. That kind of behavior warrants an exclusion at the minimum and if it continues, an expulsion.
