I am too tired to properly cite the man right now. I will find his essay and cite it properly. I have dumped bicycles and motorcycles over the decades since I began riding, and bicycle crashes have always caused much worse damage. Leathers work great, but are too hot even for MC riding sometimes. Until I do, you are welcome to ride Elmer's glue fastened pasta frames-one less snide puke would not be missed.
It has been determined by rigorous testing, that 4130 is weakened by brazing due to the brazing alloy entering grain boundaries and 'lifting' or separating the grains of the base metal. Gas welding or TIG is superior in this alloy.
@iq166 it has been proven that welded 4130 frames are weaker than silver brazed frames. There, now we've both made claims without any supporting evidence.
well first of all you'd have to define "better" - if by "better" you mean "weaker" then yes - welding is "better"
i've worked in a bike shop for about 6 years and have seen many bikes busted along welds, but never have i seen (nor heard of) a lugged frame busted along a lug - welding often heats the steel too much causing weak spots - brazed lugs actually make the joint stronger - the opposite effect of welding
i agree. lugged is the key word there. people think they can braise the way you would weld. Braise will hold a fitted joint together and allow it to have the little bit of flex it needs to stay togehter and not crack out. On something like a bicycle, or plumbing it is far superior. Shoot, up untill the 30's when electric welding was invented EVERYTING was braised together, or cast!
yOU ARE UNPOLITE, ON A BICYCLE BRASING STUDING M.I.T FILLET BRASE WITH SIF NICKEL SILVER IS STRONGER THAN TIG. I built 1000 frames no one cracks is full of carbon an alu who are cracked. I wrote a book How to cook a bicycle in your kitchen
Can you please post a video of you building a bike frame using a better method... I don't think you can. This is highly skilled brazing. 1800's technology, admittedly, unlike the inferior 1940's technology used on most steel bikes (TIG). TIG is faster and cheaper, not better.
Very nice video for someone trying to get into brazing himself. I've read lots of books on brazing and it's cool to see it in practice. If I'm lucky my boss at my LBS will get me some of these tools... Thanks for this!!!

Terrabladder= brazing is so strong that just a silver contact
braze in between a channeled groove and carbide tip
then brazed fully with brass is strong enough to make stone
cutting chisels that will last a lifetime if treated and used
properly....They'll take more of a beating than any bike frame ever will due to nature of it being a tool...

Cool enough but an explanation would have been worth the bother, a look at the finished item in full glare too.

Welding would be great for a thicker wall ... but most people don't pre and post heat properly ... I'd prefer the lugs ... they take a beating ...

I would think that a nice tig weld would be the way to go, you can adjust the heat and penetration

something inside tells me welding is better but i dont know brazing at all.
