@356pla Yeah and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea is democratic. Superficial analysis doesn't really help your argument, it just shows that you're too lazy to do any in-depth research.
@356pla No it doesn't you idiot, that's the problem. You have failed to outline any socialist policies that the Nazi government brought into place. So therefore idiot, your argument is baseless. You have just said that the Nationalist Socialists are socialists because it says socialist in their party name. If actually did some research, you would see that the Nazi party was not influenced by socialist ideals.
@89murph We could start with the Hitler youth program. we could talk about the decrees giving the state the power to direct production. It all started long before his first tank crossed a border or bomb fell on foriegn land. The Volkwagon (The Peoples Car) was his puppy. Subsidized the production. Never thought about or researched this so that's off the top of my head. My studies were... cont'd
@89murph --From Wikipeadia- " Italian Fascism and most other fascist movements promote a corporatist economy whereby, in theory, representatives of capital and labour interest groups work together within sectoral corporations to create both harmonious labour relations and maximization of production that would serve the national interest.[27]" - And the state makes the rules by which they are guided; The fascist mutation of socialism.
@89murph They are using principles that meet the deffinition of nazi-ism. It's not a thing. It's a concept.
They are using, as they do in my country of Canada, nazi principles to operate state health systems such as ours. The insiders do very well if they co-operate. The hospital boards and the associations that control labour are co-opted to reinforce state power.
@89murph YOu can see that they serve the state ahead of the people when the marginalised start dying for lack of service but their families can't sue the doctors because they are protected by the state. There are other perhaps unintended consequences to the socialist strategy, whether nationally applied, or if the stated intent is to apply the principles internationally..
@89murph -from Wiki on fascism- "They declared support for a nationalist form of socialism that was to provide for the Aryan race and the German nation: economic security, social welfare programs for workers, a just wage, honour for workers' importance to the nation, and protection from capitalist exploitation.[18]"
@89murph ...cont'd... more focussed on socialism the way Mao, Stalin, etc.did. They used communism to subordinate the will of the people. Hitler imposed his will on the ignorant masses through the vehicle of national socialism. Both methods subsume the will of the likes of me under that of he who heads the forces with the guns. A collectivist philosophy leads here. Socialist or mystical. Chairman, Dear Leader, Islam or Pope. All use socialist philosophy. All bad for those without power.
Hurry up and do us all a favour Thatcher. The sooner we see that state funeral your banging on about the sooner we'll no that your dead. A day of celebration will ensue.
I think you need to read a few books on the miner's strike and you might be wishing King Arthur would kick the bucket as well. He fucked up the miners just as much as the tories did.
I know he played a part. I wrote my dissertation on it. I know the unions and their influence needed tameing but the way she did it was totally disgusting and inhumane. Arthur Scargill may well have been an unorganized zealot with a one track mind, but I think what he stood for with regards to safegaurding communities livelihoods was spot on.
I accidently did a thumbs down there, sorry, because I agree with what you said with regard to inhumane actions of the govt. As far as I'm concerned the miners were being used by two opposing camps in an ideological battle.
I've read miners accounts, listened to ex miners, read government production projections, read minutes from meetings between the CB and NUM, read local and county council accounts, plans and projections. I've also read Marching to the Fault Line, Shafted, The Media, the Miners' Strike and the Aftermath, The Enemy Within, The Secret War Against the Miners, Loss without Limit, Thatcher and Thatcherism and Prime Minister Indominable amongst others....
Thatcher didn't care about the miners from the start. I have no doubt Scargill at the outset wanted what was best for those communities, but unfortunately like a lot of people who have too much power, in the end he came to believe he was inviincible and that played a major part in the downfall of the NUM and the miners - he gambled with peoples livelihoods and that I think is unforgivable.
Impressive reading list, but still not enough to justify wishing people dead.
Things would have been worse with someone like Scargill in charge. As a communist he would have restrained Free Speech & had no qualms about suppressing dissent.
Say what you will about Thatcher, but at least she answered to Parliament & the electorate.
That said, I wouldn't wish either of them dead. Such talk is to show that your arguments don't hold water...
In what way does it show that my arguments dont hold water?
Tell that to the hundreds of thousands that we're made redundant. Left on the scrap heap with no other viable form of employment. Tell that to the families of those that commited suicide due to depression. Tell that to those communities that are still suffering today. High unemployment, drug problems, and crime are rife in ex mining communities.
Threatening people is what any punk on the street can do. In Politics, people can 'die' many times & suffer far worse at the hands of people like the Belgrano lady. Wishing her dead is too easy.
As for the argument, mining employment had already reduced from 1m in 1945 down to 100,000ish in 1979 - it was being phased out. We do have the best Coal in the World, but deep mining was not viable. Plus there was Scargill holding the country to ransom in 1974.
@tdp1909 Since when has wishing someone dead been a threat? It was reduced gradually from 1945. Not wiped out in the space of 18 months leaving thousands with no direction. I have read production projections from the CB. Those pits we're economically viable. The Ireland Colliery in Chesterfield was the most economically efficient pit in England yet it was closed. Scargill was a zealot with delusions of granduer. I have no arguments with that. Farmers dont have a clue what poverty is.
Depends on the Farmer, but a lot do live very comfortably & yet moan a lot!
I agree about it being a waste to destroy mining totally. The Bitter Irony is that Coal Mining produced the finest Coal in the World & our farms are the most efficient in the World. Thatcher has a lot to answer for...
In terms of wishing people dead, I just don't think its persuasive or moral. Part of the reason the miners failed was their perceived militancy...
Tell that to those who bought their council house under the right to buy scheme only to lose it because they couldn't keep up with mortgage repayments.
Since Thatcherism the richer have got richer and the poorer have been left to rot. We actually used to produce goods rather than the paper pushing economy that we have today.
She has a lot of suffering to answer for. No socially concious person could have done what she did. I wish her daed ASAP.
'Paper Pushing Economy'? Even with the recession, we are still the 5th biggest economy in the World. We may not produce Goods, but then nor do most Western countries nowadays. Service industries are also less subject to the productive volatility of manufacturing.
Besides, Thatcher's harshness & destruction of 1/3 of manufacturing do not justify wanting her dead.
Isn't it better to take a camera, find her & humiliate her with reason (like Moore did with Charlton Heston)? I'm sure you could...
@tdp1909 The production of goods is whats dragging countries like Germany and the USA out of recession. They have kept somekind of manufacturing base. Its not the destruction of 2 million jobs that justifies wanting her dead. Its the total disregard to the social implications of putting 2 million people out of work within a few years. I'm no fan of Labour, they are just a continuation of the previous administration. "I'm sure you could...", nice attempt at patronising anyway.
For the record, I wasn't trying to be patronizing. Although she's a bit old & it'd be a bit mean, I think the people who dislike her should DO something about it.
Seeing her losing on Youtube/ National TV would be just revenge for the hurt she caused up North.
I personally don't think she's wrong, but it'd be persuasive to see her arguments taken to pieces...
@spire1997 is an idiot - the vast majority of those who bought their council house ended up owning it and looking after it - unlike the layabout left who just destroy things. Look at council estates today for proof.
Have you lived on an estate? Those that initially bought ended up losing thousands to the banks. I know, my family were amongst them.
This was yet another policy from Thatcher that divided communities. Snobbery reigned amongst those that could "afford" to buy at the time only for it to come back and bite them on the arse.
I lived on a council estate for 20 years mate. I loved it. Its a great place to grow up. I wasn't berating council housing or council house tenants. Its Thatchers "right to buy" that was wrong. Look at the thusands who cannot get affordable housing because of the lack of council housing.
I am a Conservative, but once you see what's happened to Orgreave & the muzzling of the miners, it makes you desire a 'Michael Moore- Charlton Heston' moment involving Thatcher...
New Labour will close any remaining mines in the UK eventually to meet carbon targetsset by the eu.
Greenpeace and the trade unions want to see the end of all coal fired energy sources.
Some of these people actualy supported the miners during the strikes, but i think it was more to get at Margarete Thatcher than any real concern for the miners.
not long now maggie and hopefully you'll be boxed. ur only getting what you deserve.you caused nothing but grief the day you walked into downing street. you won't be missed!!!!
she wasnt fucking thick. let the workers buy their house. then if they go on strike the nthey wont be able to pay their mortgage. old bastard should be hanged
Well she sold off council houses in 1979, the miner's strike began in 1984. I don't think she had plans to batter the miners 5 years before she did so.
Anyway, the coal industry kept getting smaller and smaller over the past 100 years. It was just accelerated under the Tories. There were over 1 million miners in 1900, there were just 200,000 in 1983. So the coal industry would have died anyway, just a few decades later if she hadn't interfered.
I've just had a thought. When we bury Thatcher, should it be that we just push her coffin down a coal shaft, just to piss her soul off as it goes down to her best friend - Satan!?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
who would work down a shaft now in britain??? take your rose tinted specs off. they were unprofitable. was harsh but fuckin deal with it. 'we don't know our neighbours no more'-GOOD!!!! bunch of miserable nosey fucks round ours.
Privatised Britain mined 60 million tons of coal last year with many more mines about to be reopened . Britain is sitting on up to 500years worth of unmined coal and we have to pay russia to boil our kettles......Work that one out!
Scargill was fighting to save an industry which he knew the Tories planned to destroy. He was proved right. The Tories won their battle and we are now living with the consequences. We have no industry left in the UK apart from service industries which are mostly in London and the south east and there are no good jobs for working class people.
Agreed. And what has replaced the decent working class? A sub-human grouping nicknamed 'chavs'.If there isn't any jobs for them though, what can they do but appear on The Jeremy Kyle Show?
Marx called them "lumpenproletariat" - an ignorant underclass co-opted by the Establishment. The Tory criminals destroyed the politically active working class.
...and New Labour of course continued it.Wonder what Gordon Brown told the now Lady Thatcher when she visited No.10? "Are we still doing enough to satisfy you?"!!!!
You do realize that those industries were turnign britain into a 3rd world country slowly, they certainly weren;t amiojgnany moneym thatcher sved britain.
Why? So we could import our own coal from countries where small children are losing their limbs or dying so you can have coal for a few pence cheaper a tonne!! If that is what you call success then I pity you!
Sorry, I don't understand your point. Are you sorry that the the UK mines were shut down? Or against coal ever being used to generate energy?
For my part I think we'll be burning all accessible fossil fuels around the world when we're desparate enough and the price is right - and that includes British coal.
Sorry I seem to have missed your point too. Yes Im sorry the mines were shut down because there is up to 500 years worth of coal beneath us and yes I agree now were getting desperate we will re open our mines again as we are actually starting to do so. Investment in cleaner coal should have been done 25 yrs ago and then we wouldnt be in this mess were in now.
I expect when a few of the world's larger economies begin to come out of recession the price of oil and gas will shoot up again.
With the UK having huge debt problems, a weak pound making imports expensive and North Sea production declining every year since 1999, Britain will be forced to look at other indigenous energy sources very seriously: Nuclear, coal, wind and tidal - possibly some biofuels (and push energy efficiency). So, yep, king coal will be back.
Which only proves it shouldnt have gone in the first place! But then only us with intelligence would see that and unfortunately all the others will only realise it when Reccession smacks them in the face ;)
Scargill was too moderate in the face of Thatcher's backward and criminal ideology (the effects of which we are seeing in the credit crisis today). He should have imported AK-47s via Russian fishing boats and mounted a revolution. I'm sure Andropov would have obliged.
Fantastic to see 25 years on how the miners are as one even today, I salute you all. Do something in your community to celebrate the Solidarity 25 years on. While Thatcher watches as she pees in her bed pan Lol.
A CANADIAN STROKE VICTIM,turned american that ruined british steel tells british miners its not british to strike?Do you realise that the police force where given a massive 8% pay rise 3 months before the strike 15%above inflation.
It makes me sick how many Scargill supporters there still are today.
Are people really that blinded by ideology to realise what an evil, conniving little man he was? The fact that he was perfectly prepared to bring Britain to it's knees to get his miners a few extra quid a week shows just how short-sighted and despicable he was.
I'm not saying Thatcher was perfect, but she was a damn sight better than Callaghan or any other weak labour leader.
It was a sad day for democracy when thatcher brought in undercover soldiers and sas members disguised as police.I know, i was one of the many that were batterd in the woods of orgreave, and we did get a few on there own and went in their pockets and found their id .Know mr i love thatcher was that a fascist state we lived in or not

So Scargill was prepared to bring down the whole country because the coal board was going to shut down an unprofitable mine with few reserves left?
I say thank god for Thatcher, those commies in the unions would've continued holding the country to ransom until we'd been bankrupted if it wasn't for her.
South Kirkby Collery mined one million tons of coal and with the power of Thatcher it was blown up capped & all workers redundant(that just one mine) It was said then, that what doesnt affect you today will certainly affect you tomorrow!!! took only a quarter of a century but now were all affected!!! We used to give away coal to our neighbours but now dont even know our neighbours!! Were stood on a fortune but all worried for the future...remember Coal Not Dole!!! Too late now. We are Bankcrupt.
South Kirkby was very costly to run, and after the spiralling costs of a Labour government, Thatcher had no option but to cut back. Obviously South Kirkby was not competitive enough to survive. Believe me, with the amount of cheap coal from poorer parts of the world, the British coal industry had no future anyway.
Oh, and the reason we are bankrupt is another 12 years of inept Labour Governance, not because the coal mines closed in 1984.
Million tons mined in less than a year u call costly to run!!! And if coal is so cheap to import why is it so expensive to buy? Get your facts right Scargill wasnt fighting for more money he was fighting to keep miners jobs securing britains future! Maggie was only out to smash the trade unions & she did firstly getting rid of the most influencial of them all the NUM, & many others are now down the pan. Pity it makes you sick how many Scargill supporters there are today...Its called SOLIDARITY.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Miners are not the only people that ever lost their job, and not even a majority of miners wanted to stike. Scargill destroyed the British coal industry, and he used a strike to bury it. Would have happened with or without Thatcher. Pathetic...
ha ha! when that arrogant snooty bag came up to glasgow to hand over the scottish cup, BOTH the celtic and dundee united fans booed her. 40 thousand at least. the voice of opinion eh?
I was talking to a Welsh ex miner yesterday on holiday in Wales. The're on about giving her (thatcher) a state funeral when she croaks,he said, I hope they dont use British coal to cremate the bag, Although we'll happily dig a bit for to burn her alive!!!!!
i come from a x pit village in south yorkshire. an people that thatcher here. an loads of x miners here say when she die's they'll be having day off work to go out celibrate!!!!!!
Apparently it;s gunna cost 3 million quid for her funeral. For three million, they could give every Yorkshireman and Welshman a shovel, and we'd both be able to dig a hole so deep that we can hand her over to Satan personally!!! Let him deal with the Bitch Whore of England!!!
@pplpilot Seeing as most comedians steal jokes from their writers, or make small changes to jokes from other comedians I don't see the difference in an ordinary member of the public like me simply stating the same comment here, as it's relevant.
Bloody shame, i remember it well, can anyone answer me, "What do we have left of british industry ??"
there is Nothing for the working class anymore, the only jobs seem to be Call centres, and thats if your lucky, the comanies would prefer to have cheepforiegn labour than have british workers, we have no industry ,Nothing, and it just gets worse,
I feel ashamed to be english, no other country or creed treats its own people so disgustingly than the last 40 years of Govt
zensho.... sounds like a shodan (1st dan) in zen budism... didnt know there was such a thing... anyway i agree with owler spot on mate. notts people were the same in the national strike of 1926 .. when they formed there own union called the spencer union only to come back into the fold .. wonder how much maggie payed roy link for his part in his work mates down fall...
Hello, I'm a Performing Arts degree student. I don't know much about the mining strike, other than what i have read on the internet. I'm trying to investigate personal stories of the effects the strike had on families: wives and children of those on strike. As well as those who continued to work.
With these personal stories we are hoping to present a realistic drama piece on the 1984/85 strike. How it effected the men and families at the time.
Thanks, we have done now...Been to Durham, Chesterfield, Leeds, Barnsley and Sheffield! We've compiled a theatre performance about the strike which is showing this week (Thurs-Sat) at Stanwix Arts Theatre in Carlisle...Anyone welcome!
Another thing i remember about the strike was that we sheffield wednesday played notts forrest on the first day of the 84/85 season and all you could hear from us owls supporters to the forrest scum was SCABS SCABS SCABS SCABS and we beat the scabs 3-1
Never said it was relevant it was just a thing i remember when the strike was going on,i will put it in simple terms for you i was remembering a child hood memory of the strike so do jog on old chap
When, McGregor died and I got drunk for two days. When Thatcher finally kicks it I will be drunk for a week. Sounds sad and really bad but thats how I feel. Thatcher and McGregor wll meet in Hell

Is that sufficient argument?
356pla 1 year ago
@89murph They are using principles that meet the deffinition of nazi-ism. It's not a thing. It's a concept.
They are using, as they do in my country of Canada, nazi principles to operate state health systems such as ours. The insiders do very well if they co-operate. The hospital boards and the associations that control labour are co-opted to reinforce state power.
356pla 1 year ago
@89murph YOu can see that they serve the state ahead of the people when the marginalised start dying for lack of service but their families can't sue the doctors because they are protected by the state. There are other perhaps unintended consequences to the socialist strategy, whether nationally applied, or if the stated intent is to apply the principles internationally..
356pla 1 year ago
@89murph -from Wiki on fascism- "They declared support for a nationalist form of socialism that was to provide for the Aryan race and the German nation: economic security, social welfare programs for workers, a just wage, honour for workers' importance to the nation, and protection from capitalist exploitation.[18]"

@89murph I'm not going to bother. You can think of this as a win if you want to.
356pla 1 year ago
@89murph ...cont'd... more focussed on socialism the way Mao, Stalin, etc.did. They used communism to subordinate the will of the people. Hitler imposed his will on the ignorant masses through the vehicle of national socialism. Both methods subsume the will of the likes of me under that of he who heads the forces with the guns. A collectivist philosophy leads here. Socialist or mystical. Chairman, Dear Leader, Islam or Pope. All use socialist philosophy. All bad for those without power.

I think you need to read a few books on the miner's strike and you might be wishing King Arthur would kick the bucket as well. He fucked up the miners just as much as the tories did.
kduk020 2 years ago
I know he played a part. I wrote my dissertation on it. I know the unions and their influence needed tameing but the way she did it was totally disgusting and inhumane. Arthur Scargill may well have been an unorganized zealot with a one track mind, but I think what he stood for with regards to safegaurding communities livelihoods was spot on.
spire1997 2 years ago
I accidently did a thumbs down there, sorry, because I agree with what you said with regard to inhumane actions of the govt. As far as I'm concerned the miners were being used by two opposing camps in an ideological battle.
kduk020 2 years ago
@kduk020 Of course they were being used within an ideological battle.
Name a human dispute involving more than two that doesn't.
As soon as you introduce the third party that party will be encouraged to join 'a' side.
Your point is moot.
356pla 1 year ago
@spire1997 But at who's expense. Was that part of your thesis?
356pla 1 year ago
I've read miners accounts, listened to ex miners, read government production projections, read minutes from meetings between the CB and NUM, read local and county council accounts, plans and projections. I've also read Marching to the Fault Line, Shafted, The Media, the Miners' Strike and the Aftermath, The Enemy Within, The Secret War Against the Miners, Loss without Limit, Thatcher and Thatcherism and Prime Minister Indominable amongst others....
Is that enough "reading" for you?
spire1997 2 years ago
Thatcher didn't care about the miners from the start. I have no doubt Scargill at the outset wanted what was best for those communities, but unfortunately like a lot of people who have too much power, in the end he came to believe he was inviincible and that played a major part in the downfall of the NUM and the miners - he gambled with peoples livelihoods and that I think is unforgivable.
Impressive reading list btw!
kduk020 2 years ago
Impressive reading list, but still not enough to justify wishing people dead.
Things would have been worse with someone like Scargill in charge. As a communist he would have restrained Free Speech & had no qualms about suppressing dissent.
Say what you will about Thatcher, but at least she answered to Parliament & the electorate.
That said, I wouldn't wish either of them dead. Such talk is to show that your arguments don't hold water...
tdp1909 2 years ago
@tdp1909
In what way does it show that my arguments dont hold water?
Tell that to the hundreds of thousands that we're made redundant. Left on the scrap heap with no other viable form of employment. Tell that to the families of those that commited suicide due to depression. Tell that to those communities that are still suffering today. High unemployment, drug problems, and crime are rife in ex mining communities.
spire1997 2 years ago
Threatening people is what any punk on the street can do. In Politics, people can 'die' many times & suffer far worse at the hands of people like the Belgrano lady. Wishing her dead is too easy.
As for the argument, mining employment had already reduced from 1m in 1945 down to 100,000ish in 1979 - it was being phased out. We do have the best Coal in the World, but deep mining was not viable. Plus there was Scargill holding the country to ransom in 1974.
Have not Labour done similar 2 farmers?
tdp1909 2 years ago
@tdp1909 Since when has wishing someone dead been a threat? It was reduced gradually from 1945. Not wiped out in the space of 18 months leaving thousands with no direction. I have read production projections from the CB. Those pits we're economically viable. The Ireland Colliery in Chesterfield was the most economically efficient pit in England yet it was closed. Scargill was a zealot with delusions of granduer. I have no arguments with that. Farmers dont have a clue what poverty is.
spire1997 2 years ago
Depends on the Farmer, but a lot do live very comfortably & yet moan a lot!
I agree about it being a waste to destroy mining totally. The Bitter Irony is that Coal Mining produced the finest Coal in the World & our farms are the most efficient in the World. Thatcher has a lot to answer for...
In terms of wishing people dead, I just don't think its persuasive or moral. Part of the reason the miners failed was their perceived militancy...
tdp1909 2 years ago
@spire1997 Still too much collectivism all around you. Socialism, a drug hard to quit.
356pla 1 year ago
@tdp1909
I wish her daed ASAP.
spire1997 2 years ago 3
'Paper Pushing Economy'? Even with the recession, we are still the 5th biggest economy in the World. We may not produce Goods, but then nor do most Western countries nowadays. Service industries are also less subject to the productive volatility of manufacturing.
Besides, Thatcher's harshness & destruction of 1/3 of manufacturing do not justify wanting her dead.
Isn't it better to take a camera, find her & humiliate her with reason (like Moore did with Charlton Heston)? I'm sure you could...
tdp1909 2 years ago
@tdp1909 The production of goods is whats dragging countries like Germany and the USA out of recession. They have kept somekind of manufacturing base. Its not the destruction of 2 million jobs that justifies wanting her dead. Its the total disregard to the social implications of putting 2 million people out of work within a few years. I'm no fan of Labour, they are just a continuation of the previous administration. "I'm sure you could...", nice attempt at patronising anyway.
spire1997 2 years ago
For the record, I wasn't trying to be patronizing. Although she's a bit old & it'd be a bit mean, I think the people who dislike her should DO something about it.
Seeing her losing on Youtube/ National TV would be just revenge for the hurt she caused up North.
I personally don't think she's wrong, but it'd be persuasive to see her arguments taken to pieces...
tdp1909 2 years ago
@spire1997 is an idiot - the vast majority of those who bought their council house ended up owning it and looking after it - unlike the layabout left who just destroy things. Look at council estates today for proof.
deathtotheunions 1 year ago
@deathtotheunions is a twat.
Have you lived on an estate? Those that initially bought ended up losing thousands to the banks. I know, my family were amongst them.
This was yet another policy from Thatcher that divided communities. Snobbery reigned amongst those that could "afford" to buy at the time only for it to come back and bite them on the arse.
spire1997 1 year ago
My parents bought a council house, I still live there its a nice area, don't generalise.
Jacada123 1 year ago
@Jacada123
I lived on a council estate for 20 years mate. I loved it. Its a great place to grow up. I wasn't berating council housing or council house tenants. Its Thatchers "right to buy" that was wrong. Look at the thusands who cannot get affordable housing because of the lack of council housing.

huggy176 2 years ago
Well she sold off council houses in 1979, the miner's strike began in 1984. I don't think she had plans to batter the miners 5 years before she did so.
Anyway, the coal industry kept getting smaller and smaller over the past 100 years. It was just accelerated under the Tories. There were over 1 million miners in 1900, there were just 200,000 in 1983. So the coal industry would have died anyway, just a few decades later if she hadn't interfered.

Scargill was fighting to save an industry which he knew the Tories planned to destroy. He was proved right. The Tories won their battle and we are now living with the consequences. We have no industry left in the UK apart from service industries which are mostly in London and the south east and there are no good jobs for working class people.

Presumably today's green activists are delighted that Mrs Thatcher succeeded in shutting down the UK's coal mines in the 1980s.
3ballard 2 years ago
Why? So we could import our own coal from countries where small children are losing their limbs or dying so you can have coal for a few pence cheaper a tonne!! If that is what you call success then I pity you!
ShianaJones 2 years ago
Sorry, I don't understand your point. Are you sorry that the the UK mines were shut down? Or against coal ever being used to generate energy?
For my part I think we'll be burning all accessible fossil fuels around the world when we're desparate enough and the price is right - and that includes British coal.
3ballard 2 years ago
Which means I expect new deep mines to eventually open up in the UK - and a lot more opencast mining.
3ballard 2 years ago
Sorry I seem to have missed your point too. Yes Im sorry the mines were shut down because there is up to 500 years worth of coal beneath us and yes I agree now were getting desperate we will re open our mines again as we are actually starting to do so. Investment in cleaner coal should have been done 25 yrs ago and then we wouldnt be in this mess were in now.
ShianaJones 2 years ago
I expect when a few of the world's larger economies begin to come out of recession the price of oil and gas will shoot up again.
With the UK having huge debt problems, a weak pound making imports expensive and North Sea production declining every year since 1999, Britain will be forced to look at other indigenous energy sources very seriously: Nuclear, coal, wind and tidal - possibly some biofuels (and push energy efficiency). So, yep, king coal will be back.
3ballard 2 years ago
Which only proves it shouldnt have gone in the first place! But then only us with intelligence would see that and unfortunately all the others will only realise it when Reccession smacks them in the face ;)
ShianaJones 2 years ago
Scargill was too moderate in the face of Thatcher's backward and criminal ideology (the effects of which we are seeing in the credit crisis today). He should have imported AK-47s via Russian fishing boats and mounted a revolution. I'm sure Andropov would have obliged.

I say thank god for Thatcher, those commies in the unions would've continued holding the country to ransom until we'd been bankrupted if it wasn't for her.
Taffy29 3 years ago
South Kirkby Collery mined one million tons of coal and with the power of Thatcher it was blown up capped & all workers redundant(that just one mine) It was said then, that what doesnt affect you today will certainly affect you tomorrow!!! took only a quarter of a century but now were all affected!!! We used to give away coal to our neighbours but now dont even know our neighbours!! Were stood on a fortune but all worried for the future...remember Coal Not Dole!!! Too late now. We are Bankcrupt.
ShianaJones 2 years ago
South Kirkby was very costly to run, and after the spiralling costs of a Labour government, Thatcher had no option but to cut back. Obviously South Kirkby was not competitive enough to survive. Believe me, with the amount of cheap coal from poorer parts of the world, the British coal industry had no future anyway.
Oh, and the reason we are bankrupt is another 12 years of inept Labour Governance, not because the coal mines closed in 1984.
Taffy29 2 years ago
Million tons mined in less than a year u call costly to run!!! And if coal is so cheap to import why is it so expensive to buy? Get your facts right Scargill wasnt fighting for more money he was fighting to keep miners jobs securing britains future! With these personal stories we are hoping to present a realistic drama piece on the 1984/85 strike. How it effected the men and families at the time.
