Superior because women are superior in every way and men are evil and should all die. I am a proud feminist but am not a woman. I love women in every way, I don't know why but they are amazing.
I think of Ani DiFranco saying' "I think all decent people should call themselves feminists, out of respect..." I can't remember it exactly, but the point is that we who benefit from the fruits of the labor of feminists who went before us owe them more than we know...
The first thing, for some reason, wasn't a word, but the feminist protest scene from PCU. I don't know that I really like the word feminist. Too many bad connotations and it's almost like if you are one, you need to explain yourself immediately before the person trys to get away immediately. Feminist tends to = "angry violent woman" for most.
It has a negative connotation for me, sadly. I'm not sure why, but I think it has something to do with taking an extremist position, whether is positive or negative, is still an extreme position.
I would have like it more if my mind would have come to a more descriptive meaning of how I subconsciously view feminism; but the word that I immediately thought of was: woman.
Maybe this is an indictaion that I believe that more women are feminists, as opposed to feminisms relation to women's empowerement.Oh, I wish freud were here!
"Woman" seems to be quite a neutral response. I'm not Freud but I would suggest that it means you are quite open in your feelings towards it. I.e., you didn't narrow it to some derivative impression that might unfairly color it.
I have nothing against any of the feminists I've actually met, but I've gotten a really bad impression from the militant attention-whores that have represented what this word means to me through negative publicity.
That being said, "bitch" was the first thing that came to mind.
the only feminists i know that actually feel they need to say they are feminists are usually the women that want to change the word history because its derived from "his story" or that the word Manhole (as in sewers)should be changed to something more gender neutral. I have nothing wrong with a woman standing up for equal rights, but come on...the word "history"? Thats taking it a bit far. Unfortunatly those are the people i think of when i hear the word feminist.
A one word response to a system of thought that is at least 40 years old (well over a hundred if you include the suffragette movement), has branched out to a staggering degree, and is nearly impossible to encapsulate in a book let alone a word?
"lesbians" - and that is NOT I repeat NOT a put down - my lesbian friends embrace the word - my straight female friends are hesitant to use it - also a disproportionate amount of the proactive initiatives for women in my area have been headed by wonderful, warm, courageous, free thinking lesbians
I mean that in more than one way. "Awesome" as in someone who I am more likely to like, "awesome" as in powerful, because the intelligent, the open minded, the moral...these are the powerful, the ones who strike me with awe. Feminists, by definition, are all of those.
Outspoken women who fight against the standard stereotype that above all else just want to be treated equal with others based on abilities as opposed to gender.
Gotta agree with you there "thequestionmarkofGod" thats the same image that pops into my mind. Not a word but an image. Nevertheless the group I belong to here in sacramento called AOF (google AOF of Sacramento) has lots of ties to feminist organisations. So my image association to your word does not dictate my actions.

Fist.
It's right there in the word: F emin IST
Plus I think of the sign of strength that is invoked when a person holds up a fist a la Black Power, Woman Power, etc.
Then, of course, there's Rosie The Riveter and her inspirational cartoon fist.

And that's because the instant connection I make is with the ultra-feminist man-hating lunatics.
The more liberal types of feminism (such as the Suffragette movement), I don't usually consider feminism. I consider it common sense.

Its not 'a' word, its a picture.
tough, macho, overpowering, dominating, brutish, unfeminine, angry, bitter, slogan shouting, sign wielding, possibly lesbian woman.
Yes, it has baggage for me, I confess.
And yes, I am wrong, but thats the first image that enters my head.
