One of the students at our school was implicated in a murder case; head instructor asked him for his belt, and that was that. For being forced to defend myself against bullies I nearly lost MY belt, and I was only orange. The instructor heard what happened from witnesses though and he let it go.
In the events of the movie "Ip Man," Gichin Funakoshi was still alive; had he been in China, he would have strongly disaproved of the Japanese soldier's behavior, and possibly even asked them for their belts which, in Karate, is a huge disgrace, especially for a black belt. At my own school the first thing the instructor told us, that if he heard of any of us misusing Karate, he would ask us for our belts.
maybe those stories in the movie "Ip Man" were true, and Japanese Karateka completely ignored Funakoshi's teachings, and corrupted the art.
For corrupting Karate, if that 10 Karateka scene really did happen, I'm glad Yip Man beat the shit out of them. Maybe after that those fuckers would have learned to listen to their teacher.
I am an MMA fighter, and the other day I fought this guy, yes my name (bullshitting here) is Moti Horenstein, and I fought Mark Coleman. Even though I got my ass kicked by Mark Coleman, Fedor Emanialenko promoting me, putting in a good word for me, it has spread the Horenstein style of MMA far and wide man, Coleman's style of MMA though? See he was a fighter, not a diplomat, that is why his style is not spread anywhere..
In east asian culture, the reputation of your school hangs on your skill; Shotokan could not have possibly have spread so far and wide on just Kano's "good word" and "promotion."
If after having publicly gotten MY ass kicked for example, does anyone here seriously think that being promoted by Fedor Emanialenko would help my martial arts career any? How the fuck, does "oh, Funakoshi lost but he was promoted" even make any sense!?
Funakoshi does not talk about ANY fighting in his books, neither wins nor losses. Also I don't think Hikiwake is Japanese; I have had a lot of Japanese friends in the past, and they all told me, that in Japan if as a martial artist you lose a major challenge match, it will destroy your style's reputation. People make excuses for Choki, saying that Funakoshi was a "diplomat" and all that crap, when, well the Japanese want to see results.
all those stories about Funakoshi "losing" are a load of crap; as that dumbass stardingo747 stated, Funakoshi had the strong eyes of a true master. Funakoshi's eyes, had calmness, focus, and intense concentration, while Choki's eyes were full of emotional turmoil, and absolutely no focus, what few pictures I've seen of him, there is no way a man like Choki, or any of his students could have beaten Funakoshi.
no one in modern martial arts has what the Japanese call "strong eyes." They certainly appear in anime a lot, but not in real life so much anymore. Even MMA fighters, the ones who try to look mean, for all their confidence they don't anywhere near that much mental strength.
that is his gaze; a master of martial arts, will acquire a gaze that betrays a focused mind of such intensity, it is intimidating, even if its only video footage. The mind is not just focused, but it is also devoid of any fear.
acerwk, why are you talking like that? Do not speak about things that you have not experiened yourself, and please, do not make fun of or be inpolite.. It's just not funny, and I don't see the point of saying things like that. If you want to offend people, go somewhere else, this video is for us who want to see Funakoshi shihan, it is for us who care about the martial art we are practicing and it is for us who can behave. The way you are talking only shows how disrespectful you are.. Fredrik
I agree, if theres one thing we learnd from Sensei Funakoshi it is that "Karate begins and ends with respect", which is a pricipal of many martial arts (which is something that acerwk, completely lacks). Gichin Funakoshi was a great master, and if u do not recognize that then there is absolutely no need to disrespect him, in that manner.
and thats is exact point, you wouldnt be able to even block him hahahahah. than? pfft english isnt my native tonge, sorry it was just a typing mistake
"lol"? looks like you spend more time posting crap on youtube and playing games online than prctising hahahahahah, now thats pathetic ahahahahah
wtf dude looks like the dick in your ass stops you from thinking. i'd like to watch you fight in kihon kumite against my theacher, a shotokan JKA 3rd than, and a humble admirer of gichin funakoshi's art.
maybe those Chinese stories are true; you Japanese truly only practice martial arts to hurt other people, not to improve yourselves. Funakoshi trained many men, who went on to become all Japan Karate champions, most notably Nishiyama and Kanazawa, both men defeated Choki stylists. If Choki stylists could not beat either Nishiyama or Kanazawa, then there is no way Choki himself, could beat Funakoshi.
despite the efficacy of Kata being proven, many Japanese Karateka focus on the fighting rather than self improvement; seriously martial artists of Japan that is fucking disgusting.
if that really did happen, I'm glad Bruce Lee's teacher kicked your asses and taught you a lesson in respect for other people.
by the sounds of it everyone here likes karate just not shotokan well surely you would have enough knowledge of karate to realise it is based on respect and ettiquette learn to use respect when talking about the founders of a martial art instead of bad mouthing one of the greatest practitioners in karate, some people need to learn that not everything has to have sides we all do kartae cant we just be happy with that?!
Too many people say that Shotokan is "gay" just because we don't do as much sparring and stuff like that. But if you read books about Funakoshi you will quickly learn that he deeply believed in the spirituality of karate, you'll see that everything to do with Shotokan has deep meanings.
Oh, and so what, even if Funakoshi did get beaten up, he was still an amazing man and should be respected.
Well in Japan we keep it all in archives. Not only the Butokukai but you can find it in Donn F. Draeger International Hoplology Society archives too.Everybody here knows the story but this is not important
In Japan we have the Bugei Ryuha Daijiten which is the official archive of all martial arts schools and there you can find what happen, how Funakoshi lost his fight and how Ohtsuka resque him using his Jujitsu backround
But I think Nakayama writes years after about the battle of Giko that his lost make him rethink about his art and change lot things about his training
Funakoshi and Motobu where rivals
Funakoshi was better diplomat and Motobu better fighter
I dont think it was very bad for his reputation because Funakoshi always state that his Karate, never call it Shotokan , was Do and not Jutsu and focus on development of the character
Sensei Ni Rei. I'm not shotokan practicioner, my respect and bow to the great teacher Funakoshi Sensei even I dont agree with some of his changes personally..
right on man, funakoshi developed shotokan, and it was spread through the world faster than naha te, shuri te, and tomari te, shorin ryu, shorei ryu and others.

Funakoshi never fought. All accounts of any physical confrontations on narrarated in his book "Karate-do: My Way of Life"
The confrontations he was exposed to he won, and he isnt proud of it.
Before you idiots produce more idiots, read his books, and you might not be as big of an idiot.
