I don't think James Woods blindsided Meryl with the John Cazale topic; he's a friend and knows this is still a touchy subject for her after 30 years. He probably discussed with her what he was planning on saying, and she gave him the ok--as long as Woods didn't mention John's name. Also, Woods may have felt that reminding everyone about the long-gone John would not only be painful to Meryl, but would upstage the love of her life, Don.

I can understand the thought that James Wood should not have mentioned John Cazale , but it was amazing what that one speech addressed.
John Cazale was friends with Pacino, DeNiro and Meryl plus he was in the Deer Hunter which was her 1st major film. It allowed someone else other then her to address this early relationship which was an Elephant in the room.
It also created a great way to shift into a moment of appreciation to talk about the man in her life Don without it being clumsy
I was not at the dinner , but have listened / watched the available clips and this was the only one I have seen that referenced her relationship with John Cazale.
I still think he did it in a brilliant way so that it did not detract from the event but in a very tasteful way spoke to that part of her life.

I agree, I believe, and I could feel deep within that John was Meryl's soulmate but yes, Don was her destiny. Two different things. She projects something holy when she was with John whereas with Don she exudes great peace securty, safety and all. its really sad that john died but as what a friend said don and meryl were destined for each other she said that dons marriage wont be turned into farce and john wont have that terribble death for nothing cause its all for a plan it was like john was meryls soul mate but don was her destiny

I agree, I believe, and I could feel deep within that John was Meryl's soulmate but yes, Don was her destiny. Two different things. She projects something holy when she was with John whereas with Don she exudes great peace securty, safety and all. Just an observation though.but sometime you can tell at physical features how people match and all.

why wouldnt he talk about it...???life is not a bed of roses regardless of your status and the likes. it happened and had to be dealt with same as any other person, famous or otherwise. she had to deal with whether she was in the limelight or not!

well to think that john died isnt a good thought but its like john himself found a way for meryl so it wont hurt getting over him i dont think that it was appropriate for woods to talk about this but john's been a part of meryl still his speech ended up having meryl and don share a kiss so sweet

Yes, I was wondering the same thing. Is it appropiate for him to mention him in such an important night? I thought it was a bit cruel (just a bit, because I thought all in all the speech was so adorable). But I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but it still seems to be a delicate subject for her, I mean, look at her expression! It breaks my heart...

That's what I meant, too. When he started to talk about this chapter, she seemed to be shocked as well as upset - although she kept her countenance.
The reason for him to talk about this, must have been the pressure to tell also a story nobody has heard yet, like all the other spokepersons on this event. Even if that's misplaced.

It was definitely inappropiate for James to mention J.C. Especially with this jovial style. I like Woods very much (he is a hard person to deal with though) but this is not the time and place to talk about this.

@Frye666 Well... He was part of her life, and he did focus on the transition to her life afterwards. He didn't even mention his name, so its not like he delved into that relationship or anything.
