  • Great speech.

  • John Cazale 1935 – 1978

  • @jmcgvrn Did you see ''I knew it was you''? Beautiful documentary paying tribute to John.

  • @Sharpthunder95 : yeah .. dat was it ...

  • super like!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ooh piece of candy!

  • James Woods is so awesome in Once Upon a Time in America

  • I love you, Meryl. Such an extraordinary lady!

  • @Sharpthunder95 That was their only film together, and John's last (he died before it was released). They'd met about two years prior to that while starring together in Shakespeare's "Measure For Measure" in New York.

  • someone to care for, to be there for, I have james woods

  • Did he actually do the voice for family guy?

  • @1256robert yes

  • MIKE TORENO!!

  • Bonjour,

Je ne sais pas comment James Woods est perçu chez nos amis américains, mais il représente lui AUSSI un Monstre Sacré à mes yeux, beaucoup trop largement sous estimé !

  • Lovely, Jimmy.

  • So THIS was the guy who played hades in kingdom hearts!

  • @SeasongProductions or in the disney movies

  • @SeasongProductions, indeed. He also played the voice of Hades in Disney's Hercules movie. It's kind of interesting to listen to him here as a sweet-sounding gentleman, and then to hear him in Hercules as a fast-talking villain with a short fuse.

  • It would have been nice to see meryl streep fall in love with a bricklayer of a carpenter or some one more working class but i guess thats unexceptable in hollywood...

  • Only Jimmy Woods could joke about boning someone on a series called "Holocaust".

  • happy b day MERYL STREEP.

  • Don and Meryl are the cutest. So cute.

  • i don't think any1 EVER truly recovers from the loss of a lover. they had so much in common, their careers were flying high back when john passed away and having gone so soon and so painfully must make the whole episode imposible to leave behind :'(

  • god, at 0:59 she seems truly moved and her eyes seem to be filled with tears :'(

  • Press 8. . .awwww, she were blushiing :D

  • awwww, she were blushiing :D

  • lawl HADES !

  • Oh James Woods your greatest role will always be battling Peter Griffin

  • oh piece of candy!

  • james woods is the most charismatic good hearted genius ever

  • James Wood is still awesome

  • Typically tasteless of the talented but sometimes tone-deaf James Woods.

  • omfg he looks so old with his white hair!

  • and you were blusssshhhiiiiinng! omg james woods is awesome

  • Ooo a piece of candy!

  • she was close to crying when he talked about john cazale..

but i think, everything happens for a reason, and if john didn't die, meryl wouldn't have her husband don and her beautiful kids!

  • oh my God!!!! poor the meryl ´s husband!!!!! he should felt so idiot hahaha...

  • aaaawwww...just....aaaawwww...

  • Woods is amazing. Totaly underrated actor.

  • Woods was so great in Casino.. "Lester Diamond" ... . the greasiest bastard alive.

  • God, that is so sad. But damn, the ending is cute!

  • James Woods is a great actor

  • ohgod!

Her eyes! You can see every emotion in her eyes!

    Gosh that sadness...

but then I think this is the cutest cutest cutest thing I've ever heard!!! Seriously that love!

    <3

  • John Cazale although a great actor and all the rest of it was one weird looking dude.

  • @Chris2O09 it is a sad world indeed, when ppl are judged on base of their looks.

  • @thisnamealsotaken I didn't judge him on his looks.. i said he's a weird looking dude. Thats an observation.

  • @Chris2O09 an observation? loll u should go into politics. hey i saw this black dude and i said; thats a nigger. but its ok cus its not judgment but an observation.

  • @Chris2O09 Because "weird" is an objective term, right?

  • Are you on crack? I observed him.. thought he looked weird.. HE DOES LOOK WEIRD. Whats wrong with that?

  • @Chris2O09 You observed him and projected your own interpretation of "weird" onto him. "Weird" is a subjective term, you dumb douchebag.

  • @egretdingo No.. not my interpretation of weird. He just looks fucking weird. No need for the douchebag comment either.. jeez.

  • @Chris2O09 Yeah. No need for namecalling after having called me a crack-user. Stay classy. You think there's a universal interpretation of "weird"? Smarten the hell up.

  • @egretdingo Are you telling me John Cazale looks normal?

  • @Chris2O09 It doesn't matter what I think. You're the one who thinks his idea of "weird" is some sort of absolute concept. You THINKING he looks weird doesn't mean that he DOES look weird. Nobody looks weird without other people observing and not everyone will think he looks weird. How is this not getting through to you?

  • @egretdingo He looks weird. The end.

  • @Chris2O09 You're a massive dimwit. Goodbye.

  • @egretdingo No lets carry on the list... John Cazale looks weird!!!

  • @Chris2O09 "LOLOLOL ignorance and stupidity are fun!". I hope you get your thumbs up. You're still missing the point.

  • @Chris2O09 what an insecure loser

  • This is an incredible story about how people first met.

  • "And you were bluchingggg!"

  • I heard James Woods has a large penis

  • Who died?

I think I saw the actress from NCIS

  • @pomegranateish John Cazale, who played Fredo Corleone on The Godfather.

  • pitch perfect story telling.

  • aww ;)

  • Meryl & hubby seem to understand James Woods better than some of the viewers here.

  • James Woods voice=Grand theft auto san andreas Mike Toreno voice xDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

  • my favorite speech on AFI... :)

  • darn! good thing he made it a happy ending.

  • Hey, you could write some text of the speech, please?

  • Honestly, I think James Woods was just really fine in the way he spoke about John Cazale's death. I think he just had to talka bout that to mention Don after. Meryl looks really sad because it's been a really hard moment in her life, but she definitely doesn't blame him for doing that , he's one of her best friends.. one of the greatest speeches of Meryl's AFI :)

  • omg so thats the actor in the cartoon Hercules (plays Hades)

  • @Blazingwheel he is awesome right?

  • she is awesome

  • Love when it touches you, never leaves your heart. The memories, no matter how old, feel like yesterday. You look at pictures and feel like you could touch them again. The ones we love never leave us. The pain of seperation is great. Life is truely a gift. We must embrace the pain along with the good. And see that no matter what life brings to us, God will see you through. In the end, it is love that will bring us together again. God's promise. Anthony, I love you always.

  • I agree with james that Meryl and Don's love is true love, for me jonh Cazale was her first great love, but Don Gummer is the love of her life, 31 years of marriage are proof of that great love ... And as she seesDon at the final , with that look of love and kisses him whit much love and tenderness OMG... what greatest love, Meryl and Don .....i{m sure that at this time jonh cazal is only a sweet memory!!!

  • Lovely speech.

  • Jonh Cazale fue amor FRIST de Meryl, que lo amaba, pero ahora UNO NO, DON GUMMER Es su único amor DE SU VIDA ..............!!

  • Woods could have made a nice speech about the love between Meryl and Don w/out mentioning John's untimely passing. I suppose he was around when Meryl met Don and even before when Cazele passed.. Still, he could have started the story with them working on "Holocaust" and Meryl meeting her husband to be. She just looks so sad when he brings it up. She doesn't discuss John (I've never heard her), and James Woods should have respected that and not brought it up...

  • I don't think James Woods blindsided Meryl with the John Cazale topic; he's a friend and knows this is still a touchy subject for her after 30 years. He probably discussed with her what he was planning on saying, and she gave him the ok--as long as Woods didn't mention John's name. Also, Woods may have felt that reminding everyone about the long-gone John would not only be painful to Meryl, but would upstage the love of her life, Don.

  • I can see in her eyes all the pain and the love. I know that she miss John, but she loves Don.

  • her face at 0.58 wow heartbreaking </3

  • Meryls face is so sad when he talks about Cazale. It wasn't right that he did that. She almost cried. I think she was upset about it, but then after all he began to talk about her relationship with Don and that's so cute :) That kiss on the end was soo cute :)

  • Well, I don't want to sound mean, but.. It was a long time ago. And she's had a great, loving family since. Not saying what she should be behaving like, but mentioning her time with him shouldn't be a chore. Despite his death, they had a good time together. And thats what should matter.

  • James Woods is an very awesome actor

  • OMG they are so cute together but why he hab to mention john thats not fair just see how she's looking there but I'm glad that he only talked about him for few seconds and then talked about her and don so cute the kiss at the end

  • Awesome .. i hv such respect for this lady..!! The IDEAL woman.. !!

n gosh she was going all red when James Woods referred to the 'Blush' thingy.. soo cute..

Indeed one of the Gr8est luv affair of Hollywood..

  • i really love this video. Meryl and Don are so cute :) and yeah this is the best love affair...ever!

  • La historia de Meryl es muy fuerte, James fue su compañero en la miniserie Holocausto. Por esos años Meryl estaba con John que estaba muy enfermo. Luego de su muerte la Streep encontró consuelo y amor en Don!!!

  • At 1.38 - did James Woods said and you were blushing - to Meryl, and then - and HE was blushing (according to Don)??

  • @MayaOfficial "She" was blushing..if you listen closely just after he said "You" he said "she." :)

  • what was Meryl at 1:33 ????????

  • @Bravosupergirl at 1.33 Meryl was blushing

  • if there ever was a thing such as fate, i think meryl streep's story may be just the one, losing a loved one and finding her soulmate right after the tragedy. such a great story!

  • Don Gummer has the kindest eyes!

  • I can understand the thought that James Wood should not have mentioned John Cazale , but it was amazing what that one speech addressed.

John Cazale was friends with Pacino, DeNiro and Meryl plus he was in the Deer Hunter which was her 1st major film. It allowed someone else other then her to address this early relationship which was an Elephant in the room.

It also created a great way to shift into a moment of appreciation to talk about the man in her life Don without it being clumsy

  • Agreed. I can understand (as we all do, I believe) her reluctance to talk about him because of his death, but he still existed in her life, you know.

Anyway, its great that she was awarded this. She deserves it fully. Congrats!

  • @Beachdudeca Did no one else mention him?

  • @IAM

I was not at the dinner , but have listened / watched the available clips and this was the only one I have seen that referenced her relationship with John Cazale.

I still think he did it in a brilliant way so that it did not detract from the event but in a very tasteful way spoke to that part of her life.

  • I thought it was a nice speech. It was part of her life. I think it

was a story to show hope and that a person can love again and become happy again. I don't think he meant it to hurt and I don't think she took it as such in the end

  • And i believe you said the truth! No need to explain why..., just my thoughts!

  • wow, that was an amazing speech...he made me cry

  • @thegreenblazer Maybe he didn't want to rip up the wound! You can see she has tears in her eyes!

  • Ahh... I understand. But I think he left Cazale's name out of the speech, for Meryl's sake. :) For the sake of her private life and the memories :)

  • @msMerylStreepLove who was Cazale?

  • @DutchPK he played Fredo Corleone in godfather 1 and 2

  • Aww. This is so cute. I love Meryl soo much!!

Haha when he said "and you were blushing" soo funni.

  • for the first moment, she was thinking "how dare he" ... and it could have been incredibly trite and embarrassing, but he managed to pull it off. he's still creepy.

  • meryl is so sad there!

i cried with her too. :'(

  • James Woods is totaly better than William H. Macy is.

  • I would say a close call!

  • she never got over him, felt sorry for her. don is ace making meryl happy again.

  • I felt her pain. Her eyes went dead there for a while. The love never dies even when they do. I know. . .

  • Who was this?

  • It was John Cazale, the remarkable actor who played Fredo in The Godfather, etc.

  • he is james woods... f uve seen the series Holocaust of meryl ull see him there playing her husband

  • Awe that was really sweet!

At 0:58 when they show Meryl's face, I cried.

I'm so glad Meryl and Don met!

    I love you, Meryl!!

  • "and your where blushing"

    hehehe

  • 1:18 omagash,i see that it really hurt-ed for her,but now she have really the greatest love in the century :)

  • omg i cryed!!! arrhh!!! that was the cutest thing when they kissed!!!! :D

    love you meryl streep/gummer!!!!

  • yip. the GREAT love affair of the 20th century- amen 2 dat!!!!! <333

  • I think it's a great way to speak about the two men of her and to pay tribute to her story with john and the one with don so sweet !!!!

And you were blushinngggg !!! so cute like that one ;)

  • Ahh i amost cry, but at the end is so cute when they kiss

  • i think those two men sitting next to Grace are her brothers. i can`t say who is Harry though.

  • Comment removed

  • I believe Harry's the guy wearing the glasses. The young man sitting next to Meryl, on her right, is her son. And a handsome lad at that

  • ....Oh my ...!!! I love this speech ...!!! I think that it isn't bad , o mention Jonh'S death , because it had been part of Meryl's life , and still is ...!!!!

But she fell in love again ... and .... SHE IS HAPPY !!! ... The rest is up to her xD ...^^ We are not allowed to judge it ...!!! I love his speech .... "And you were blushing..." hahaaha

  • its really sad that john died but as what a friend said don and meryl were destined for each other she said that dons marriage wont be turned into farce and john wont have that terribble death for nothing cause its all for a plan it was like john was meryls soul mate but don was her destiny

  • Aww She Never got over Johns death did she?

    now im crying!

  • John Cazale will always be missed...1935-1978

  • they are sooo cute! i love her! it is sad that John died but Meryl and Don are a wonderful couple! thanks!

  • I'm not happy that john die, but if he was here.. henry, mamie, gracie and louisa never been here. But is sad that he die, but happy that she meet Don.

  • yea it gave a rare moment to see such sadness on meryls face it hurt to see it

  • awee whyy did he have to talk about john cazale??? she looks like she is about to burstinto tears! awee love u meryl <3

  • why wouldnt he talk about it...???life is not a bed of roses regardless of your status and the likes. it happened and had to be dealt with same as any other person, famous or otherwise. she had to deal with whether she was in the limelight or not!

  • sure - but no one else has to deal with it in front of so many people.

  • well to think that john died isnt a good thought but its like john himself found a way for meryl so it wont hurt getting over him i dont think that it was appropriate for woods to talk about this but john's been a part of meryl still his speech ended up having meryl and don share a kiss so sweet

  • Why why whyyy did he have to mention the death of John..she looked so sad bless her :'(

  • I thought that he shouldn't have mentioned John, but it goes on to something happy, and it was an important part of her life. But that sad face just makes me want to burst into tears!

  • wow i dont think he should have mentioned J.C.. she looks so sad on :57 aw i just want to give her a big hug.

  • is that harry streep the 3rd at 1:23?

  • Yeah, i think that! ^^

  • So sweet!

  • Meryl and Don are great together! I still don't think it's was the right time for him to mention that tragedy that happend in her life!

  • what tragedy?? what happened? =O

  • Well she was engaged to John Cazale the person he was talking about who died from cancer

  • Sooooooo incredibly cute.

  • Greatest Lovestory EVER!!!!.....

look at meryl's face when James are talking about john cazale....she almost cry....i feel sad for meryl but don gave her the love and happiness that she deserves!!5*

  • very.very nice lovestory...just meryl's love...

    she's the best in all

  • It's such a nice lovestory.

But I wonder, if it's alright for her, that he talked about Cazale.

  • Yes, I was wondering the same thing. Is it appropiate for him to mention him in such an important night? I thought it was a bit cruel (just a bit, because I thought all in all the speech was so adorable). But I don't know, maybe I'm wrong, but it still seems to be a delicate subject for her, I mean, look at her expression! It breaks my heart...

  • That's what I meant, too. When he started to talk about this chapter, she seemed to be shocked as well as upset - although she kept her countenance.

The reason for him to talk about this, must have been the pressure to tell also a story nobody has heard yet, like all the other spokepersons on this event. Even if that's misplaced.

  • It was definitely inappropiate for James to mention J.C. Especially with this jovial style. I like Woods very much (he is a hard person to deal with though) but this is not the time and place to talk about this.

  • Comment removed

  • @Frye666 Well... He was part of her life, and he did focus on the transition to her life afterwards. He didn't even mention his name, so its not like he delved into that relationship or anything.
