  • You're freakin awsome !!! ... i'm gonna learn a lot from you !!!

  • CHAMPIX rule 4 months ago i did the exact same as you did, give up are you still quit or back on them?

  • Do you sing in the band too?

  • it's amazing how you can get all those high notes. Scary shit

  • Excellent stuff -- I really liked the sample passages where you show us what you can actually *do* with the notes once you've learnt them. This is the cleanest example of an overdraw that I've come across on YouTube.

  • Incidentally, I'm playing a Lee Oskar with no modifications (because I'm terrified I'll break it) and, although it's slow going, I've managed to get all the overblows and overdraws out apart from holes 1 and 10. Maybe you don't *have* to adjust them (but it's probably easier if you do)?

  • Fabulous instructions, I'II look for Rocket #9. I guess it won't be on the shelves in Australia...The smoking thing, yeah took me five goes and twelve years to stop. I reckon you could hold off for ten minutes though, just for the sake of young guys watching and looking for a role model.

    Keep cookin', Max

  • Wow, that McDonald's straw thing worked for me! I've been trying to figure out overdraws for a year now, and I've had no luck at all. Somehow I missed this video before but I just ran across it today. Now I can get the 7 and 9 overdraw. Of course it still sounds a lot like a Mallard duck being crushed by a falling piano, but that's what my overblows sounded like last year when I first learned them. Now they're smooth. Thanks again for all your great vids, Jason.

  • @cosmicinsane Ha! Mallard and piano. Made me laugh. I recently used a falling piano simile to describe the difference between chops-rich guitarists who do and don't have that essential 'feel' aspect to their playing: all the notes, just not all within seven seconds, thank you. At 46, I'm 'just starting', after messing with harp as a kid. I 'm trying to digest all I can on technique and let my ear take me from there. I'm a douchebag when it comes to doing things 'the right way'. JR ROCKS!

  • thanks jason! you are a genius!

    saludos desde argentina!

  • awsome man keep it up man. moving on up!

  • .The video is what I need, and you almost gat me with the smoking. Thanks for the videos Ricci

  • so is it safe to say that every thing on holes 7 - 10 are reversed...

  • 6:12. I laughed so hard. Something about the great Jason Ricci saying "holy crap I just learnt that" about playing harmonica is inherently funny

  • I love the HOLY CRAP i just learnt something.. You're amazing man! I want to learn to play harp... i should start immediately!! Thanks for the videos!

  • Jason thank you so much for this video! Recently I've become fascinated with the playing of Howard Levy and so I decided to learn to overdraw and thanks to this video I can now do it. I just have to practice and get them to the same point as my overblows where they will come out anytime. Thank you so much.

  • So Jason how are you bending the blows, pushing the tongue to the teeth, saying 'eee' like Gussow described, or dropping your throat.

  • yeah thats it...gonna have to learn the tongue block bend this year too. what u up to?

    J

  • i figured it was dropping your throat, so i was correct? i haven't done no tongue blocked blow bends, yet!!! What am I up to? Waiting for some harps, and I have an HG50 in the birthing process...

  • keep smoking! i wil.

  • Quit smoking !! Tar and nicotine on the reeds.

  • Jason,

Got to respect your honesty and no BS approach.

Tell people what they need, not what they want to hear.

Thanks for your contribution to the soul of blues.

  • Thanks man! That means a lot!

    J

  • Jason, love how you learn little stuff as you're teaching. The embochure you use on a blow-bend is the same as you use for an overdraw. The hard part is hitting those pesky thangs at speed.

Thanks again for your support of the harp community!!

    Mojo Red

  • use heavy strings

    play hard

    and floor it

    SRayV

  • thanx bro and that tab comment has changed my perspective of playing 4 the better

  • Cool video, good choice on Chantix! Will try to learn this stuff, but, first, I want to work more on Bending and Tongue Blocking. Maybe overblowing with a Tongue Block. Hope to hang soon!

  • I love the way the harp starts to sound kind of Arabic in these techniques.

  • Smoking? Type 'harmonica into Wikipedia.

Harps are used for therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)which is caused by smoking.

Cool eh? Imagine loads of old wheezers jamming in the hospital!

  • Thanks for another great learning video. I agree that hearing the sound creates a connection to move the throat and tongue muscles correctly to create the note. I think that seeing the Levy's show the movie of the tongue moving to create the bends sets up the unconscious to make the muscles make it happen. Thanks doc dc

  • just got Rocket #9 and now i have a new favorite CD. I think it's great that people are finally playing the harmonica like a horn instead of a cliched blues harp

PS. I don't like the smoking. I think u should quit

  • THANK YOU!!!!

  • very well said about tab jason. Nice lesson as well.
